The Nature of Landscape – Arts at Baruch

The art tour was interesting and the woman really knew all the details/processes of making some of the photos. I was suprised to see that Baruch had an art gallery.  My favorite was the Eustoma by Tom Baril. Surprisingly, there were a lot of people at the tour.  We just walked around and the speaker described the paintings and asked us what we thought about it.  I’ll probably stop by some other time just to look at the artwork again.

Building & Managing Relationships in College – Personal Enrichment Workshop

This workshop didn’t seem very long and the speaker had everyone get up and introduce ourselves to new people.  Out of all the workshops, we actually had to participate in this one, though some people just stood to the sides.  This was mainly about building and managing relationships with our partners, friends, peers, and coworkers as well as family.  I thought this workshop was decent–not too boring, somewhat interesting.  It was pretty organized and in the end, each row was called up to get their books signed.

Club Fair – Student Life

The club fair was crowded just like the Freshman Reception.  We had to swipe in for the event and I got a little subway map along with a highlighter.  I expected there to be more clubs to be there.  There were some sororities/fraternities along with honor societies and other smaller clubs.  I checked out the archery and bowling clubs.  So far, I haven’t gone to any of the meetings.  Most of the club representatives just wanted us to join and they offered a lot of food/drinks just for signing up.  Hopefully in the future, I’ll attend a club meeting.

Career Planning: Impression Management – Career Exploration

This event seemed really long but it was helpful.  I learned that first impressions are important, especially when you’re at a job interview.  The woman who was speaking was from the Starr Career Development Center and she just talked about ways to give a good impression.  These include body language, appearance, time management (late/early for an interview).  She also spoke about her own experiences and asked us questions about what we thought.

Freshman Reception – Academic Enrichment

The open house was ridiculous. There were too many people packed into one small section and it took forever to get inside. I wish they were more prepared to deal with the huge crowd and all I did was get my book signed and got the folder with all the information about the minors/requirements. I have to go see an academic advisor some time and I hope they’ll be helpful because in high school, some of the counselors were also teachers so they barely had time to answer our questions.

I went back to get the packet with all the freshman requirements.  There were sheets with all the Tiers and the classes and that was helpful when I was picking my classes for next semester.

Film Series: My Beautiful Laundrette (Community – Global awareness)

I chose to go to this even because it was one of the last global awareness ones besides the Holiday Blood Drive.  I can’t really say anything about the movie because it was never shown.  I waited and in the end, the person signed my book.  From what I looked up on the internet, the movie was released in 1986.  It is about immigrants who settled in London, England and therefore have to deal with discrimination due to their different cultures (IMDb).  This ties in with community/global awareness especially because Baruch students come from many different backgrounds.

Summary of my time so far?

I was having fun. In the beginning.

Now, not so much as I’ve realized that for me this is pretty much high school all over again. Except with more work. So many factors add to my not so fun experience so far, ranging from the mandatory “get used to the school” activities, to the amount of work assigned outside of classes, to the dull faces of everyone on the train in the morning. I mean, they went to college right? Manhattan jobs, they had ta have. So. Why aren’t they happy and smiling? I guess that’s what college got them.

In the beginning I was exited a bit because I thought that college was different, that it might be cool and fun… how wrong I was.. quickly I was hit with mandatory classes in areas of which I can’t even stay awake while playing games online in. This was depressing to me. How could something be so boring that even though I had my computer games I would still fall asleep in it?! and I was okay with it. Till I realized how detailed the tests would be in these subjects. This, in my mind, was ridiculous. I cannot even articulate the English language in a way that would express my hatred for these utterly useless classes.

I am not inspired at all so far to do well. Perhaps something might change my mind in the future but I cannot perceive that occurring at all. I will however stay in college and get the grades I get because it makes my parents feel better, not that they know anyone that has anything to show for going to college either.

P.S.

I am obviously not one of those who have been brainwashed into thinking you need school to live, and I wanted to mention that the only reason a majority of people who drop out of schools commit crimes is most likely because their parents had told them as mine have told me over and over again “if you don’t go to school the only way you will survive is stealing stuff.” “The bigger the lie, the more they believe it” would be the right quote here I guess. Feel free to argue against me on this point. I could be wrong, who knows, but from what I’ve seen so far I will remain adamant in my views.

The Nature of Landscape

This was one workshop I liked because it dealt with photography. I like to look at pictures and take pictures as well. I also liked it very much because nature is one of the topics I enjoy photographing.

My Beautiful Laundrette

This workshop was interesting. They did not have the film or did not know how to work it so we did not get to watch the movie, although I was interested. But we were given credit anyway, because we showed up and waited about 20 minutes till they told us they could not show it.

Academic Advisement

This workshop was very helpful to me. It helped me plan for my next schedule and a bit for my future years in Baruch.
