Keys to Success

Title of workshop attended: Keys to Success
Category of Workshop: Personal Enrichment
Date/time of workshop: 9/30, 6:00 – 8:00 PM

The Keys to Success workshop was basically three guest speakers (Hamilton Lin, David Kovacs, Elisabetta Bartoloni) who are apart of the Wall St. Training team. They talked about the keys to success, which included a step by step action plan on how to be successful, tips for interviewing and resume writing, and a section where questions regarding related business were answered. The goals of this workshop was to inform the audience to get a better understanding of the finance world and to promote their organization: Wall St. Training.

I actually really enjoyed this workshop. It was very helpful in informing me about the financial world. I think the most important thing I learned was “It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you.” This definitely took me out of my comfort zone because the workshop was geared towards older undergraduates who knew that they were planning to enter the financial world. However, I still gained some knowledge that I think will put me ahead because I am still a freshman. I would definitely recommend this to another student. Hamilton gave great personal feedback and offered a lot of advice on how to make it in the business world, especially if you wanted to go into finance. He was also very funny. David Koracs answered many questions that were asked. He was very blunt and did not sugarcoat his answers, which in my opinion was one of the best part of the workshop. Elisabetta Bartoloni was a little boring, but she offered great tips of how to get the interview and how to write your resume.

In the end, I think this is one of my favorite workshops so far. It was very interesting and I feel that it will definitely help me in my career. It also gave me a feel of what working in the financial world will be like. I was surprised of how competitive the business world is. I mean, I knew that the business/finance world was competitive but seeing so many people who had the same goals/intentions as me was astounding. From this workshop, I think I should really step up my game.

Club Fair 9/24 (PART II)

Well since my previous post was so poorly written that I was recommended to rewrite my post because it seemed as if I really wasn’t at the club fair. The club fair took place on September 24th from 12:00 to 2:30 pm. This was for the student life workshop and I found the fair pretty interesting. I actually got to the club fair at 12 on the dot and had my Baruch card swiped in. I was highly disappointed because there were only a few clubs there at the time. One club that was there early, on time rather, was the Arabic language club. This one stood out to me not because it was one of the few clubs there but also because my girlfriend speaks Arabic. Obviously I was thinking about joining to look good infront of her parents (Kidding). As time started to pass, by 12:30 more and more clubs began to pile in and before I knew it the gymnasium was packed like sardines. I must of walked around 20 times searching for my peer mentor, Tamanna, so she could sign my freshmen seminar passport and also to check out the other clubs and fraternities that’d interest me. However I was let down from both aspects. The fraternity I originally had interest in, Alpha Phi Delta, didn’t even have a booth set up. Secondly my peer mentor was no where to be found. I saw a lot of the classmates from my block looking for our mentor as well. Eventually I gave up looking and some representative at the student life booth signed my passport. All in all this workshop was pretty cool. It was definitely really hectic and at times made me feel a little out of my “comfort zone” because I was all by myself in a completely new environment. It would’ve been easier if I went with friends so it wouldn’t be as awkward, but that was 3 weeks ago. Things have gotten a lot better and I’m beginning to enjoy Baruch a little more each day. I’d definitely recommend this workshop to anyone because it’s definitely worth it. I believe everyone should join clubs make the best out of your college experience!

Sonia Sotomayor

Conference regarding Sonia Sotomayor took place on 09/17/09 at 12:30. She is the first Hispanic and third female to be appointed as a Supreme Court Judge.  Professors from Baruch’s History faculty discussed the importance of her appointment as a turning point in role of women in spheres dominated by men. Since Barack Obama won the election, there was a lot of speculation concerning Sotomayor as a possible candidate for a Supreme Court judge. Her nomination confirmed theories and showed progress that this country is making – crossing the barriers of race and gender. I can’t say it took me out of my comfort zone, but actually exploring topics relating to change of women’s influence in political sphere was very informative. I think it would benefit everyone to go to this conference, although I’m not sure there will be more, because it brings up important points on significance of this event as we watch history being made in front of us.

Gallery Tour: Nature of Landscape/ Photography

This workshop- took place on 10/06/09 at 1 p.m. at the Sydney Mishkin gallery- was actually very interesting and fun! I enjoyed it very much because I like art and since I’m taking Art History Class it was easier for me to identify styles and answer questions director of the gallery was asking in order to engage us. The picture that shocked me the most was the  4 Nudes in the City by Lucien Clerguewhich which at first glance looked like a desert – photographer’s manipulation of what viewer thinks he/she is seeing intrigued me. It didn’t take me out of my comfort zone because I don’t have trouble asking/answering questions while tour guide did a great job in pointing out certain characteristics of the pictures. I would suggest it to everyone because in addition to being entertaining it is also very brief.

Sonia Sotomayor

About a few weeks back I went to the Sonia Sotomayor conference held by many of Baruch’s own histroy teachers, mine included. This day was supposed to discuss the conflicts surrounding the nomination and approval of the first latin american female supreme court justice appointed ever. Professor Julie Des Jardines discusses the important role sex and gender came into play with the news media that surfaced around Sonia’s nomination. She discussed the vita role that Sonia plays as a woman pioneering the male dominated sphere of politics and the justice system. In conclusion to her observations she noted that there was much historical significance with Sotomayors situation because it elevates the feminine perspective into a predominantly male occupation. Another speaker, whom I forgot the name of, address racial issues that surfaced about from Sotomayors elects. She noted that hispanics were now becoming the new African Americans of the century because of anti-sentiment towards people of that particular race. The influx of Mexican immigrants into this country has obviously cause major changes in the way Americans are willing to allow them to succeed. In summary, the whole even was rather side tracked but very, very interesting. A lot of the topics were loosely connected to Sotomayor’s situation however the examples used were insightful and interesting. For the most part, if extra-credit wasn’t assigned and I had to change to go again I think I would because I learned a lot of sexual politics and racial-sentiments.

