Job Convention

So last thurday i went to the pre-job convention workshop. Basically, i only went because i needed one more workshop and this centered around what job representatives will be available in the convention. It was WAY too long… full 2 hours with no food. It started off interesting because we were told how to act during an interview, and how to do an elevator speech, but after you go to 5 workshops, most of this information is recycled and useless.

The worst part was when they opened up the Q/A, people kept raising thier hands to just hear themselves talk, asking questions like ” What should we wear to an interview.” — Valid question, but when they give you a 20 page packet with step by step guidelines of what to do and what not to do, you are just wasting everyone’s time.

All in all, i wouldnt recommend this workshop to anyone not going to the job convention the next day.

another workshop

Last week, my friend went to the Love Is Blind workshop, so I literally had no choice but to go with her, even though I already have all my requirements.  It was in the NVC room 5-180 from 12:30-2.  I had absolutely no enthusiasm going there, but in the end Im happy I did. The whole thing was more of a group discussion than a “workshop” because all the people contributed personal stories concerning the topic. There were actually some students who took very strong positions for or against the issue during the argument to make others express their opinions, but in the end turned out to be just actors. So that was amusing to see.  Overall, it was an interesting experience and we got free pizza.

Event that substitutes for a workshop

So me and Derrick were bored and decided to check out this Anit-Stress Event that the Psi Chi International Honor Society put together. I thought it was suppose to be boring and someone gives you a speech on how to manage school and work and blah blah. Suprisingly that wasn’t the case. People were playing video games and getting massages!!! I was just like wow. I didn’t get a massage because I didn’t want some stranger rubbing up on me.

It was really cool though people were mingling and laughing and all that good stuff. The thing was that there were tables set up that told students different ways to deal with the stress of school and life, you know. Me and Derrick stopped at this one table….big mistake. I know she was talking about the method of meditating but it was just wierd. You know how in Charlie Brown you don’t know what the adults are saying, well it was sort of like that. We still signed her sheet so we could get more information anyway.

So yeah… we played some games, we didn’t really talk to people though. Got this cool little paper that tells me all kinds of information it even has an area for me to bang my head on. (This is evidence that I am keeping) All together it was a pretty interesting event. I’m glad I went because right now, man I need to learn how to get my life together.

ON OUR* ENGLISH RESEARCH PAPER.

*our meaning ENG 2100 DG35 with Professor Vecchio.

I wanted to write about Angelina Jolie because she’s banging. But she was not one of our choices so I ended up writing about why the the staff members of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL are representative men and women.

They won the 2003 Pulitzer for Explanatory Journalism for their series of articles on corporate scandals. Here is some interesting information  from those articles on why corporate America has problems:

  • After paying $6.5 million of a CEO’s personal expenses, and there after filing bankruptcy, a board member in a company realizes that “it doesn’t make sense for the company to get intertwined with an executive’s personal finances.
  • Because a CEO defered his salary (defering means letting the company give him the money after he retires or after he is no longer working there,) the CEO accumulates $8 million dollars in interest.
  • A company (Tyco) considered that the apartment it bought in NYC for its CEO was necessary for him to do his job. The company’s headquarters is in NJ and the CEO needs to be in the area to do business. Ok. The apartment had $11 million worth of art, furniture and antiques, including a $6,000 GOLD AND BURGUNDY SHOWER CURTAIN.

First the corporations crashed, then the banks, then everything else. Now we are in a recession.

Allan Greenspan says : “the greediness of human beings didn’t increase in the 1990s, what increased were the number of opportunities to satisfy that greed.”

Do you agree with him?

community-global awareness

Hi guys!!

This blog is about the community service. Well first of all, I was not able to make it to the new york cares day. I really wanted to go but because of my job i was not able to make it 🙁 I was checking out the pics that you guys posted and it looked like fun… maybe next time i’ll go!! So, since I did not go to the new york cares day I had to other community service. The school was having a food drive so I had to donate 20 dollars worth of canned food. That took me a while, I had bought the food but my dad threw out the receipt lol. Then i had to go back to the store and return it then buy it again! phew that took a while. But the good thing was that I still did the community service. Even though i did not get to help children paint there school I got to donate food to the homeless. So i feel a sense of satisfaction 🙂

the **long** overdue post on the: WORKSHOP for ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT.

It didn’t help. All I did was get my paper signed. I learned nothing new.

What did help was Ana’s explanation of DEGREEWORX. I was lost before I knew there was such a program. I made my schedule according to my requirements, and I already know what classes I need to take during the Fall 2010 Semester.

Overall I’m really happy with the schedule. I’m taking Global History, Micro, Art, Math & English.

I still don’t know what major I am going to declare. Damn.

student services fair… a while ago :-)

hey!!

Well I’m blogging about a workshop… it was the student services fair. It was pretty interesting it took place in rm 1-107.  I’m pretty sure its the multipurpose room. Anyways it was the room where we went to, for convocation. Basically the room was full of tables with things like student life, seek program, health service, early learning center, transfer center. And at every table there was a person that was an expert in that field. We had to go to like 10 different tables and get our ticket punched. At each table we were able to ask any questions and they gave us a quick overview of that area. It was helpful to me because, there was a table on the transfer center and I found out that Baruch still had not received my credits from some colleges classes I had taken in high school!! So yeah that was extremely helpful and good thing I went to that workshop… I enjoyed it because it was different there was no speaker or speeches so it was nice 🙂

the **long** overdue post on the: CLUB FAIR & clubs & such… :)

hi !

At the beginning of the semester, i went to club fair. I had only one club in mind that i wanted to join, and i could not find it. So i ended up joining the Tae Kwon Do Club.

Tae Kwon Do is very different from otehr styles of Martial Arts that I have practiced for several years. An extreme emphasis exists on following directions. All flexibility and open-mindedness goes out the window.

I hate that. I like doing something in the way that it is naturally comfortable for me to do it.  I can’t do that at the Tae Kwon Do class.

I was told that I need to work on my character and respect my authorities.  It was humiliating to be criticized in front of the entire class.

In Philosophy 1500, we learned that the people who can help to develop your character, who can point out your mistakes, and who can intellectually challenge you are your ENEMIES. I understand this concept and respect it by continuing to attend Tae Kwon Do class.

Maybe I am missing something and I need to really amend my behavior. Maybe I am doing the right thing and people are envious. I’ll see.

resume writing

I recently went to a workshop about resume planning for future jobs. Although I didn’t find it too interesting, I found it very useful. They explained everything needed for a resume and got me thinking..I really need to join a club or something soon.. =/

ny cares day

so earlier in the year I painted a school in brooklyn with some of my freshman seminar peers. Unexpectedly I had fun. I was expecting a gruesome couple of hours, painting classrooms which I’m very bad at- may I add. But actually, it felt good to give back to the community and get to know my peers better. I found it to be a great experience and I’m glad I volunteered.
