Category of Workshop: Career exploration
Date/time of workshop: I’ve had three appointments with Gabriel already.
Although this is not a workshop, I feel that the career counseling at the SCDC has helped me a lot. Initially, I made an appointment to see a career counselor because I wanted to figure out if Economics was the right major for me. The first appointment I made with Gabriel, we discussed some basics about my family and how I was raised (poor income family, middle class, with an overachieving older sister, stuff like that, etc). Then, he reccommended a Myer-Briggs test for me and scheduled the new few appointments. The second time we met, we discussed the results of my Myer Briggs test. I am a ISTJ. I think the test correctly depicts the personality I have. Then, he recommended another test, the Strong test and scheduled me for another appointment. At this appointment, we discussed the results of the Strong test and scheduled another appointment. My next appointment will be this coming Friday and we will discuss the results of both the tests put together and hopefully I will be able to decide on a major.
I think this career counseling is EXTREMELY helpful. Prior to these meetings, I was uncertain about my major. However, after only three meetings, I feel that I will most likely major in Management. From Gabriel’s assistance, I realized that I have a strong interest in management, which didn’t really surprise me because I was deciding whether I should major in Economics, Finance&Investments or Management, but now I am pretty sure that I will end up majoring in Management. Gabriel explained to me the qualities of management and I felt that I have the skills to become a great manager and I am also interested in management. This is a huge weight off my shoulders because now I feel I have a clear road ahead of me. Before, it was blurry because I wasn’t sure what I wanted but now I know what I want.
I would definitely recommend making an appointment with the SCDC especially if you want to discuss your future. The SCDC is very helpful in listening and helping you decide whether the path you are on is a good path choice for you. Even if you are already certain about what you want to do, you should still go make an appointment to reaffirm your decision. So if you want to learn more about yourself (I guarantee this will happen, you will learn something new about yourself!) or if you just want tips regarding your career, go check out the SCDC.
