Freshman Reception

To fulfill this requirement I,along with others, went to the Freshman reception. It was on September 17th.The room was flooded with people and there was no type of organization. I didn’t really get much help on how to choose my major or minor. I basically had to wait until we had a meeting when an adviser came and talked to us about the tiers and requirements during freshman seminar. My expectations were definitely not met with what i experienced at the workshop. I’m assuming since it was the first official workshop for students, it was very crowded and unorganized. I shouldn’t reccommend this to students but i will because i think that the workshop will be more organized and more fufilling. I cant take much from this experience but I am sure if it was not as crowded it would of been very helpful.

Building and managing relationships

The workshop i attended was “Building and managing relationships” and it was to fulfill my personal enrichment requirement. It was on November 8th, it started at 12:30, and was located in room 1107 in the vertical campus. The workshop was basically a lecture on how to manage your relationships while you were in school. Either friendships, intimate relationships, and family relationships. I selected this workshop because in the beginning of the school year I was having difficulty managing my time with my schoolwork,  Free time, and work. It made me realize how crucial this subject is and how it can effect your grades significantly. The workshop definitely met my expectations. It basically fulfilled its title and even more. I like how we took breaks and performed a couple of exercises with people around us and actually be involved during the discussion. I learned that school does not only revolve around grade but around the house and the outside. Having free time for your self is very  crucial and important in college. I would recommend this to any student who is having difficulty with managing time with friends and loved ones.

Student Fair

To fulfill the student life requirement I attended the “Student Fair”. It was on October 13th, at 12:30, and it was located in the vertical campus, 1230-2. It was a way to show all the students how many resources they had from going to this school. There were departments for every kind of question and personally I thought it was kind of overwhelming. Everywhere I went teachers and advisers were saying “come here”, “learn bout this”, “do you have anymore questions?”. The list of questions that I had about college was slowly crumbling in my head. I chose this workshop because I had many questions and I’m proud of myself for going. This workshop overshot my expectations and really helped me out. I felt like I could take took control of my education once i left the room. I recommend this to anyone who has any doubts and questions concerning school and even life. There were a lot of helpful people in the room and I definitely didn’t take it for granted.

Arts At Baruch

To fufill this requirement, I personally love going to galleries, so it was fun to see the Sidney Gallery at Baruch. They had a photography exhibit called Nature of Photography. Though it was quite a wait, it was well worth it. We got a tourguide to show us each painting and explain its symbolism and how when looking at photography, there is a certain way to view and understand what its artist is trying to represent. This was a much calmer workshop and i actually got a good grasp on the technical ways to criticize and comment on photography.

Academic Enrichment

I went to the Freshman Reception to fufill my academic enrichment requirement. I found it to be really helpful actually. We discussed all the requirements needed to accomplish in freshman year. They discussed making timelines to plan everything ahead of time and to balance ourselves wisely. The transistion between high school and college and though it may be stressful, it is something easily dealt with. I couldnt really hear much because there were actually 200 kids all crammed in trying to get in, so I decided to leave when i felt i had learned enough, and i actually felt this workshop would have been even more useful, if it had been well-organized.

Community Global awareness

For this workshop, I actually participated in the Blood Drive, which was especially scary for me because i am terrified of needles. I figured it was for a good cause though so I decided to take part for the first time. I had heard some crazy horror stories before about donating blood, but it ran really smoothly for me which was good. After filling out my questionaire, the nurse took about a pint of blood, which also terrified me. But i attempted to keep it together, after it was over, i felt alot better and felt really fourtunate to be able to help those who need blood.

Student Life

I attended the Student Services Fair as a workshop for Studen Life. At first I wasnt quite sure what I was in for when I first signed up. Then when I went, I realized what I should have expected was chaos. Everyone was crammed together, I barely had time to get a signature, let alone any real knowledge about information. The volunteers seemed overwhemled and unsure of themselves and people were seriously just pushing and showing their way through just to say they went. I’d have to say this was a rather unsuccessful workshop and should really be organized better next time.

Career Exploration

The workshop I attended was called Internships and Goal settings. It was extremly helpful especially when in a time of economic turmoil, internships are a great way to get work experience and makes it easier to get employed. I personally am very interested in getting an internship, so learning about the Starr program was extremely helpful and useful. Not only did they give out information about internships, but also about making resumes presentable and intriguing to potential employers.

Personal Enrichment

The workshop that fufilled this requirement was called Managing Relationships in College. When i first heard of this, i honestly thought it was a strange concept, I mean, we have been handeling “relationships” since before college, so i figured there was nothing much to learn. I was actually pleasently surprised. The workshop gave me a new perspective on how to handle any sort of relationship in college. They explained romantic relationships, business relationships, friendships etc. They discussed the psychology behind why we handle certain situations the way we do which i thought was the most intriguing part of the workshop. They explained that though it might be hard for us to open up at first since we are in a new setting, we should try as best we can to open up and meet new people as much as possible, even if its in the halls or most likely in our class.

Mediating Conflict

Mediating Conflict
Personal Enrichment Workshop
November 12, 2009/ 12:30pm

The purpose of this workshop was for students at Baruch to learn how the they could solve the problems that they may have. I selected this particular workshop because I thought it would be helpful to learn about the many techniques that I could use in order to solve a problem that I might have. This workshop did not really take me out of my comfort zone because in freshman seminar we discuss how to mediate conflicts as well. Furthermore, this workshop meet my expectations, because many of the problems that we were discussing were the same problems that many freshmen face, so it was great to see the solutions that were being given. I would recommend this workshop to any student because it was helpful, interesting, and the students were really interacting with each other. Overall this was a good workshop.
