The workshop I attended falls under the “Career Exploration” category and is called “Career Planning: Internship and Goal Setting” and it took place on Oct. 22, from 12:30 to 2:30pm in the Multipurpose Room. The workshop goal is pretty clear-cut. It’s basically a presentation about different types of internships, such as paid, un-paid, and credit internships that we can take on. The presenter is in touch with employers who look out for Baruch students, so she told us the inside details of what employers are looking for in potential employees. We received an internship manual that is full of information and seems to be very helpful. I learned at the workshop that taking classes about a career you’re interested in is not enough. You have to get an internship to get the full hands-on experience to see whether you really enjoy the field you chose. We discussed the 4 big companies for accounting that have internships, such as Ernst and Young, and the presenter encouraged us to take advantage of STARR search to find ourselves an internship. The presenter also placed emphasis on the one thing that every other workshop has been telling us to do, and that is to make connections, because networking is very important.
I selected this workshop because I am interested in finding internships for the experience. The workshop did not take me out of my comfort zone because all we did was discuss internships and companies. There was nothing out of the ordinary that we had to do. The workshop met my expectations because it was so thorough and it provided us with so many ways to obtain more information about internships, such as the STARR search website and the manual. The presenter knew what she was talking about and delivered information in a way that kept me interested, so that was very helpful. I learned a lot about internships at this workshop and I would definitely recommend it to another student.
