Annual Student Services Fair

Category of Workshop: Academic Advisement
Date/time of workshop: 10/13/09, 12:30

This workshop took place in VC 1-107. There were several booths set up for different services that Baruch offers to its students. Some services that were provided include the writing center, financial aid, student life, Bursar’s Office, Registrar, SCDC, etc. There was also a raffle at the end of the fair. Unfortunately, I did not win.

I selected this workshop because I thought there would be more student services that I still did not know about. (I basically wanted to take advantage of all the resources offered to me by Baruch.) However, I was severely disappointed because the booths seemed like they were geared towards really clueless freshmen. One thing that did surprise me was the writing center. The representative at the writing center told me that the writing center was staffed by real professional writers. I thought this was pretty cool and I felt that this would be really helpful to me in the future. It is definitely something I should make an appointment for.
Although this workshop did not take me out of my element nor did it meet me expectations, I think this workshop is perfect for those who are not familiar with Baruch and want to take advantage of Baruch’s resources. This was a good way to introduce the services. I would definitely recommend this fair to anyone who is struggling in Baruch; the workshop offers a lot of information and support for students. However, one improvement that could be made would be a better date, preferably some time earlier in the year.  By having it so late in the semester, I think it is kind of pointless because students have probably already figured out their way around Baruch. Despite these flaws, I think the workshop did do its job, but it was a wasted effort for me because I barely learned anything.
