Internships and Goal Setting

Career Exploration – VC 3-215 | 12:30-2:30PM

I attended the workshop for internships and goal setting and to summarize it, we went over the ways in which we could get in touch with the STARR Career Development Center and how we can put ourselves in a better position to access internships or Leadership Programs. I previously did not have a clear understanding about how to get into internships and where to start, but this workshop helped me understand it a bit better. She informed us of the steps we need to take in order to prepare ourselves, which include networking through TEAM Baruch or clubs, preparing a resume and having it read over by the STARR Center, and making sure we understand what our personal status is with grades and work.

I felt that I got a lot out of this workshop like with the information on where to access internships and big recruiting companies. The booklet we received contained a detailed explanation of the process and it included examples of resumes and cover sheets. I would recommend this workshop to others because in order to schedule an appointment to see Ms. Conway, the internship adviser, you’ll need to attend a workshop first. They are helpful to gain new experience in fields of interest and acts as a pipeline towards a full job. Internships are also “extended interviews” where companies can see your performance in real-time which could lead to a full-time job there.

Academic Advisement

Meeting with Academic Advisor
Personal Enrichment Workshop
Friday 10/09  10:30

I met with an advisor (actually the same on that give us the workshop last friday) and it was a huge help. He outlined for me all the classes that I took this semester, and how the courses that I took in HS translate into college credit. Then he gave me a sheet and clearly highlighted all the classes that he recommended I take this spring.

This workshop exceeded my expectations. I was lost and did not know which classes I should take this spring. Meeting with an advisor clarified things and really set me in the right direction. I figured it was worth the time and the wait because in the long run it was very very useful.

The advisor was extremely helpful and in our meeting, in a very short amount of time he was able to answer all my questions and clarify any confusion.

I would definitely recommend an academic advisement session to anyone who is confused or does not know what classes to take. The advisor will be able to give you a professional insight as to what you should do, and their perspective will most probably be the most useful.

Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition

The Mercedes Matter gallery exhibition falls under the Arts at Baruch category. It took place on 11/3/09 from 1:00-2:00pm at the Sidney Mishkin building on 135 East 22nd street. This workshop consisted of a brief gallery tour of the art works of Mercedes Matter, from her early compositions to her later works in life. Matter was an artist who used bold colors in her paintings to attract viewers. She was especially drawn towards still-life, 2-D paintings of ordinary, every-day objects, such as fruits on a table. Matter used a lot of triangles in her artwork to hold everything together. For example, in her painting of a table with fruits, to keep the fruits from looking like they were about to fall off the table, she used triangles in between the plates to make it seem like nothing would fall off the table even though the angle of the table top was skewed.

The workshop didn’t take me out of my comfort zone. The gallery had a generally nice atmosphere and it felt like walking into a section of a museum, although it was rather small. Most or all of the artwork exhibited was borrowed from Matter’s son and the owners of her works. Mercedes Matter used a lot of abstract shapes in her art, which made it hard to understand what she was trying to depict. Her artwork is very subjective and at first glance a couple of her paintings looked like a young child’s scribbles. It took a while of staring at her work to figure out where the table legs in a painting was located, and to me that is not a good sign. There was one painting that I liked by Matter called “Seated Nude” because of the nice light colors she mixed, but overall I wouldn’t recommend this workshop to people unless they can appreciate abstract, bold art.

Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition

[Arts at Baruch Center][Mishkin Art Gallery][11-04-2009][1:00 PM]

Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective was an art exhibition containing some artwork of Mesrcedes Matter.
It was held at the Mishking Art Gallery located at the E.23rd Street. Groups of 25 people were allowed
to enter the gallery and view the artwork. Once inside the gallery, the curator, Ellen Landau gave us the
tour of the place. She first started with the section containing early artworks which Mercedes created
as a child, along with other works that she created as she was budding out to be an artist. Landau
explained how the paintings differed from those during the Renaissance period. The Renaissance artists
were very attentive to details and the colors they used but with the development of the camera, it all
changed. The camera transitioned artwork from being detailed to being more abstract. This abstract form
is apparent in the works of Mercedes Matter. As you go through the gallery, you notice the bright colors,
lines, and shapes which Mercedes used in order to create the still life paintings. Many of the artwork
that was displayed were collected through the private library of the artist or from individuals who bought
the artwork.
The motive behind holding this event was to expose students to artwork. As Ellen Landau stated: being up
to date with the different forms of art, whether music, theater, or gallery, it is important for those
especially in the business field to know about them. By having a background of these works of art one can
engage in a conversation without seeming lost. She also emphasized to take the opportunity of being a student
and visiting museums which sometimes are free for students and learn about the different cultures.
The Mercedes Matter: Retrospective was a good experience once inside the gallery. The only downside was
waiting for your turn to come to see the work. If you don't mind the wait and are a fan of art, then I
would highly recommend you to check out the gallery. But even if your not the art person, the paintings are
interesting in their abstract form. There nothing wrong in checking it out.

