Sonia Sotomayor Panel Discussion 9/22/09 12:45 PM – 1:40 PM (Global Community Awareness)
This workshop briefly described Sonia Sotomayor’s “pioneer” road to her success as the first Latino Supreme Court Judge. Three professors decribe an issue regarding to “African Americans and Latinos.” Each talked about different aspects of both Sonia Sotomayor’s life and society’s view on African Americans and Latinos. The most important part of the speech to me was, “women can succeed as long as she strives to do so.” To me, women are still some what excluded in many parts of society, whether it is the representatives in the House or Senate, or simply in the work force.
Another issue the professor talked upon was, Latinos today are some what to be in the “shoes” of African Americans 50 years ago. I thought about this, and I asked myself, “In another 50 years, who will be in Latinos ‘shoes’ ?” and the answer is, we dont know, no one knows.
This workshop definitely helped me view society in a different view. And it is also a shame for those who missed this workshop.
