Student Service Fair

I didn’t really get to the student service fair until later because I was at clubs but by the time my friend and I got there, they were starting to raffle off the two T-shirts and the thermos. We watched amused as the announcer pulled out names after names because non of the winners actually stayed long enough to claim their prize. One guy in the back told the announcer that he should just give the shirt to him and the announcer laughed and reached in the box for another name, which was the name of the guy who just spoke.

My friend and I first started at the academic advisement booth and asked the lady there how to register for classes and which classes should we as BA majors take. Her answers were insightful and she told us to visit their office if we have anymore questions. When we turn around to go to a different booth, we saw that some people were already leaving and packing up. A little worried, since we need to get 10 booths to punch our entrance card before we can get our planners signed, we just decided to ask the booths that is left any question we can think of. My friend wandered off to the booth for SACC and I stood behind another group of students who were talking to the man from the Writing Center.

Seeing that the man would be too busy to help me out, we regrouped and walked towards the booth for the health center to ask the lady there about flu shots. Next we went to the athletics booth, even when we had no intention of joining a team. The people there asked if we really had a question or if we were there to get our card punched and we told them the honest answer. Feeling bad I threw in one question just to fill up the silence. Our next stop was the Writing Center Booth where the man behind it was still looking eager to help instead of ready to bolt. We took about five minutes to hear him talk about the advantages of the writing center before we went to the booth for transfer and registration. We ask the lady behind it about our AP grades and possibility of getting credits for that class. She politely informed us that our AP grades aren’t credited but we just take a higher level course than other students. She then offered to look up our info on her computer and we stood around for another 2 minutes while she informed us about our classes and our immunization records.

There was no way that we can get ten booths to punch our tickets, seeing how there’s about 5 of them left, so we winged it and asked the lady in the front if she’ll sign our planners anyway. She agreed and we then left.

Managing Relationships in College

Sept.17,2009 [12:30-2:00]

The workshop was supposed to inform us of ways to balance our relationships in college. For some of us its been a a tough transition and for others it has been smooth. However, the multiple relationships we have are important to maintain and this workshop wanted to help us balance them. I chose to attend this workshop because I have always chosen school over relationships in the past. By doing so I hindered the growth of several relationships with people I was very close to.

The workshop taught me the importance of networking and how social networks will come to benefit me in the future. Networking was never emphasized as much in the past, however as the speaker began to explain its importance I knew why it was so important. This workshop met the expectations I had by addressing the wide ranges of relationships from romance to friendships to family ties that exist in my life. I think that I am beginning to adjust to my surroundings and meshing my college life and my personal life together.

Impression Management

Today I attended the Career Planning: Impression Management workshop, which categorizes into Career Explorations ( 12:30-2:15  room 3-215) .  This workshop, just as the others, was very informative.  Through this workshop, i’ve grasped the idea of impression management and how importnant it is to maintain a good first impression.  Also, i’ve aquirred a deeper understanding in the importance of details.  First impressions tend to be very detail orriented: the way you sit, the way you talk, and basically the way you come off will leave a chance for a sound judgement on your charecter.  Sucsessfully maintaining all of that will prove productive.  This workshop did not really take me out of my comfort zone, but it did remind me how important it is to not always lean back and relax, which is impossible for me to do anyways with the busy lifestyle of a college student.   I would reccomend this workshop to other students because it clarifiesa few brushups to embellish ones appeal.

Academic Advisement

I just finished the academic advisement session and i’m waiting for the raffle that they poorly planed at 1:30… so uhh… I had legitamate questions for like 7 of the tables, but some of the information booths kept talking and talking forever and they wouldnt punch your stub without you asking a seperate question which was ridiculous because they had just told the person in front of you everything they needed to know. luckily I got through it pretty quick since i have class at 2:30 and I thought it was supposed to go until then. I got a lot of useful information about where and how to register for classes and financial aid. Hope I win the raffle!  🙂

Gallery Tour

So I went to the  gallery tour last Tuesday, and I really enjoyed it. Since I moved to New York I haven’t been able to visit any galleries so this was my first oppurtunity. No one there really seemed to enjoy it but I was like the only one asking questions. The lady that set up the gallery had a very broad description of the word landscape which I thought was interesting. My favorite part was the Andy warhol pictures since I had never seen landscape pictures by him. I had only seen his pop art or celebrity photos.

The Nature of Photography/landscape

I enjoyed the  Gallery Tour that empasized on photography and landscape( 10-6-09-Sidney Mishkin,1 pm).  I love art work but it was alittle boring.  My attention spand is extremely short.  However, nature is always so peaceful and beautiful to me.  I enjoyed viewing the nice pieces with my fellow Baruch conrads.

Club Fair

The club fair was really really fun.  I didnt realize how fun Baruch was until I attended the club fair.  There was not one club that didnt spark my interest.  There was so many clubs, so many people, good music, and great entertainment.  I decided to join BSU(black student union) and I’m interested in applying for Baruch’s radio station club.  There is so much do to at this college and I advise all to get involved. Changing America: Judge Sonia Sotomayor

Yes I am about 3 weeks late on posting about this workshop.  I really enjoyed this workshop because the 3 panelists put forth points that I never considered or viewed in that same aspect.  Leaving the workshop, I felt a sense of empowerment and motivation.  I feel a connection to Sotomayor being a female and half  black, half  honduran.

One point that was brought to the table was that ” women’s success is always rationalized” (Professor DiJordan).   The panelist also proceeded by stating that minorities are always appeared to be blessed as if they didnt have credit in their own success.  I also enjoyed the second panelist, Professor Joanna Fernandez.  Basically, she spoke about the continuous savage inequalities.

I didnt expect the panel to be interesting.  I am glad that I did attend.  (9-22-09-VC 7-150, 12:45 to 1:40)

Managing Personal Relationships

On October 8 2009, I attended the “Managing personal Relationships” workshop (12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, room 1-107).  This workshop categorized into the Personal Enrichment category.  By attending this workshop, I was reminded for the 100th time, the importance of time management.  Every time I am reminded of this idea, I am always taken out of my comfort zone.  It is still an area I have to work on, since life is always just so busy.  This workshop pointed out the importance of a wide network of relationships with a variety of people.  Indeed this is important, as it enriches many categories of life: education, work, family and love.  This workshop established more than what I expected since they discussed “relationships” outside of we would know the term to be; this was good since it reminded us of the importance of keeping a wide network.  I recommend this workshop to all students since it is a little reminder to all the important aspects in life.

The Nature of Landscape

I attended the Gallery tour: The nature of landscape- the nature of photography workshop at Sidney Mishkin ( October 6, 2009 at 1:00 PM) ; this work shop fell under the “Arts at Baruch” category.  I’d have to say their method of presenting art work in small groups was pretty systematic.  We were better able to understand what each work of art represented.   This is one difference this workshop had that the others didn’t.  The whole simplicity of the place helped focus more attention on the art work, rather than the walls… which i guess is the point of an art gallery.  Our tour lady explained the representaitons of each picture and through this we learned that subtle details in pictures can really establish mood.  Indeed a picture is worth a thousand words.  I particularly enjoy art, so this workshop didn’t really take me out of my comfort zone, however, it was a little boring.  But I still love the natural beauty of nature.  If other students were to take this workshop, they would deffinatley realize little subtleties establish a lot in a work of art.  It was a pretty calm workshop all because of its category- nature.
