Club Fair 9/24 12:30

The point of club fair was for all students to learn about the different clubs at Baruch and see how diverse they are.  I chose this particular workshop because I wanted to find a club that was for dancing, and i found two one was a regular ballroom dancing club, the other was a latin ballroom club.  I’m half Peruvian so i chose to join the latin ballroom club and it seemed likew the people were very enthusiastic.  I spoke to tons of new people, and therefore was put a little put of my comfort zone because of the amount of people there although at the same time it was very enjoyable.  I would definately recommend this workshop to other students because its a chance to meet new people and find out about all the clubs and organizations and see which one(s) you fit into.

Sonia Sotomayor 9/17 12:30

The point of this workshop was to understand and explain the role that Sonia Sotomayor is playing in the Supreme courts.  It was to show how the press is split into two parts, one side saying she is tough on and off the bench and the other saying she is tough on the bench but a sweetheart off of it.  I chose this workshop as my personal enrichment workshop because it was interesting to find out about a woman who is serving as the country’s justice on the supreme court, especially since there has been a very select few who have in the past.  It took me out of my comfort zone simply because I always hear about men;s history all the time and rarely do i hear about it from a feminists’ point of view which is what one of the speakers essentially was.  It definately met my expectations in that i was able to learn who Sonia Sotomayor actually was since I have kind of been out of the loop recently, and also i found out why she was so important and not only because she is a justice in the Supreme Courts.  I learned that she is the thirs woman to ever serve as a justice of the Supreme Court, and she is the first Hispanic to be elected to the seat.  I also leanred a little background of women’s history in the educatiopnal feild which was interesting since I had not known that Princeton and the other Ivy League Schools were slow in accepting women.  This is definately a workshop i would recommend to others becaus of how educational it was!

Nature of Photography

Title of workshop: Gallery Tour: The Nature of Landscape/ The Nature of Photography
Category of Workshop: Arts at Baruch
Date/time of workshop: 9/22, 1PM

I wasn’t expecting much from this workshop but in the end I found it very interesting and intriguing. The gallery tour was full of several different kinds of photographs depicting the world and nature in ways not how you would usually view it.

I honestly chose this workshop just to get it over with. I was initially planning to attending this at a later date, but since I wasn’t busy that day, I said ‘why not?’. There was a lot of people who attended this workshop, probably 20-30 people, which was slightly uncomfortable because we were in a small area. When the guide began showing us several pictures, I found the ideas the photographers were trying to covey really innovative and cool.

This workshop had me thinking outside the box and how there can be many different interpretations to the way you can look at things, as an example in the gallery was nature. I learned that if I were more observant of my surroundings, I could discover things I never would have imagined with just a glance. Also that the way other people share what they observe and conceive and open our eyes to different ideas and perspectives. I would definitely recommend this workshop to someone if they were interested in taking the time at looking at each individual photo and making your own observations. All in all, it was fun for me.

Freshman Reception

Title of workshop: Freshman Reception
Category of Workshop: Student Life
Date/time of workshop:9/17, 12:30-2:30

I mainly attended this workshop in order to get a better understanding of the classes I could take in spring. I was also wondering which minors were available knowing that we’d need to declare it next year, right?  So when I exited the elevator, I was surprised to see a massive crowd of people in the hallways. I expected a low number of students to come being that it was pretty early to start going to workshops. Well, I later realized some people thought it was mandatory.

Well to say this workshop didn’t help me at all is an understatement. The workshop lasted for a total of ten minutes, the Center of Advisement ran out of folders, and everything the advisor said was a rehashing of what I heard at orientation. Maybe it depended on the advisor, but I didn’t learn anything new. It could have been that because of the amount of people who came, she wasn’t prepared, I don’t know.

I wouldn’t really recommend this workshop to another student because there was nothing new to hear. I was expecting to get a lot of advice on how to go about picking classes for the spring semester and what was the best way to organize classes to achieve the requirements for the majors and minors. Oh well, maybe the next workshop will be better.

Club Fair 9/24

I attended the Club Fair which would fulfill Student Life on 9/24 at 12:30PM. The Club Fair was held in the basement gym and at the Club Fair, a lot of clubs gathered in one place to promote their club. The basic idea was to let the students know about the clubs that are in Baruch. I chose this event because I wanted to learn more about the clubs at Baruch and meet the people who are part of the clubs I want to join. It did not take me out of my comfort zone because all I did was just look around and sign up for the clubs I’m interested in. The Club Fair failed to meet my expectations because the club that I wanted to join was not there however I would recommend it to other students because I think it is a great way to find a club that they are interested in. From this experience, I learned that Baruch is a very diverse place which surprised me because I thought Baruch was more Asian orientated.

Freshman reception/Open house

I was actually one of the people mislead to believe that this workshop was mandatory (thanks Mom), but otherwise, I’m glad I went. For the most part I learned about my graduation requirements and when, how many and which courses I should select for my spring schedule. They say to know this information now because classes go instantaneously. It was similar to the freshman open house I went to which had already explained a little about the three tier minors offered at Baruch.

Mrs. Brown was able to answer my questions after because I was a little overwhelmed during the whole scoop of things. She told me that it was ok I didn’t take math this semester, but I have a set of courses like stats I need to take inorder to fuShe explained to me when I can take Spanish and how I can combine my interests of psychology (as intended major) and women’s studies (as intended minor). Something I really appreciated about this work shop, aside from those awesome cookies & lemonade, was the fact that questions were taken because there was about three questions I wouldn’t have asked that other kids did and I found the information following was very useful, especially about changing majors and Degree Works.

