Student Services Fair

I attended a Student Services Fair on the 13th of October in the Multipurpose Room. All the students were given a sheet in which 6 of the categorized must be hole punched in order to attain a signature for the Freshman Seminar requirements. The sole reason for attending this workshop was to fulfill them so I wasn’t all enthused about attending. Nothing really called to my attention, it was mostly general information that we have been told before. Although, I did learn we have a program where students read to younger children, this was made more interesting because the children are those of our very own Baruch Students. So it was nice to learn that the school makes an effort to take care of their own, or at least make things a little bit easier.

Stress Relief Workshop

It is now the end of the semester and it should come to no surprise that everywhere you go, a stressed college student will be found—and I must include myself as one of them. On December 3rd I was especially stressed for more reasons than just school. I had been scrolling through my emails that morning and one caught my eye: Stress Relief Workshop. It could not have come at a more perfect time. The very first thing I did upon entering the multipurpose room was sign up for a masseuse. I spent time with a few of my friends taking full advantage of the free food and fruit smoothies. We took the rest of the time to play our own version of Jenga and attempt to dance to some of the party songs they put. I’m not going to say the massage was all that great, but a massage is still a massage, and of course the free food helped.

Almost forgot. They were giving out stress release pamphlets, and on the cover was a large circle with writing:  Bang Head Here. That made me smile.

Club Fair

Prior to attending Baruch College, I had already looked up what clubs and societies the school has to offer. I already knew what to expect and what I wanted to look for at the Club Fair held at the beginning of the semester in the gymnasium. I was mostly interested in looking at the dance organization, particularly Latin Ballroom. This is due to the fact that I had previously been involved in Spanish Club at my high school which included dance performances. Not wanting to feel deprived of dance I signed up to the Latin Ballroom Group as well as Ballroom Dance Organization. I also took interest in some other clubs and signed up to receive more information. This included the Ecuadorian Club-although not Ecuadorian and the Psi Chi Honor Society-as I am interested in majoring in Psychology. Near the end the Dance Organization had put on a performance with a Michael Jackson theme. Here, I found two old friends that were a year my senior from my high school; one attends here and the other is here so much you would think he does too. Once the DJ changed the music and put some merengue beats, the club fair turned into a party. And of course, I just had to dance. 😀

Blood Drive

I have never been one to pass up on the opportunity to help others when nothing much is required of you. My mother has always protested my donating of blood because she worries that too much blood is being drawn. In high school I would have to argue with her to sign the permission slip since I was underage and not allowed to make the decision on my own. After I turned 18, I would always sign up to the recurring blood drives held at the school without a second thought. It was never a problem until I was short 0.01 of the iron count required; this did not mean that I was anemic but it was a safety precaution so that I would have enough iron to spare. This was my first failed attempt, the next happened here at Baruch. I signed up for the first blood drive of the semester being held on the 6th of October. My natural instincts told me to sign up at the sight of students promoting the Blood Drive on the 2nd floor of Vertical Campus. I arrive at my appointment time, fill out the appropriate forms, and wait on line. The woman goes over the form I filled out, everything was fine except I was unable to answer how the tools used to perform a piercing of mine had been sterilized–as it had occurred so long ago. As a result, I am deferred from donating any blood until April, which is really disappointing.

arts at Baruch: Retrospective exhibition

I guess we are all going to say the samething about the Mercedes Matter retrospective exhibition, I must admit at the beginning I was not looking forward to it, I thought it was going to boring, but it was actually the complete opposite. I think it might have something to do with the fact that I take art history now, but I enjoyed the exhibit and the fact that it showed a range of her body of work. It was interesting to see that she started at such a young age and her exhibits ends when she is in her old age. Her works go from defined to very abstract, where you have to kind of struggle to depict the different images that construct the painting as a whole.  Its like an illusion to your eyes, and because her works range through her life you can kind of understand each milestone in her life, such as when her husband passed away and he paintings became even more abstract and somewhat chaotic with dark lines and rough strokes. Some works were created with just charcoal to canvas. Overall I feel the exhibit is worth seeing, if it were not for freshman seminar I probably would not have went to see it, but I guess that is the whole point to force us to do something we dont want to do, but in the end appreciate it, because I just broadened my knowledge a little bit more, plus it makes me realize that not all art is not boring, the modern and avant garde stuff is defintely more interesting, because there are no rules, just expression.

Mercedes Matter: Art gallery tour

To fulfill the Arts at Baruch requirement I attended the art gallery tour of Mercedes Matter. It was located on 22nd street at the Mishkin Gallery. I expected it to be very crowded but not to the extent that I  experienced. The wait alone was an hour but it was my last workshop so why not? From looking at the tour it was seen that the 10 artworks were in chronological order and they represented her life. From discovering that she wanted to paint at age 6 to moving to Italy at age 12 we see that the artworks told a story. Mercedes gained her education and was mainly influenced by the great Italian artist Bellini. The final artwork, which showed the skulls, was the most significant in the gallery. The medium was charcoal on canvas and was made during the passing of her husband. The reasons for all the dark color and mucky texture was so she can represent the grief that she had been going through since his death. I dont really recommend this tour because personally I did not enjoy but maybe other would.

Food Flyer

To fulfill the requirement of Global/Community Awareness workshop, Aaron Chen and myself created flyer’s and posted them all over the vertical campus on October 29th.  We donated some food as well. We gave our peer mentor, Winnie, pasta to donate for the poor and unfortunate. Doing this made me realize how fortunate I really am. I am getting a great education, I have food on the table, and a loving family. I think we can do more in the school to give back and I am sure that I will be apart of a similar donation just like the one me and Aaron supported with our flyer’s.

Pursuing your passion: choosing your major

The title of the workshop I attended is ” Pursuing your passion: choosing your major” and it fulfills the career exploration requirement. It was on november 3rd, at 12:30, in the vertical campus, 5-213.  This workshop was an aid on making a decision on what to pursue and how to do it. It tried to make students understand how their interests effect them in making a decision for their career. I chose to go to this workshop because I was not really sure what to study as I go into my sophmore and junior year. I had no idea what I wanted to become. From listening, participating in the workshop, and understanding what the advisers had to say, you could say that I have a stronger grasp on what I want to be when I graduate. I definitely recommend this to other students who have trouble on making decisions on classes and on careers.
