Information about Academic Advisement session

Dear Freshmen,

Your first semester in college is moving forward – Congratulations!  We hope you have enjoyed the adventures of meeting new people, studying new topics, listening to and expressing new ideas.  You must now begin looking forward and planning for your second semester at Baruch College.

For your first semester, you received a block course program.  You are now responsible for selecting your own courses for your second semester at the college.

Remember L.U.C.Y. –Linking Undergraduate Curriculum to You?   You reviewed the L.U.C.Y. session as you prepared for orientation.  We are asking that you review L.U.C.Y. again to prepare for your Spring 2010 registration.  With the help of L.U.C.Y., prepare your own registration schedule (course selections) for the Spring 2010 semester.  An academic advisor will visit your FRO class to review the curriculum, your course selections, and answer any academic questions you may have.

Here are step-by-step instructions on how to prepare for your advisement session.  It is important that you complete the assignment and come prepared for your FRO advisement session.

Please follow these three easy steps:

Step One:  Using your home or campus computer log on to http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/advisementsession/ and review L.U.C.Y.’s on-line advisement session.

Step Two:  Complete the registration schedule (course selections) on the back of the letter sent to your email.

Step Three: Bring your completed registration schedule (course selections) on the back of the letter, a pen and a highlighter to your in-class advisement session.

Ethics seminar

I decided to go to the ethics seminar today instead of swimming and was surprised to know that the meeting wasn’t even that long. The women conducting the seminar introduced herself as Emily and she was eager to jump into the topic of ethics. She was surprised to see that everyone who was attending was female and remarked how it coincided with her current studies which was gender issues. Some guys entered later on and sat near the back and she went on to do the first excerise.

The room was split into two sections, one side, the left was the agree section and the right side was the disagree section. She tend posed various scenarios of ethical dilemmas and asked us to pick a side on the subject. Once we made a choice we then move to the side we choose and explain why we made that choice.

It was interesting when she posed the scenario of “if a kid who is attending college on an academic scholarship, as in he needs to maintain a good grade to get the money, received a D from you and you had a choice to make it a C or let the kid get the d which would you pick” one guy said that he would curve the grade for the kid because if it was the guy in the student’s shoes then he wouldn’t want that to happen to him.

We moved on to talk about plagiarism, stealing and another fun scenario: the classic if there was only one life raft left who would you save problem. For the last one, people each took on the characters that are being saved and we debate on why we should or shouldn’t save such and such a person. A lot of the characters voted themselves off and there was two people who played the part of 13 yr old twins and someone said to kill off one twin and saved the other because no one would notice that one would be missing anyone. Another person counter argue that if only one twin is saved, then that twin would grow up to be the evil twin.

I have no idea how that works.

But that’s the whole ethics seminar.

Club fair

I thought the club fair was really helpful and exciting. Even thoguh there were many people there i managed my way around to enjoy it. It was really useful because there were so many different clubs that oyu can join and be a part of. I myself signed up for the Indian Club. Being indian this was cool because this way i can get to know people with the same backround as me . Overall the club fair was cool and i enjoyed it dearly

Sonia Sotomayor

I could not remember much from this workshop.  It was completely full and my friend I had to sit on the steps.  We could not see the speakers while they spoke and it was uncomfortable just sitting on the steps.  However, I do find whatever I remember interesting.  I thought it was amazing how Sotomayor was one of the few women who worked among men and was considered to be a pioneer.  She was also one of the first few women to attend Princeton.  It is incredible how Sotomayor worked so hard in a masculine environment and she really deserves to stand where she is today.

Club Fair

To be completely honest, I found the club fair to be more useful and more fun than freshman convocation. The music and entertainment were great, but more importantly I learned about all the interesting clubs that Baruch College has.  I ended up signing up for clubs like Latin Ballroom Dancing ( I have never learned to ballroom dance), the Handball Maniacs club ( I’m eager to improve myself) and the Arabic Language Club.  I also signed up for many academic clubs like FES and the Wallstreet Club.  Though I won’t join every single one of these clubs I signed up for, I was told by the club leaders that I can still attend their events, which I thought was great. Overall, the club fair was excellent.

Club Fair

The club fair was alright. It had alot of useful information. I don’t know if it’s because I got there early but it was boring. There wasn’t alot of clubs that caught my interest. After a few walk arounds and collecting the give aways I, left since there was nothing better to do. I was however interested in in ECO, BSU(Black Student Union), and NABA(National Association of Black Accounts).

Remember the Freshmen barbecue? This was almost the same except there where no food unless you count the handouts from various clubs. There wasn’t really much to do but walk around and pretended to be interested. LOL. But there were a lot of diverse clubs ranging from business to entertainment to culture, etc. There were some clubs that caught my eyes so i might go check them out during club hour. I did notice that there were a lot of fraternity/sorority even though Baruch doesn’t have a campus which is nice seeing how people can still party but get there work done.

This workshop was just like a lecture class. There were a lot of information presented not just on Sonia Sotomayor. There were 3 speakers at the workshop each had a different topic, only the first speaker focused on Sotomayor. It was really interesting how she spoke of Sotomayor background because she was just like anybody out on a street with a dream. She was able to fight through prejudice to obtain her dream which many people can not do. The other spoke of the struggles of African-American and Latino in American society today. Unfortunately i could not remember what the last speaker was saying.

They handed me a folder which included a lot of information that deals with the major/minor system that Baruch had.
