Blood Drive

I went to the blood drive on December 2nd. It was located within Vertical Campus 1st floor, but in an isolated room where people barely walk by. When I visited there with my friends, there were just about 2~3 people donating their blood. There was no waiting line. Room was huge, filled with beds and tables on which foods were stacked up. Soon a lady approached and asked us if we came to donate our blood. Unfortunately, one of my friend failed to make limit weight for donation which is 110 lbs. I also could not donate my blood due to prescribed drug that I previously used, which might cause symptoms like depression, burst of anger and many others to a person who receives my blood. The fact that only a small number of people donated their blood made me feel sad since numerous hospitals throughout the world always need more blood supplies daily. I also disliked the blood drive poster which did not indicate the location where it was held. I hope next blood drive will be advertised throughout the whole campus and hopefully fulfill blood supply demands.

Blood Drive

On December 2nd, 2009, I visited the holiday blood drive. The reason behind the visit included fulfilling the mandatory visits to workshop for freshman seminar class, but I also wanted to know if I was eligible to donate blood. I was aware of the fact that many people are in desperate need of blood, and the limit of blood supply was limited. When I visited the blood drive with my friends, the room was very empty and isolated, even though they had prepared very thoroughly for it. They provided a lot of refreshments and beds; however, I felt that the event was not promoted well enough since no one really knew anything about it. The lady at the blood drive was very kind and explained the criteria for donating blood. She said the minimum weight a person has to be in order to donate blood was 110 lbs, and the person must not have any forms of anemia. Also, they said even if a healthy person might feel dizzy after the donation if they don’t consume a lot of food prior that day. Since I didn’t meet few standards and I had a class to attend very soon, I didn’t get to donate my blood but I learned new information about it, and now am very well-informed. I want to encourage those who are interested in saving lives to help out by participating in the next event by donating blood.

Resume Writing

I went to the Resume Writing workshop on October 27. This workshop was open for students who have made appointments. As soon as I sat on seat, the workshop started with the brief description of importance of resume. I learned how to write a resume in highschool, but never learned in details. Instructors gave out the student guide sheets which show in great details about resume models, how to write a cover letter, resume tip, thank you letter, and many more. I was surprised to learned how important a cover letter and thank you letter can be. These letters help emphasize how well one is prepared for the job and therefore need to be written with great efforts. Not many years are left until I need to write my resume, therefore I found this workshop very helpful and interesting. It also made me think that I should visit Starr Career Development Center more often for further help in future. I would recommend this worshop to anyone who seek help in resume writing in addition to a cover letter and a thank you letter. This workshop was very organized and I hope to visit it again.

Basic Interviewing Techniques

On Thursday, November 12, I went to my career planning workshop called Basic Interviewing Techniques. This workshop helped me to know some basic information about interviewing. The person who presented the speech has many experiences as interviewer. She said she had seen many people have an interview. During the workshop, the presenter went over one by one of the basic interview techniques. This workshop is very helpful because I didn’t know anything about interview before I went to this workshop. I learned the first most important thing is personal pitch. Personal pitch is a 30 seconds o 2 minutes infomercial about you containing the most important and relevant information you want the interviewer to know including name, career objective, and qualification and accomplishments. This is very important because a good personal pitch can impress the interviewer. Also, you should know about the company that you want to work at. You should do research about the company to know the company’s history and age, services and products, and financial status etc. Besides, one important thing could affect the interview is dress. Dress formally to an interview is important because this shows that you really care about the interview. The presenter told us formal dress in detail about suit, ties shoes, and socks. She also told us to be enthusiastic and energetic during the whole interview. After the interview, be prepared to write the Thankyou letter. She said it was always necessary. The workshop ended a little bit earlier, but I already learned many things about interview. I was shocked that there are many steps we should follow in order to do well in the interview. This workshop helps me a lot in preparing later interviewing.

Last workshop- personal enrichment workshop

On Nov.19 I went to my last workshop, called suiside prevention, weekl the Truth about suiside.  I was afraid that there would be no seat left, so I went there 15 minutes before the workshop. Fortunately, there were enough seat for students. We watched a movie that talking about suicide among college students. The most problem was depression. Because that the college life is totally different from high school life, so it is hard to adapt to knew environment and it also need a lot of efforts. I could little bit understand their feelings, because I also as a  freshman of a college student,  feeling depression all the time: concern about my GPA, community activities, and my future. As my future comes more closer to me, the more depressed I am.  We all have similar situation, but everything is depending on the way we think and how we solve the conflicts among ourselves. I am feeling depressed, but I would never think about the suiside, insdead, I would find a way to release it and overcome it. And I wish every college student have same thought as me. After attending the last workshop, I felt both free and content. The workshops gave me lots of useful information which I can spread through my college journey. Even though 6 workshops were finished, I will still go to website calendar and check if there’s more useful workshops. I am very glad that freshman seminar gave me such many informations and acted as a safe and stable bridge so we can safely and tenderly get into Baruch College. It was reeeeaaaaalllllllllly wonderful days. Thank you to everyone.

