Freshmen reception

This was one of the first workshop that I attended and it was mainly about freshmen life, the resources that the school offers us and how to approach life and studding as a college student. i think it was helpful because it gave us an idea of what college is.

MEDIATING CONFLICT AND RESOLVING DISPUTES AT BARUCH COLLEGE

MEDIATING CONFLICT AND RESOLVING DISPUTES AT BARUCH COLLEGE

Personal Enrichment

Thu Oct 29 12:30pm – Thu Oct 29 2:30pm

This workshop was offered by Psychology Department Professor Mindy Engel Friedman, she introduced us about the Office of the Ombuds which is a place to provide students to solve the confilcts and disputes with the faculty, stuff, and other students. Through the role play, I think many students who attended that workshop have a better sence on resolving the conflicts among the campus.

That was the first time I know that there is this kind of service for students to effectively resolve the disputes. I like the little scenario the I played in my group, it was funny, and also meaningful.

Freshmen Reception Workshop

1) Title of Workshop: Freshmen Reception

2) Enrichment Area Fulfilled: Academic Enrichment

3) Date/Time Attended: September 17/ 12:30pm to 2pm

4) How did the workshops affect your perspective of the topic that was discussed?

I never really looked into how important this topic might be to my future college career but after I attended this session, it got me thinking what classes I would need to take to fulfill requirements for my intended major. It also got me thinking that wow I have to plan ahead because 4 years move very quickly so I have to step up my game about my classes and decide now what classes I want to take and what classes are mandatory.

5) How did the workshop take you out of your comfort zone?

It didn’t really bring me out of my comfort zone. It just made me think or consider what major I would like to take in the future and what classes to take in my 2nd semester of freshmen year.

6) Explain what the workshop was about and tell us why you specifically chose that workshop.

This workshop is basically about the requirements of freshmen year. The director for center for orientation and advisement went over the three tiers with us and the majors and classes we must take for the majors. I chose this workshop because I will know that I will get something out of it like I know what classes I would need to take now in order to pursue my major and to fulfill the requirements of that major.

Mediating Conflict and Resolving Disputes at Baruch

this workshop was great. I didn’t know we have an department that deals with resolving conflicts at school and what is his role. The session was very interactive and the students relay got involved in it, I liked the small scenery that we played…they were funny but also educative.

Resume Writing & Cover Letters Workshop

1) Title of Workshop: Resume Writing & Cover Letters Workshop

2) Enrichment Area Fulfilled: Career Exploration

3) Date/Time Attended: Wed November 4/ 10:45am to 12:00pm

4) How did the workshops affect your perspective of the topic that was discussed?

The Resume Writing & Cover Letters Workshop affected my perspective of the topic by helping me figure out the guideline and tips to write a proper and effective resume. I did not know how resume could be so effective in dealing with people until I attended to this workshop.

5) How did the workshop take you out of your comfort zone?

This workshop took me out of comfort zone by presenting me the importance of a resume. As living in a competitive global community, resume is a useful tool to briefly introduce yourself to others, including your identifying information, educations, skills and experiences.

6) Explain what the workshop was about and tell us why you specifically chose that workshop.

This workshop helped developing my sense of career. First, the instructor let us introduce ourselves to the person who sits next to. It was another way to take me out of my comfort zone. Second, he distributed a copy of skills assessment exercise, such as communication and leadership skills, and then he started to explain why those skills are significant to different areas in the real world. He told us what materials were requested in writing a proper resume, and got into each section deeply. During the workshop, he also provided us a website of sample resumes and cover letters. I chose that workshop because I was really interested in writing a good resume that could light up my career in the future. This Resume Writing & Cover Letters Workshop was worth one hour.

To People Who Are Getting Annoyed with the Workshops…

I NEED TO COMPLAIN.
so today I went to the arts for Baruch workshop and omg I waited almost an hour to get in and I was getting very fustrated with the wait because I am NOT a patient person and I find this very common with the workshops where we have to wait such a long time to actually start the workshop and this waiting is decreasing my motivation to even go to another workshop but thank god I only have one more to do. And also this whole workshop thing is so stupid. I don’t care if I have less time in class because I rather sit in class and talk rather than going to different places different days of the week to GET A STUPID SIGNATURE. god knows some kids don’t even go.. they forge the signature which I don’t really care for but I’m just saying if the point of workshops is for us to learn something our self… well A WORD TO FRESHMEN SEMINAR PEOPLE/TEACHERS/WHOEVER IS IN CHARGE it ain’t working. I even hear one of a peer mentor complaining how the workshop is not going anywhere. So yea I’m done. Have a nice day.

Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition Workshop

1) Title of Workshop: Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition

2) Enrichment Area Fulfilled: Arts at Baruch

3) Date/Time Attended: Novemeber 3/ 1pm to 2pm

4) How did the workshops affect your perspective of the topic that was discussed?

Well, I’m not really an art person to begin with but this workshop made me appreciate art and made me realize that a picture really is worth a thousand words. A picture can show what the artist is thinking/feeling while he/she paints the painting.

5) How did the workshop take you out of your comfort zone?

It didn’t really bring me out of my comfort zone. I’m just exposed to something new, something I haven’t really took the time to see or appreciate.

6) Explain what the workshop was about and tell us why you specifically chose that workshop.

This workshop is about the paintings of Mercedes Matter. Most of her paintings are abstract and still life. It’s very colorful and most of them are fill with fruits and the shape triangle – which I find it weird because I see triangle in like EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HER PAINTING. Is triangle like her favorite shape or something? I chose this workshop because it was a requirement for freshmen seminar class. And again I’m not an art person so I don’t think I would ever go to a gallery ever again.

Mediating Conflict and Resolving Disputes in Baruch.

1) Title of Workshop: Mediating Conflict and Resolving Disputes

2) Enrichment Area Fulfilled: Personal Enrichment

3) Date/Time Attended: Oct. 29, 09 / 12:30pm to 2:30pm

4) How did the workshops affect your perspective of the topic that was discussed?

Previously, I thought students will become more mature and independent, but after I attending this workshop, I found out that it is necessary to seek help when they are facing conflicts that they cannot mediate, because other people’s advises or actions might easily solve them. I also realize that everyone can play a role as an Ombudsman, who can help both our friends ourselves.

5) How did the workshop take you out of your comfort zone?

I admit I was in my comfort zone. In my college, there is no fighting, abusing, or discriminating. However, conflicts are inevitable, and this workshop forced me to face reality. I have bad grades, and I rather someone punching me in the face rather than getting a bad grade.

6) Explain what the workshop was about and tell us why you specifically chose that workshop.

The purpose of this workshop is to help the students to mediate their conflicts. We were divided into groups, and each group got a specific conflict to be solved. Unfortunately, laughing was the main part of my group and we couldn’t mediate any conflicts. Later, the professor explained to us when we were presenting in the class. Honestly, I attended this workshop because it was the requirement of my Freshmen Seminar. I had to attend this sooner or later. Personally, I also wanted to make more friends by attending this workshop.

3) Date/Time Attended: Oct. 29, 09 / 12:30pm to 2:30pm

4) How did the workshops affect your perspective of the topic that was discussed?

After attended the workshop, I realized there is a place that can help to settle conflicts in the school. The professional advisor, ombud, can help to settle and find solution for conflicts between professors and students or conflicts among the students. Personally, I think this department is important in the college campus because sometime conflicts can be happen easily as people gather together. Therefore, it is necessary to have professional people to help solve the issue before the issue gets expand.

5) How did the workshop take you out of your comfort zone?

This workshop makes me learn that I should not be afraid and feel alone when I have issues in the school. Even if I am not satisfied with the grade that I got from the class, I can go to ombud and ask for their advice. They might try to reach the professor if they also consider the professor gave unfair grade. The workshop takes me out of my comfort zone by showing that I should be brave to say what I want and there will have people to help.

6) Explain what the workshop was about and tell us why you specifically chose that workshop.

During the workshop, we were divided into groups and some students roles play the ombud and demonstrate how they settle issues when students reach them. The instructor also explains the function of ombuds and how the office operates. I chose this workshop because I think as a college student; I might have to deal with more issues which did not happened when I was in high school. For example, I have to overcome the massive amount of readings and the speed of the classes in college. Therefore, attend this workshop makes me realize I should not feel helpless whenever I have conflicts with others because I can always go to ombud and ask for help.
