Annual Student Services Fair

Today I decided to attend a workshop because its sort of required. At first I thought, “Wow this is going to suck a lot. I’d rather go home and sleep.” However, after I got my little information folder/handout and walked into the room, I realized that I in fact had a LOT of questions which I had never asked and just put them on hold. Luckily there were a bunch of helpful booths set up such as the Registrar one. I had received a mail from Baruch some time ago about signing up for next term’s classes yadda yadda yadda, I think I threw that out . While I was standing in line to get my card hold punched, I realized that I didn’t know Majors and Minors worked. I had a brief chat with the person and learned a few things here and there about getting into the Zicklin school. There were a lot of other booths such as Athletics, but I’m afraid I no longer swim as well as I used to so I just got my card punched and listened to his ramblings for a while. There was this one booth, I totally forgot what it was called but it was for child day care or something like that and the lady at that booth was talking to me about day care services and looked up and realized I’m pretty young to have kids so she just stopped talking and hole punched my card.

I have to say this was a very unique experience attending this workshop. I learned about registering for classes, walked around the room a lot because it was so packed, and totally did not win the raffle. So now that is 1 down and 5 to go. Bummer.

Gallery Tour: The Nature of Landscape

Category of Workshop: Arts at Baruch
Date/time of workshop: Sidney Mishkin Gallery, 1PM

The gallery tour was really surprising. It featured beautiful photography. At first, when I read the description about the gallery tour, I though this would be just regular photos of nature, which in my opinion, is pretty boring. However, it was totally different because it was the artist’s perspective of nature. The gallery featured a few pieces from different artists.

The only reason why I selected this workshop was because it was mandatory for freshmen to attand something arty at Baruch. This was the only free one. It DEFINITELY took me out of my comfort zone because I never really did enjoy anything that had to do with art when I was younger but I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this gallery tour. I would’ve liked more time though because I didn’t really get an in depth look at all the photographs due to the massive amounts of people that wanted the tour too.

For this workshop, I expected it to really boring with a really boring lady that is just going to discuss the history of the photography. Gladly, she wasn’t boring and she added her input and her opinion to the piece. She also gave us a little background information on the gallery itself saying that Baruch doesn’t have much funds but due to a strong alumni and powerful connections, the gallery is able to exist. I would definitely recommend this workshop to another student because nature is something every student can enjoy (I don’t think we get enough of it in NYC) and the way that the artists look at nature makes it very different and interesting.

From this experience, I think I should try to have a more open mind about art. Like I said, I was never really into it and from seeing the photographs at the gallery, I feel that it is important and it is not as boring as I thought it was. From this workshop, I think I will go check out the Met or MoMa when I have some free time.

Student Services Fair

The student services fair was today from 12:30 – 2:00. First you had to get an admission ticket by punching in your SS#. There were many stations where you could learn about a lot of the school’s different services. I found the Student Life, Financial Aid, and the Registrars, and Academic Advisement stations most helpful to me. The representatives explained very well what i can do for each station. The Academic Advisement station cleared up some stuff i didnt understand about what i can pick for my majors and minors. Registrars explained to me the requirements if you want to retake a course. They said if you know youre going to pass the class but with a very low grade like a D, then you should try your best to fail so you can get a W and retake the course. Athletics was also interesting. I learned that Baruch’s volleyball team has been on a winning streak since 1995 (I think it was the female volleyball team but I’m not sure). I also learned about the different kinds of teams there are. There is no crew team, since Baruch isnt near waters. I would have been interested in joining a crew team.

The actual student fair was pretty crowded. They put us in the rooms where we got our photo IDs taken. They gave us these cards with all the stations on it and we had to get at least 10 of them hole punched in order to get a workshop signature. Everyone was just scrambling to get their cards hole punched. I remember they were giving out some free stuff at one of the stations too.

Annual Student Services Fair

Category of Workshop: Academic Advisement
Date/time of workshop: 10/13/09, 12:30

This workshop took place in VC 1-107. There were several booths set up for different services that Baruch offers to its students. Some services that were provided include the writing center, financial aid, student life, Bursar’s Office, Registrar, SCDC, etc. There was also a raffle at the end of the fair. Unfortunately, I did not win.

I selected this workshop because I thought there would be more student services that I still did not know about. (I basically wanted to take advantage of all the resources offered to me by Baruch.) However, I was severely disappointed because the booths seemed like they were geared towards really clueless freshmen. One thing that did surprise me was the writing center. The representative at the writing center told me that the writing center was staffed by real professional writers. I thought this was pretty cool and I felt that this would be really helpful to me in the future. It is definitely something I should make an appointment for.
Although this workshop did not take me out of my element nor did it meet me expectations, I think this workshop is perfect for those who are not familiar with Baruch and want to take advantage of Baruch’s resources. This was a good way to introduce the services. I would definitely recommend this fair to anyone who is struggling in Baruch; the workshop offers a lot of information and support for students. However, one improvement that could be made would be a better date, preferably some time earlier in the year.  By having it so late in the semester, I think it is kind of pointless because students have probably already figured out their way around Baruch. Despite these flaws, I think the workshop did do its job, but it was a wasted effort for me because I barely learned anything.

