Career Planning: Internships & Goal
[Career Planning][Nov.10, 2009][Rm. 3-215][12:30 PM-2:30 PM]
The career planning workshop was about internships available for students at Baruch. Ms. Conway who is the director of the Internship program at the STARR Career Development center, discussed about the different types of internships and the companies that are looking for interns and how a student can apply for the internships. Internships are open for anyone and everyone to apply, but the truth is that the companies take limited number of interns. The speaker also advised freshmens to focus on academics this first year because the GPA plays an important role. Prospective employers look at the GPA as one factor for accepting the person for the job. Along with the GPA, there is also the resume and cover letter. The STARR Career Center actuall helps in looking over the resume and cover letter and polishing it up before you go and send them to prospective employers.
One type of internship which was highlighted for freshmens is called Special Leadership Programs. This program, along with the other internships help you to develop the skills and networks within the field. There are many benefits of interning for a company. The major on being that you gain first hand experience within the field. But besides internships, you should also get involved in Clubs at Baruch and or other volunteer programs to build leadership and communication skills, and along with networks.
This workshop was really helpful and provided resources in being aware of internship opportunities provided by big companies like JP MORGAN, OGLIVY, etc. I specifically chose this workshop to learn more about how one can be an intern, where is the best place to look for internships, and how to apply for them. I would highly recommend this workshop for everyone because there is important information discussed. The information is not confusing and the presenter clearly explains the aspects of internships.