Resume Writing

I went to a workshop called Resume Writing on October 27th of 2009. We were told to dress up for this workshop, but when I got there, no one wore business attires. Representatives from the STARR career center came over, and helped us understand and learn how to write resumes. Not only did they give us the format, they provided us with sample resumes and explained each categories, one by one. Also, they helped us find our strengths and weaknesses that we may also write in the resumes. They explained the fact that we have to use certain verbs and words to catch the attention, and to stand out from other applicants. I felt that this workshop was very organized and very useful for everyone. They gave us additional information as to writing the thank you letters and writing the introductory pages. The handouts they gave out were very useful, and it was something that would come into need very soon. I also learned for the first time that I can visit the STARR career center for various reasons, and overall enjoyed this workshop very much. It was very helpful and I would recommend it to anyone who needs help in any way or form.

The Truth About Suicide(film)_my Last Workshop :)

I watched a film called “The Truth about Suicide” on 10/19/09 during my personal enrichment workshop.  The week of the workshop was the suicide prevention week.  There are several facts I want to share with you all.  From the film, I learn that “there are more than four male suicides for every female suicide, but twice as many females as males attempt suicide.”  Normally, when people think of suicide, they would think of females being the one who commit suicide.  People tend to ignore male symptoms of committing suicide.  When have to watch our friends when they often talk about suicide directly or indirectly.  They are suicidal.  College is where the most suicides occur.  Therefore, we have to ask for help when we see suicidal symptoms.  This workshop is very helpful.  I learned that we have to ask help when our friends have the attempt to suicide. We have to ask counseling for help in order to save our friends.  Some other places are American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, American Association of Suicidology, and Jed Foundation, Active Minds on Campus, & Campus Blues.  The consequence of leaving our suicidal friends alone and helping them to keep their attempts as secrets is to lose them forever.  We should support our friends and care about them to help them get through such horrible time.  I like the fact that the workshop gave out papers for us to bring home.  They didn’t just show us the film.  They also talked about it and let us know the importance of looking for help when needed.

Resume Writing

I went to the Resume Writing Workshop on 11/17/09.  This workshop provides students important information about resume and using STAR Search.  They are specific rules to follow when we are writing a resume.  The presenter explained all the parts of the resume in details.  I was sharked when I heard that we do not put any work experience and education prior our high school graduation.  This information somehow made me upset.  Does it mean that all I did was pointless?  Maybe many of you will have the same question in your minds.  This is the main reason why we have to volunteer and join clubs to build up our resume.  The STAR Search is also a great tool for us to find internship and part time jobs.  Some information that I want to share is the part about “all reference request available.”  Many of us who have resume will put this sentence at the end of our resume.  It is important that you all know, when you put this in your resume, you have to have a reference page after your resume.  The reference should be no more than three people.  Make sure you contact them and let them know you are looking for a job and people may contact them for that.  I am satisfied with this workshop.  It refreshes my memory about resume and at the same time, provides me new information about resume writing.  I will start using the STAR Search website to revise my resume and perfect it.  I will do this when I have time.

#8 workshop-community-Global awareness

Perspective on Immigration Lecture, this is an amazing workshop i have never seen. It including all the things about the immigration. After six workshops, I think Baruch college really establish an excellent bridge between student because it gives us all the informaiton about the Baruch community via the workshop. And each of them were useful and meaningful, especially the relationship managemnet-Personal Enrichment Workshop. We had a party on Wednesday, playing music, chating each other, eating and drinking and we all had a great time. When we have a party like this, the relationshop between classmate would getting deeper and deeper. The semester is almost over and there are many final exam waiting for us, so we have to perpare well, not only the exam but the pressure.

last week I read an article, it told us not to waste our life, such as suicide. It shows us not to hurt or anything to let our mood down and we should give ourselves the best thing, since our life is not that long. For instance, a man can crash by a car and  died immediately when he is 20 years old, then he can’t do anything else in the future. after i heard this example, then i think that i really need to do something for myself, otherwise i would regret by that. lets try our best on  studying, learning, breathing. Lets enjoy every moment while you sleep, eat and walk.

20 Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

I went to the Community-Global awareness workshop called 20 Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall in November 5, 2009. Before I went to this workshop, my knowledge on the Berlin Wall is very limited, just knew that it was built to separate West Berlin from East Germany and East Berlin from my US history class in high school. This workshop made me learned a lot more then that. It is designed to celebrate the 20 Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 11/9/1989. The wall were separated the west and East Berlin for 28 years! Many history, political professors and adults came to this workshop. Many of them were experiencing the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago and shared their experiences with us.  After the workshop, I realized that the fall of the Berlin Wall had a significant influences to the people who lived both the west and East Berlin. From the videos and pictures, I saw that at that day, many west peoples were standing on the Berlin Wall, looking over to the east and walking to the other side of the Berlin for the first time! That image is very impressive to me! The art work on the wall and the Brandenburg Gate are impressive too. In fact, I learned that the decision of making the wall down in 1989 was from a speech mistake. And the Tiananmen Square Massacre also played a role in this event. In addition, I learned that there are many perspectives on the view of the fall of the Berlin wall, not every one was happy about his decision. One of the views is that some East Berlin people actually think that put up the wall protected themselves. The fall of the wall may increase the unemployment in the east. Many others think that it is a great thing, many young people’s life were changed because of the fall of the Berlin wall, that they can go to a artistic school, learning music, art, acting and others. The event provided them freedom and opportunity. I also learned the “consumer revolution” as a result of the fall of the Berlin wall. This is a very interesting and inspiration workshop that increased my knowledge about the world!
