Database survival at the library

1) Title of Workshop: Database survival at the library

2) Enrichment Area Fulfilled: Academic Enrichment

3) Date/Time Attended: October 15/ 12:45pm to 1:15pm

4) How did the workshops affect your perspective of the topic that was discussed?

The Database Survival workshop affected my perspective of the topic by helping me to discover that there was an easier way for researching information on the database website in Baruch College Library. I believe that will be a really useful tool in helping me write papers for classes in the future. Database is not only for writing assignments, but it also runs throughout any other areas.

5) How did the workshop take you out of your comfort zone?

I used to go to library directly to do the research, however, it cost so much time, and mostly it failed to find the right book that I want. This workshop took me out of my comfort zone by presenting me the easier way to find specific material that I am looking for, and brings me deeply to the point. It saves time, saves money!!!

6) Explain what the workshop was about and tell us why you specifically chose that workshop.

Honestly, I chose this workshop because of my friends. The reason we decided to go there is to believe Database could provide us the ways to know more about Baruch.  The representative in the workshop showed the steps to research information using Database. And he also told us how different buttons and colors of the words work in this modern electronic system. In fact, this workshop helped me a lot in many ways, and I was so glad to attend it!

Thank you!

The Changing Nature of Race, Power and Ethnicity in the era of Obama and Sotomayor

Community-Global awareness

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009    4:00 – 5:30 PM  VC 14-270

With paticipating this discussion, I had learned lots of specific phenomena about the racism that still appear in our day-to-day life, even in our school, which is the most diversed compus around the nation. I learned to view myself more objectively about the actions I took before during this semester with consideration of the racism. Such as when I  went into my class, the first thing I would done is to see what kind of group of people sit in the class room, Whites, Blacks, Asians,or Hispenics, and I would rather to have a seat with Asians.

The imformation about the shift of the population of the United States really took me out of my confort zone. It shone that the population of whites will fall from 67% in 2005 to 49% in 2050, the white population will become the minority not the majority. Also, the population of Hispenics will increase to 29% by 2050. This is amazing!!!

The reason why I chose this workshop was because I wanted to know how would they describe the changes of roles of the African Americans and Hispenics politically and socially in the era of Obama and Sotomayor, and I was also wishing to see would they talk about the situations of Chinese in our society.

Anyway, that was a great workshop!!

Thank you

Sample: Blogging on the Workshop

Hello to all:

This is a sample of the required format of posting the blogs. This is  a blog of one of the workshops I attended this week. Remember that just showing up to a workshop and getting your passports signed does not complete the assignment. Part A includes Attending and Part B includes Blogging.

1) Title of Workshop: Bearcat-The Other Google

2) Enrichment Area Fulfilled: Academic Enrichment

3) Date/Time Attended: October 20/ 1:30pm to 2:30pm

4) How did the workshops affect your perspective of the topic that was discussed?

This workshop affected my perspective of the topic by helping me to discover that there were more ways of searching for research materials than just using Google and Yahoo! to find credible sources. There was information that will be useful in helping me write papers for each of my classes, since the demographics of searching on Bearcat has such a wide variety. The information given was very clear and was understandable in how it was presented to the audience.  I am sure that I will be using Bearcat for my upcoming research assignments.

5) How did the workshop take you out of your comfort zone?

This workshop took me out of my comfort zone by presenting me information that I had no prior knowledge about. Since I usually use the traditional Ask Jeeves and Google search engines, being introduced to Bearcat helped me to narrow down the information I was looking for into a more specific area.

6) Explain what the workshop was about and tell us why you specifically chose that workshop.

First off I chose this workshop so I can be exposed to what the Bearcat database has to offer. This workshop was a guide to help the students find ways on how the database can provide all types of information for researching information.

In order for your blog to be counted, you have a week from the attendance of that workshop to blog about it. Blogging any time after the seven days the blog will not be counted and you must attend another workshop. For example, if you attend a workshop on  November 4, you have until November 11 to blog about the workshop.

Any other questions you may address to me or to your advisor, Helene Brown.

Your Mentor,

Michelle

Freshmen Seminar Assignments

I have a question.

I thought that at the beginning of this seminar we were told that we wouldn’t have any homework or assignment for this seminar course? I thought that the objective of these sessions were to keep track of our adaptability to the school environment and to college life, and not to add on to our work load? I’m actually very stressed out by this assignment, seriously.

I mean, you might think I am exaggerating but it’s a fine line between what’s a lot and what’s too much.

A single droplet from the tap would be deem as too much if it was to be added to a cup of water that’s filled up to the brim.

midterm week

It is the first midterm week during my college life. School library opens 24 hours during this week. Is it necessary to do so? My answer is no. it’s unbelievable that students could stay there and study hard in the whole night. In my psychology class, I learn how sleeping is important to us. Sleep supports 3 major restorative processes: neural growth, memory consolidation, and protection against cellular damage. A good night’s sleep before an exam may do more for your performance than an all-night cram session. Good luck everybody!

I went to the workshop yesterday, and it was about managing relationship in college. The workshop was lively, because the professor offered some activities to meet new freshmen. And same as Rachael, I learned a new website, linkedit.com, which is adult version of facebook. Anyway, it was cool experience and I enjoyed a lot yesterday.^ ^