I would recommend it because it’s YOUR college experience. I typically like to stay on top of things and want to take advantages of all the free programs CUNY offers to make things go as smoothly as possible. Plus these are things you’re going to be doing for the next four years, you might as well know them at  your best from the start. It was hard because I never got a folder and still haven’t gone to academic advisement to get one. A lot of people were there that just took the folders and left or came around 2 p.m. and left, so unless you can withhold in your irritation over the matters above I think you’ll do fine. Plus it even ended a little early if you couldn’t stay the wholetime.

Study Abroad Fair 9/17/09

The study abroad fair is a place where students are able to get informaion on countries where they would like to study abroad in.  Representatives cames from many colleges and students are able to ask any questions and learn where in the world they should go to get the most out of their intended major and experience in a country at the same time.

I chose this workshop because I wanted to be able to travel to a country such as Peru, Greece, Australia, or Rome, earn school credit while I study abroad there and also enjoy the city as well.  I had to be outgoing and ask many questions like “what sets you apart from the other colleges that also have a study abroad program in Peru?”  and the representatives were always able to answer every question I had which was very good.

This definately met my expectations because I learned about the differnet possible countries I could go to, like Athrns, Greece with Queens College.  I would go to Greece and earn 3 credits for European Languages & Literature, i would stay for almost a moth and it would be about $3,530.  ALthough I would not be able to go this year, because I would need to wait until at least my sophomore year, which was a new thing i also learned while i was at this fair.  Although I can’t go this year I did learn information about where I would like to go next year or in the coming years!

Freshman Reception

I attended an Academic Enrichment workshop for freshmen at the Center for Academic Advisement and it was held on Sept. 17th from 12:30-2:30pm. This particular workshop was modeled specifically for freshmen, and its main goal was to keep students on track with the classes they still had to take depending on the degree they are working toward. The people responsible for keeping the workshop running were very kind and helpful. I received a couple of informative handouts. One of the handouts provided the web address to degree works, a helpful site which you can go on to see the amount of credits you have, what courses you’ve taken, and what courses still need to be taken for your degree. Another handout was a printout of a degree works audit for my intended major, which I could have easily accessed on my own through the site they provided on the first handout.

I chose this workshop because it was the first available workshop so far and I was curious about how workshops operated. The workshop didn’t take me out of my comfort zone because the people working there were helpful and well mannered and I didn’t have to do anything out of the ordinary. It met most of my expectations, but unfortunately they ran out of some handouts I would have liked to receive that day. Overall, the workshop was pretty ordinary and helpful, but I didn’t really learn anything new there since the information I received was already given to me a while back at freshmen orientation. My recommendation is for people to go to this workshop to get a quick overview and to pick up some handout sheets.

Freshman Reception 9/17/09 12:30

This was a workshop where freshman students were able to ask any questions, whether it be about the school, our intended majors, or questions about a club.  It was mostly to welcome the new students, specifially freshmans.

I selected this workshop because I wanted to know more about the classes I need to take in the future, amd what requirements my major (accounting) would require.  It took me outside my comfort zone a little bit because i had to interact with new people, and ask questions loudly if i wanted them to get answered sometimes.

I would definately recommed this workshop to other students because it was extremely informative, and even though you may be embarrassed to ask a question in front of people, most of the students had the same excat questions.  It met all my expectations in that I learned all the information I needed to.  The onlyt bad thing about this one was that many students thought it was mandatory for freshmans so it was really packed and everyone had to be split up into groups and friends were separated.  From this workshop I learned that i need to take a ton of math classes, but I’m taking it as one more challege that I will get through even if I need tutoring to get there!

Study Abroad Fair

Hey, well by mistake I went to the study abroad fair and found out some interesting things. First off I talked to the Baruch Office of Study abroad representative and she said that freshman cannot go abroad their first year. So, as a result I signed up for  a few countries to get information for my sophmore year. This made me pretty bummed because I went to a CUNY school because of the great study abroad initiatives they have. Did you know you can go to another CUNY College’s trip if your college doesn’t offer it? The booths are either set up by outside colleges, for example, Hunter college, or outside organizations and all have a set of countries you can visit. Some host the same trips while other offer completely different trips. My goal was to find a spanish speaking country that wasn’t Spain because I had already been to Spain, and although I do hope to return, I also desire some completely new experience. They ask you whether you would like to go to the centralized city, or a less populated area. After scavenging the many booths and reading up on some booklets I came to conclude that Peru, specifically the capital, Lima, was where I wanted to travel to next year. I went with my two other friends, one Claudia whose in my class and the other was Eldad. Claudia also wanted to go to Lima, Peru because she is Peruvian. Eldad wanted to go to Australia which I thought was an awesome idea. Another thing, for those who are interested in Biology, there was a trip that I think Brooklyn college offers to go to the Galapagos Islands on a coral reef expedition.  The trip itself sounded amazing and the photos were obviously to die for. Other places I was interested in learning about where Italy, because I speak the language as well and I am also half Neopolitan as well. The overall experience was very informative and got me pretty excited about where college could really take me, not to mention I made a new friend along the way.