Resume Writing

Resume writing [Starr Career] -took place on 10/27/09 at 12:30 p.m. – was a very informative discussion of how to properly write resumes and cover letters. They gave us tips on how to present ourselves and take care of little things, like making sure our voicemail message clearly states our name so employers don’t make a mistake leaving messages to wrong people in case of a typo or other errors. It was succinct and straight to the point. They clearly knew what they were talking about that no one had any questions regarding resumes and other factors that help in getting a job. It didn’t take me out of my comfort zone because presenter was very friendly and was coherent in her speech that I didn’t need to ask any questions. I would definitely suggest everyone to attend it because resumes play an essential role in how employers view you: it becomes your face when you aren’t there to present yourself.

Film Series:”My Beautiful Laundrette”

Category of Workshop: Community-Global Awarenress
Date/time of workshop: 10/16/09, 2:50-4:30

In this workshop we were supposed to watch a movie about a man who turns his uncle’s rundown laundrette into a profitable business. I got this info from Wikipedia, being that the movie was canceled on that day. I took a while to blog about this because I wasn’t sure if I should with the fact that I never actually saw the movie. However, the peer mentor who was present signed the books of everyone there. I wanted to fulfill my global awareness workshop without having to donate blood or go to walks, which I am unable to do.

Everyone waited in the large lecture room for about fifteen minutes before it was announced  that the workshop was canceled. Honestly, I wasn’t looking forward to the movie because it wasn’t the type of thing I would watch. Nevertheless, I was open to anything I might have learned from it. I believe the movie could have taken me out of my comfort zone from what I could tell of the plot. I can’t say that I can or can not recommend this workshop because basically, it didn’t really happen.

Internship Workshop

Career Planning Workshop
Internship Possibilities
10/22/09 12:30-2:00
Goal of the workshop was to educate students and explain to us how internships work, the different types of internships, what we need to do in order to get a good internship, etc.

I chose this workshop because I thought it would be interesting. This workshop really did not take me out of my comfort zone at all. Basically the speaker spoke to the room of freshman all about internships. She did not force you to do anything basically all you had to do was sit there and listen. If you wanted you could participate and answer questions, but she did not make it a requirement.

This workshop failed to meet my expectations because I was not taught anything new. I have already been interning for months, and I had a very good undertsanding of what internships are all about. However, I would recommend this to a student that is unaware.

I really don’t mean to be pessimistic, but I really did not learn anything from this workshop.  In fact it actually was counter-productive because I had to miss 2 hours of interning to attend the workshop!

Interships & Goal Setting 10/22 @ 12:30

This workshop was meant to gi s information about different internships, explain to us howo pobtain one, where to look and where to find one.  It also explained how to set goals for our future at Baruch and the workfield.

I selected this workshop because come my sophomore year I will hve obtained an internship and so the information did pply to me.  It did not take me outide my comfortzone because although it was interactive, i did not have to go onto stage or stan up or anything like that.

Thia met my expectations in that I learned a lot of vluable information that will most definately be of good use to me come next year! Something that I learned at the workshop was that we can obtain credit for an intership but only during our junior and senior years.  I would definately recommend this workshop to other people.

Internships

This workshop I went to was on 10/22/2009 in the same room as the study abroad fair if you went. This event was two hours, but very informative. The speaker was well aroused, and thankfully, somewhat interesting. This was great to learn about because she really emphasized how to get, work around, and use internships for the future. It’s not exactly something we should take on as  freshman but later on in our College career we should consider it because when we go out into the work force employers will see we have experience. She talked about the workshops we needed to attend in order to get our résumé reviewed  or to have a mock trial interview. Also, she noted that one of the students there helping got a number of internships through STARR and CDC. These tools really appealed to me because I have a full written résumé that should be reviewed. The workshops are to help explain what we need to do and write. So, really its perfect for getting ahead when applying for job. All you really have to do is participate a little and fill out  a review for the workshop. Overall, think this will be very useful. Even though it was long, it had a load of inportant information that I wanted to stay for so I would recommend it.
