personal enrichment workshop

1) Title of Workshop:

Mediating Conflict and Resolving Disputes at Baruch

2) Enrichment Area Fulfilled:

      Personal Enrichment

3) Date/Time Attended:

    29.10.2009  12:30pm to 1:30pm

4) How did the workshops affect your perspective of the topic that was discussed?

I understand we should be so negative or too opstic about our problems. We should think like an adult. Comlpaining is not the right way to solve problems in college. Professors have their guidelines and our friends have their own thoughts. In college, when problems are taking place, we should really taking every factors into account rather than only thinking about what you want.

5) How did the workshop take you out of your comfort zone?

Some students think they can go to freshman semiar office for any problems that happen to them, but actually, before doing so,we should talk the problems in person with who is directly relating. Then we can state the problems to adviser, so they can help us better. the workshop take you out of your comfort zone by telling me that we should always think about what we should do rather than complaining to freshman semiar right away.

6) Explain what the workshop was about and tell us why you specifically chose that workshop.

I chose this workshop because I wanna know more about how to communicate and dealing with people. Especially in college, it is normal for us to have conflict with no matter friends or prof.  because we’ve become matured and have our own ideas. When these conflicts come up, we should handle them well-preparedly.  Plus, I am really straight forwars and bad at dealing with problems. And I thought this workshop will help me with that.

Mediating Conflict and Resolving Disputes at Baruch College

1) Title of Workshop: Mediating Conflict and Resolving Disputes at Baruch College

2) Enrichment Area Fulfilled: Personal Enrichment

3) Date/Time Attended: October 29/ 12:30pm to 2:30pm

4) How did the workshops affect your perspective of the topic that was discussed?

This workshop affected my perspective of the topic by helping me to know how the process goes on when the conflicts between the students themselves or professors has been passed to the Mediation Office.

5) How did the workshop take you out of your comfort zone?

This workshop took me out of comfort zone by presenting me the common conflicts in college life and showing us the way to resolve these disputes. As we all know, conflicts between students and students, or the ones between students and professors, could happen any time and any where. You can’t just have a fight with them, because it violates the laws and college rules. The best resolving method is to report your problem to Mediation Officer, see if they could help you in some effective ways.

6) Explain what the workshop was about and tell us why you specifically chose that workshop.

This workshop helps me to know more about Baruch College. First, the instructor told us that there were couples of ways to resolve the conflicts, such as the conversation on the phone, and one-on-one interview. Then we had been divided into groups, the instructor would assign each group to a certain situation, so that we could practice how the process goes in Mediation Office. Instructor would give some suggestions or comments when groups presenting their own situations in front of the entire class. Anyway, the workshop was full of fun, and I was so glad to attend it!

Mediation Conflict 10/29

1) Title of the Workshop – Mediating Conflict and Resolving Disputes at Baruch

2) Enrichment Area Fulfilled – Personal Enrichment Workshop

3) Date/Time Attended – 10/29/09, from 12:30 p.m to 2:00 p.m.

4) How did the workshops affect your perspective of the topic that was discussed?

– Through this workshops, I realize being a fitting mediator is not an easy thing. I’m glad that I learned certain skill that are very useful in solving the conflict between people. Moreover, I realize that there’s a Ombuds office. Therefore, whenever I have conflict with any peers or professors, I could go there and meet the faculties, see if i could get any aid from them.

5) How did the workshop take you out of your comfort zone?

– In taking me out of my comfort zone, the instructor of the workshop actually presented us with some situation that really take place in Baruch, such as the conflict between professors and students. I think that was really helpful because I could actually know what the problem is addressed and how it becomes solved.

6) Explain what the workshop was about and tell us why you specifically chose that workshop.

– After not being able to attend the personal enrichment workshop last friday due to the cancellation of the workshop, I finally attended the workshop, “Mediation Conflict”, today. The reasons I chose this workshop ware that I needed signature for personal enrichment section, and I wanted to know what this workshop is about. On glancing over the room of the workshop, I thought it should be a little bit bigger because some peers had no choice but to sit on the floor. We all were divided in groups, and, apparently, each group was assigned to a certain situation even through most of the situations were related to the conflict between professors and students. The purpose of this activity was to guide us to be a fitting mediatior whose job is to try his/her best to solve the issues between people. Throughout this activity, the mood was fine. The members of each group chose what role they wanted to be, and then they started acting out the situation they were assigned to. The instructor would ask them to pause and give them suggestions of what they should say. Perhaps the workshop was quite short; not all the groups had the chance to present their situation. Overall, this workshop was worth one hour.

Freshman Seminar Assignment due Nov. 10th

Hi Everyone!

I hope that this e-mail is finds you doing well, especially since most of your mid-terms should be over.  I know some of you are concerned with the next assignment.  The purpose of this assignment is not to cause fear or stress but to have you become more engaged with Baruch College and to learn about the different venues and opportunities Baruch has to offer, hence that is the purpose of the Freshman Seminar class.

I asked everyone to pick a different Department/Office/Program so that each of you could become knowledgeable about a specific area of student services.  The fact that the paper should be five (5) pages is of little importance, the focus should be on the information you gather and learn by researching the specific area you chose. [ P.S.   now that you are college students, a 5 page paper is quite minimal, before you realize it, Professors will be asking for 12-15 page papers…get used to it ;)!]

What I am looking for from this project is that you will research the area you have chosen, , by conducting interviews of the staff, and or students that benefit from the department. I want to know what you learned about the area, what the purpose or mission is, whom do they serve, why is this office/dept./prog.  important for the Baruch community, staff, students, etc.

As always do not hestiate to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Good Luck and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Finally get to post!!

My blog issue is finally solved, and I finally get to share my words with you guys. Thank God! Midterms are finally over, and I’m quite satisfied with my grades so far. However, I have tons of works on hand, especially the two interviews, one is for anthropology, the another one is, of course, for freshmen seminar class. After reading the blogs that are posted by others, I also want to make a little piece of comment about the workshop on last friday. In the morning of last friday, I already dressed up, preparing to go to the personal enrichment workshop, but all of a sudden Ben gave me a call, telling me that the workshop was canceled. I was shocked and disappointed. I planned to work out after attending the workshop, but sadly, I had to stay home on that day. Anyway, I’m looking forward to voluntering for the ING New York City Marathon 2009 on friday. Lastly, I want to thank Michelle for helping me to solve my blog issue.

personal enrichment workshop 10/23 -PROBLEMS

I looked on the schedule for the workshops 4 days ago and it was one for personal enrichment scheduled on 10/23 at 2:30 in room 5-150 VC. On the 23 I went to school, other colleagues came to, and went we checked the schedule on the blog and it was erased, just like that.. . so a couple of days before was there and in the day of the workshop it was erased….how are we suppose to fulfill our requirements if they change the schedule so often? I went at school Friday only for this workshop because I have no classes on Friday,   I just lost half of day in which I could have study for a midterm…..But again maybe our time is not that important for the people how organize these events. This is the second time in this semester when I experience this problem…