Career Planning: Impression Management

Title of workshop attended: Career Planning: Impression Management
Category of Workshop: Career Exploration
Date/time of workshop: 10/13/09, 12:50-2:20

The workshop was basically about how to present the best impression when going to an interview for a job or even in the school environment. The speaker, Dr. Ellen Stein, not only talked about how the outward appearance of a person matters but also the attitude the person carries. This workshop’s basic goal was to help improve a person’s ability to present themselves well and properly in certain environments, especially in the employment field.

I chose this workshop because I wanted to know what exactly “impression management” meant and how it related to career planning. I didn’t really have any expectations for this workshop and it felt like it was just something else to get over with. This workshop didn’t exactly take me out of my comfort zone but it made me realize that the situations she explained about interviews and job searching wasn’t the easiest thing in the world. The speaker was involved with the students by asking us questions such as if we had networking websites and job experience. She also pointed out the pros and cons of texting and emailing and how it could affect your job.
She explained that some points of practicing good impression management were responsibility, respecting diversity, being positive, and being genuine. She also spoke about how important it is to be social and make connections in college in order to gain opportunities such as finding an internship or job.

I was surprised I learned quite a bit in this workshop about how I should watch what I say online or how I use my words in daily conversations. Even the little movements I make, like rolling your eyes or how you sit, can change a person’s first impression of you. By practicing, you can improve your whole presence which can ultimately get you far in school and beyond.

This workshop met my expectations in informing about how to present myself well in certain kinds of environments. I would recommend this to other students if they’re wondering about the basics (and more) of what the title says: impression management!

Student Services Fair

I attended the Student Services Fair on October 13th  which fulfilled the personal enrichment requirement. The workshop allowed students to browse the various student services and ask any questions they wished to ask. I selected this workshop because  I figured it would be an easy way to fulfull my personal enrichment requirement and since it’s a fair, it’s an open free-for-all where you can go browse whatever services you’re interested in. This took me out of my comfort zone because we had to go browse at least ten different services in order to get a signature. In some ways it met my requirements as some groups were informative while others didn’t really care as much and just hole-punched the cards. I would recommend it to another student because it helps the student learn things that they might not have known and maybe even get some free stuff. What surprised me was that you had to visit at least ten services in order to get a signature and that it wasn’t as crowded as the club fair. It was an easy and quick way to get the credit for the enrichment workshops while also being able to learn many new things about the services offered at Baruch.

Student Life 2009

Annual Student Services Fair 2009
NVC 1-107 | 12:30 – 2:00PM | Student Life

Today was the annual student life fair and I thought that since it was a large workshop like the Freshmen Reception, I would be able to get quite a bit of info about student life at Baruch. I didn’t realize it was going to be a table divided event so when I came in, I had questions for some of the subjects there. There were services like Academic Advisement, Student Life, TEAM Baruch, Leads, Medical Services and Financial Aid.

A group of people and I tried to get to as many tables as we could that we were interested in. In particular, I wanted to find out about the DegreeWorks because I had a problem accessing the site. They had a paper with more detailed directions so maybe I can access it later on with more accurate direction. I almost forgot that I had to pick up a minors form, so I’m glad I had stopped by the registrar’s table. I learned about the office locations and the guidelines for selecting a major and it’s helpful that they provided sheets to track ourselves for the future.

I think the workshop was effective because it gave students the freedom of selecting which areas they want to know more information about. Instead to drilling through each subject, people could ask questions that regard to them personally and not have to deal with information they already know about. I think that was more effective than a lecture style workshop. It got a bit crowded in the room because there were so many students that wanted to attend the workshop, so it could get a bit hectic, but chances are, you will still be able to hear the adviser’s comments and garb the sheets that they provide. I think it was a helpful experience.

Managing Relationships

Managing Relationships in College
October 8, 2009 | 12:30-2:30 | Personal Enrichment

I chose this workshop because I was interested on what they had to say about the ways we make connections in college. Since Baruch is a commuter school, all the talk about being away from friends and going off for college does not apply to us. Personally, I thought I should get something out of this because I don’t really have a conscious recollection of how I made friends throughout my life – it just happens.

The workshop covered different areas including relationships with family, love, and the workplace, as well as normal friendships. They are crucial to us during college because it is the time we establish good connections and it can help us excel once we are out of school. These relationships should be dealt with if there are problems because if we don’t, then we’ll be stuck with those issues for the rest of our lives.

She told us to expand our horizons of what kind of people we hang around with and what type of people to fall in love with. For example, she said that if we were always dating the same type of man or woman with an “annoying quality,” it’s not their problem; it’s our problem. We were addressed the issues of time management and communication, because during this phase of our lives, our schedules aren’t fixed day-by-day anymore.