Blood Drive 10/6

Well today I basically went to donate blood. It’s pretty self explanatory. This was for the Global-Community Awareness workshop. The goals of this workshop was pretty much to find donors with healthy blood who are willing to share a little bit of it with those who need it more than they do. I selected this particular workshop because I’ve always wanted to give blood but the last time I tried I was really nervous so my pulse was too high. Then when I saw this event by Student Life, I immediately signed up.

Everything was pretty cool at first. I just had to fill out a few papers then have a nurse ask a few questions and run a few tests. Then when it was finally time to donate, I felt my nerves a lot more. When they revealed the needle I realized it was a lot thicker than a regular needle you’d see at the doctor’s office. I was pretty scared but it wasn’t all the bad once they stuck the needle in. It was pretty fast for me I ended before a lot of other people and didn’t feel dizzy or anything. I got a free shirt and free food too. It was pretty cool. I think I’ll donate again next time.

Gallery Tour: The Nature of Landscape/ The Nature of Photography

I attended the Gallery Tour on October 6th at 1 P.M. at the Sydney Mishkin gallery, which fulfilled the arts at Baruch category of enrichment workshops. The gallery offered a very brief guided tour of the various photographs showcasing art from Baruch. I selected this particular workshop because it is mandatory to complete as well as being an interesting and easy way to fulfill the requirement. This didn’t really take me out of my comfort zone because it was really short and didn’t take up too much time, which didn’t really alter my daily schedule too much. This workshop met my expectations because I figured it would be a fun and easy way to receive credit for freshman seminar. I would recommend it to another student because there are many interesting photographs to view and a tour guide helps you by explaining each photo. I don’t feel like I really learned anything new, it was more for enjoyment than for learning something new. What surprised me was that the gallery is very small in size and a photo in particular really stood out to everyone. The photo called “Four nudes in the City” as the name entails showed four nude bodies laying down on the sidewalk in the city. I didn’t expect to see a nude photo, especially since it is the school’s gallery. All in all, it was a fun experience that I would recommend to all other Baruch students.

The Nature of Lanscape/Photography 10/6 1:00pm

In thia workshop we were given atour of photohrphy of nature.  Each piece was diferent and unique.  The goal of the workshop was to show us the difernt techniques that photographers will use to kind of play with our minds.  I selected this workshop because I wanted to learn how photographers choose what they showcase in their art and how they are able to do it effectvely.  I’m not ued to analyzing art in such a critical way so I would definately say that this workshop took me out of my comfort zone.  It met my expectations in that i learned how to critic art antry to understnd what the artistwas trying to project.  I would recommend this to another student because it was a verywel kept and informative art center.  I was suprised to learn thatwhat the art piece seems to look like is usually the complete opposite from what it actualy is!

club fair

CLUB FAIR

[09-25-2009] [12:00 PM-2:30 PM] [Baruch Gymnasium]

The club fair at Baruch was met with much enthusiasm from the students. Before entering the Gymnasium, event volunteers swiped my ID and gave me a free map of the N.Y Transit (m.t.a). While waiting to enter the gym and look at the clubs, I could hear the music. While there were many students walking around to look at each club, there was a huge crowd in the back where the music was playing. With hip-hop and reaggae music blaring from the steroes, an upbeat and energetic environment was created.

The event was held to expose students to the many clubs Baruch offered. It was a way for students to get involved in the Baruch community and in the future to join and become a part of some of the clubs. The gymanisum was packed with club representatives, along with students who showed up to see what Baruch had to offer as recreational activities. Some of the clubs included: Mac Club, Music Club, Bowling and  Billiards Club, Eco Club, and etc. As you walked to each table, the representatives of the club greeted you with a big smile and enthusiam. They answered all the questions to the best of their abilities.

At first, I was indeed hesitant to go to the Club fair, because I didn’t know what to expect. When I did show up for the event, there were many students and the gym buzzed with conversations and the music. I also ran into old friends from high school and many other students from my classes.

At the end, I was really pleased with the Club fair. The representatives were very friendly and answered my questions. I am still debating as to what club to join but I know that I will join atleast one club. The fair allowed me to meet new people and interact with them. As I started walking around, the more comfortable I became with the environment.

If you missed out on the Club fair, I would certainly recommend you to go to the next Club fair whenever Baruch will have it. The Club fair is a great way to socialize with people and become aware of the different clubs the college has to offfer. Hopefully you might find one that may suit you and make you more connected with the community.

Club Fair

I went to the Student Life workshop: Freshman Reception at 12:30 pm on 9/24/09 in the Gymnasium of the Newman Vertical Campus.

This workshop was time when all the clubs of Baruch get a chance to interact and entice the Baruch student body. I wanted to make the best of my college experience, so i decided to join a club. The Club Fair allowed me to see all the different clubs Baruch has to offer, and that helped me a lot. I was able to talk to several different clubs that caught my interest, and they were all more than happy to give me more information about the clubs. I would definitely recommend this workshop to other students because it’s a great way to learn about all the different clubs available here at Baruch.  One thing that surprised me, and that i would warn the other student, is the amount of people that came to Club Fair. The day that i went, the entire gymnasium was packed, and everyone was practically on top of each other.
