Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition

The Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition is held at the Baruch College Sidney Mishkin Gallery. I attended this gallery on November 4. The exhibition presents a wide range of  Mercedes Matter’s best works. Her two earliest works were completed at age 9 and the third work was completed by at age 15. Her work ranges seven decades, starting in the 1930s and continuing to the 1990s.

Matter enjoyed using bright colors, pastels, and oil paints and presenting her works on canvas. Matter used a lot of shapes and abstract patterns throughout her work. Even though the gallery is small it was a fitting environment to present the exhibit. I enjoyed walking around the gallery. It seemed like any other art exhibit you would find at a museum. Her paintings show the transition through her life and become more detailed as she gets older they become more defined. I felt like this was one of the more interesting workshops that I attended throughout the semester because I was able to explore the exhibit on my own.
