freshman reception = academic enrichment

welcome to freshman reception !!!

Sept. 17, 2009 Rm 5-215 Center for Academic Advisement 12:30 PM 2:30 PM

The freshman reception was a huge turnout. Ms. Brown, an adviser at the Advisement Office was just as amazed to see so many freshmans show up at the event. The workshop itself didn’t last long due to the amount of freshmans that came to the event, for many had thought it was mandated for them to go.

The workshop in general was designed to help freshmans understand what is required on their part towards their degree.  A folder was given out with information such as the classes that are mandated for freshmans to take, along with a declaration form for declaring a minor at Baruch. Ms. Brown didn’t go in detail but briefly explained the information within the folder. An interesting statement that Ms.Brown mentioned was that in order to set up an appointment with an advisor, one needs to have atleast 75 credits. On the other hand there are peer mentors at the office ready to answer any question one might have. Ms. Brown also mentioned, if you want to check the progress of your academic work, you can check it through the Degree Audit program online. Even though I didn’t receive a folder, because the department ran out of copies, I did learn the basics of what was inside the folder. There will be more copies that will be available at the office next week for those who were unable to acquire at the event.

To sum it up, I selected this particular workshop to get informed about what courses to take next semester and what to do on my part to prepare towards the degree. The workshop didn’t take me outside my comfort zone because, I went with an open mind to learn and acknowledge what I, as a freshman had to do on my part here at Baruch.

I would recommend the workshop because much can be learned. Personally speaking, as a freshman I don’t know everything I have to do towards attaining a degree, so this workshop is helpful. It is a way for the advisors at Baruch to guide you and help you.

Freshmen Reception 2009

Title: Freshmen Reception 2009
Category of Workshop: Academic Enrichment
Date/Time: September 17, 2009 / 12:30-2:00PM

The workshop I attended yesterday aimed at welcoming students while offering answers to whatever questions we had from the the first few weeks of our experience of college. An adviser introduced to us some of things we need to know such as selecting our minor, the courses we needed to pursue our majors and how we could contact an adviser if we needed help. Basically, it was a refresher overview that was similar to the presentation at Freshmen Orientation.

I selected this workshop because I was hoping the advisers would be able to offer advice in what major would fit closely to my interests. Because I have something in mind, I wanted to pursue it, but maybe their would be something that corresponds closer to what I want. I figured that I should know as much as possible earlier so that I wouldn’t have to search for answers in a mess later on.

Well, the workshop was not what I expected, due to the amount of people planning to go the reception. Well, I understood how a lot of people misunderstood that this was a “mandatory for all freshmen” workshop, when it really wasn’t. After splitting us into different groups, Mrs. Brown reviewed to us about the topics I mentioned earlier. I had not gotten a a folder with the minor paper and other information, so the reception made me realize I was missing something. The workshop was very brief since the event took a turn for a different direction. I couldn’t say I learned a whole lot from this experience, but it was a refresher of sorts.

Freshman Reception

Title of Workshop: Freshman Reception in the Center for Academic Advisement

Category of Workshop: Academic Enrichment

Date/Time of Workshop: 9/17/09 12:30-2:30 pm

Description of Workshop & its Goals: For freshman to get to meet one another in a social environment, while at the same time we were able to have our questions answered by the academic advisors.

I chose this workshop because I was interested in hearing what the academic advisors had to say. I’m a new student and need as much advising as possible. I don’t want to make any mistakes out of ignorance that are easily aviodable. I wouldn’t say that this workshop “took me out of my comfort zone” but there were a lot of people there- something that I am still getting used to coming from a very small high school.

The workshop is what you make of it. If you want to be social and meet new people, its perfect for that. If you want academic advisement its also good for that. The academic advisors rock.

I learned a lot from the workshop, and even met a few new people. The academic advisors are nice, not scary at all and they are really willing to help you.
