I attended this Career Exploration workshop called Resume writing on November 4th, 2009. i was told that i must dress in business attire in order to get in the workshop.unfortunately, when i arrived in the workshop with fellow classmates, we were the only ones dressed in business attire. did we receive false information or something? because it was quite embarrassing and we had to buy clothes that we didn’t even needed.
the whole workshop took about an hour. the speaker asked questions, we answered. then the speaker gave us information about different types of Resumes, what’s best to put on, and how to write them with powerful action verbs. i have learned that we should put GPA(Overall/Major) on the resume if we have 3.0 +. put conversational or fluent in another language if we speak another language other than English. Computer skill is very important also, since most jobs are associated with computers, proficiency in Microsoft Office is very useful when we try to apply jobs.
It is important to put job experiences on the resume, which is mainly focused on the Chronological resume model. if a person never had a job, he should use Functional resume model, which is mainly concentrated on his skill sets rather than job experience .
this workshop is quite helpful if we are trying to get a formal job in a company, but isn’t it too early to do this in freshman year. i strongly recommend this workshop for those who wants to apply jobs with a nice a resume that will catch eyes when the recruitor scans through the resume list.
