Club Fair

Category: Student Life

Date/Time: Sept 24, 2009/12:30-2:30pm

The workshop was fair to advertise clubs that Baruch offers. Students were able to sign up for clubs or find out more information about the club. I chose this event because it seemed interesting and I was interested in joining more clubs. It did not take me out of my comfort zone because it was a simple fair, no pressure. I went early so I didnt get to see the perfromances but I heard it was good. It met my expectations because the fair was setup like any other club fair. But the fair at freshmen convocation was better even though it had less clubs. I signed up for more clubs because I like to stay active in school.

Changing America Judge Sonia Sotomayor

Category: Community-Global Awarness

Date/Time: Sept 22, 2009/ 12:45-1:40pm

The workshop was about the different aspects of Sotomayor’s accopmlishment of becoming the first Latina woman in the Supreme Court. During the workshop there were three panelist who discussed the issue of race and civil rights, women rights, and Sotomayor’s rulings being a Latina. I chose this workshop because I wanted to why I heard that name so much because I haven’t been following any politics. I was not uncomfortable ate the workshop. It was actually more interesting than I expected. The part that I remebered the most was the second panelist who spoke of the racism that still exists. The workshop exceeded my expectations I’m glad I went to it. I would reccommend it to any students who believe in change for society, because it discussed where society is and how people like Sotomayor and Obama influence thier community. One thing I learned from the workshop is that although we have an African American presidents there are still many barriers that the African American people have to oversome even now in the 21st century.

Sotomayor

I know this is a little late but I attened the Sotomayor workshop a few days ago. Although this workshop did not really go into the history of Sotomayor, it explained the importance of her actions and the importance of her role in the supreme court. This group focused on the oppurtunity and equality of many blacks and hispanics. I am glad to hear of the changes that occur over the years starting from the civil rights movement to having a black president. This leaves hope that one day we might just have an Asian president.Besides the fact, Sotomayor spoke out for her community and she made a great example of someone who didn't have much, but worked hard and got to where she wanted to be.

club fair

I went to the club fair and walked around with a couple of friends...I heard about the breakdancing team but could not find them during the club fair. Not much clubs interested me because a lot were business organizations and sorority/fraternity. One that caught my attention was the anime club and I might attened some of those club sessions. And again Baruch is going pretty welll so far, nothing new.

Sotomayor

The panel discussion was alright. Although each of the guests speakers appeared to have their own agendas.  Of course, the topic of race, and equality and all that other stuff came up. I just wish people would stop complaining about it all and move on – it is ridiculously annoying and ignorant. That being said, I did not enjoy the discussion due to the speeches and such being about as dry as a desert in the summer. Would I go to another discussion like this in the future? Probably not. I learned more about Sotomayor while I was reading about her during my politics class when I was bored and starting to read biographies on Supreme court justices.

Club Fair

The club fair was for the most part enjoyable. The fact that we were able to go around and look at all the clubs was pretty interesting. It allowed me to get a quick snippet of what the club was about and what it offered. That being sad, I have to say that the clubs looked a little disappointing. For the most part, they seemed fun, but the topics that they consisted of and the whole general idea behind them I suppose seemed pretty boring to me.

This workshop did not take me outside my comfort zone because I am used to being around a lot of people and enjoy learning about new groups. The workshop itself did not fail to meet my requirements, but the clubs themselves did.

Club Fair

GYM [12:30-2:10]

The Club Fair gave the incoming Freshmen the opportunity to become acquainted with the various clubs Baruch has to offer. It also was a chance to be part of the non-academic aspect of college. Once again the gymnasium was crowded. Kids flooded to the fair either to fulfill FRO requirements or to be introduced to Baruch’s culture. This workshop gave me the opportunity to learn about all the clubs here at Baruch. I even joined a couple. In highschool, clubs didn’t interest me as much. But, at Baruch I’m trying to achieve the entire college experience.

Since it was crowded, I tried to get in and get out very quickly. I stayed for an hour waiting for some entertainment, however, that did not happen. I was disappointed that I didn’t get to see any dances. I could tell that the dancers were also getting annoyed that the music system was being difficult. Regardless of that downfall, I signed up for the Caribbean Club and the Ticker Newspaper faculty. Hopefully during the next few weeks I will learn more about them!

Club Fair

The club fair was crowded; I could see the line starting all the way from the turnstile, so I had decided to sit it out until later, when it won’t be as crowded. So I ate lunch and head down to a much shorter line.  They were handing out free subway maps, and that was nice and the entrance to the gym had a person signing the passport so we stood there for a while.

That was how the recruiters from the Ticker found us. They didn’t have a table in the area, so we wrote our info using the guy’s back. My friend and I walked around, having lost the rest of original group and found our way to the Japan society club which we had already signed up for earlier in the week. Although it doesn’t stop them from giving us brochures and pamphlets. We wandered around some more, signing up for clubs like the Movie Makers Club, Billiards and Bowling, the literary magazine, and some of their clubs that I don’t recall. Overall it was really hectic and I wanted to try the red velvet cake at MM Club but due to dental problems couldn’t. And then we left. I wonder if these clubs would seriously email us back. Or would it be like the Job Fair, where we don’t hear from them for weeks.

Club Fair

Yesterday, I attended the student club fair in the arc main gym during club hours.  This work shop was very informative, as are all the work shops.  I was glad to discover the diversity and variety in the many interests found in Baruch.  There were many different clubs and so many I would like to join. It’s tough to pick which one, though.  Being in a club, however, requires dedication and so, time managment is an issue here- this is one idea that struck my mind as i signed up for 10 or more clubs. This is deffinatley a workshop worth attending because everything avaible in the school, club wise, is presented to you.

Sotomayor Panel Discussion

So I went to the Sotomayor Panel on Tuesday and I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into, I just knew that it was in the same room as my music class.. ughhh. Fortunately, I really enjoyed the discussion. I got to hear a lot about the new Jusctice’s background which I did not know. I really liked the speaker who discussed how media portrays her. I thought it was really interesting that she felt that Sonia Sotomayor has to be feminized by the media in order to be accepted. Even though she was a pioneer in a masculine field of work, she is still not completely accepted unless she is portrayed as a “doting godmother” or “doting aunt.” I’m glad I went to this workshop and I wish I would have stayed for the whole thing, but the presenters went over time.
