Title of workshop attended: Database Survival
Category of Workshop: Academic Enrichment
Date/time of workshop: 10/15/09, 12:45-1:15
The workshop was about how to use the database, found on the Baruch library website, effective and efficiently. The databases that were shown to us was EBSCO and LexisNexis, where the speaker explained several different methods of how to find exactly what you’re looking for.
The speaker began the workshop by saying that databases are more consistent and informative than Google. It provides searches that can be concise and lead to full text documents about any subject. He used the example of “athletes and steroids” to show how the words you type into the search matter. He explained to us how to find pictures and use the left and right side bars.
I chose this workshop because my English teacher wants us to get familiar with the database in order to help in papers and projects. I thought if I went to this workshop, I would be able to understand more of how to specify my searches and find only what I need.
This workshop didn’t really take me out of my comfort zone but it helped me discover more aspects of the databases that I didn’t know before. The fact that we can directly see a magazine article or view pictures was something you can’t usually find with google.
The workshop met my expectations and I would recommend it to someone who’s looking for a better place on the web to do research. The databases are available where ever there’s internet connection and all they need to do is log on with there Baruch user name.