I felt that I should be conscientious about relationships and how I’m going in life. Right now, it really doesn’t feel like I have totally changed my life by going to college – the same situations happen and I’m always in contact with my family. I guess that’s a luxury that I have, but I know that by next semester, I’ll probably feel the full impacts of new relationships. She also told us that we should register for LinkedIn because it serves as a social network for professional needs. I think this workshop was very informative and well-presented.

Relationships

Managing Relationships in College

[10-08-09] [12:45 PM- 2:00 PM] [Mason Hall]

The workshop “Managing Relationships in College” focused on fours main relationships: family, friends, romantic, and business. With the use of  a slide show, the presenter thoroughly covered every aspect of the workshop. She first started off with family relationsips and posed a question to the audience: Once starting college how has your relationship changed with your parents? Many answers included: not spending enough time with them due to overload in work, time issue (in high school you would come home at a certain time and your parents would know where you are but now being in college there is not a set time of getting home). The lecturer emphasized the transition in students and parents; students becoming more independent in college and parents having to realize that their children are growing up. She further explained that the sooner you talk to your parents about the shift from high school to college, the problem may be resolved. By talking to your mom and pop, they will understand your role in college and the need for independence and time.
In additon, when it came to friendship, she talked about cohort of people coming from the same school and hanging out together. She posed a question about how many people you have since having started college. Much of the audience replied that they were still trying to adjus to the vibe of Baruch and didn’t really know many people. In an effort to meeting new people, the presenter asked everyone to get up and introduce themselves to other people. Many were reluctant and failed to follow the orders. They remained in their seats and introduced themselves to the people around them. Noticing that no one stood up, the presenter then mandated everyone to get up and meet someone new on the other side of the room (i.e. right side of the room introduce themselves to the left side of the room and vise versa). This exercise put many people in an uncomfortable position, especially me. I am very shy and timid and so its strange and awkward to go and say “Hi” to a stranger. However, this was the main point of the interactive activity. It was to demonstrate that in order to make friends in college you have to take the steps yourself. The lecturer also emphasized that have a range of friends, that included freshmans and upperclassmen. Don’t be scared and intimidated by people you don’t know, but rather put the effort and make connections.
Talking about making connections, she also focused on networking and how it can be helpful. She advised that along with common networking site directed to communicating with friends, become a part of the networking site called LinkedIn. This networking site is helpful in making inside connections with individuals who work at major companies. By networking with them, you might be able to gain an intership and more. In fact, the presentor stated that individuals who are networking with these companies more likely receive jobs than those who graduate from college and don’t have connections.
Lastly, she talked about romantic relaionships. To make it interactive, she asked us to pair off in groups of three and have a discussion about problems associated with relationships once college starts. One of the main problem discussed was of conflicting schedule. How it is hard for the couple to get together and spend quality time. It’s even harder when your significant doesn’t go to the same college as you. In adittion the presenter stated on having healthy relationships and noticing patterns that you might form (i.e. being in relationships in which the girls sharw the common trait of being very talkative).
Overall, the ideas presented in the workshop were common and some things the general audience probably knew about. I would recommend others to go because it is interesting and interactive. At times it did put me out of my comfort zone especially when we had to introduce ourselves to people we didn’t know. Personally, I knew the main idea of the relationships discussed, but I did learn about the networking site called LinkedIn. Who knows it might be the site that might land me an internship or possibly a job.

Managing Relationships

The workshop I attended is called “Managing Relationships in College,” which took place on 10/8/09 at 12:30-2:30pm in (VC 1-107) the multipurpose room. This workshop falls under the Personal Enrichment category. The goal of the workshop is to improve and promote freshman relationships, whether it be romantic or friendly. It stresses the importance of networking in college. According to the key speaker at the workshop, she said that 44% of jobs are found through networking, so it’s a statistical fact that networking helps people out. The speaker also discussed how to manage relationships with parents now that we as freshmen hold much more responsibility than we used to in high school. She gave advice on how to improve our relationships with our parents, and one of her main points is to discuss the new changes we’re experiencing in college to our parents. The speaker also talked about romantic relationships in college, such as the healthy way to break up or hook up.

I chose this workshop because I was interested in the type of advice we would receive. The workshop actually did take me out of my comfort zone because part of the program was to get up and talk to 5 new people in different sections, introduce each other, find out facts about them, etc. It was sort of like an ice breaker, and this idea might have worked out well if the room wasn’t overcrowded by around 300 people. I ended up talking to around 10 people in a 5 minute period and forgot all their names, except for one person who happened to share a class with me. This workshop was supposed to take place a couple days before the second one that took place today, but the first one got canceled and I think that was the reason for the overcrowding at the workshop I attended.

This workshop fell a little short of my expectations, partly due to the overcrowding, but mostly because it wasn’t very helpful in my opinion. It was also shorter than the expected time and even though I arrived 4 minutes early, I had trouble getting into the workshop due to time announcement errors on their part. I wouldn’t recommend this workshop to anyone unless they have no other option to fulfill their Personal Enrichment workshop category, they just want to attend a rather short workshop, or they really feel like they need relationship advice.
