Community\ Global Awareness

The workshop i went to yesterday was a lecture series spoken by Profesor Rob Smith. His lecture ws called ” Horatio Alger Lives in Brooklyn…But Check His Papers” and it was about  immigrnts coming to the U.S and having thier paper checked properly. The lecture was okay and Smith threw.  in a few jokes from time to time to keep our attention. Overall the workshop was interesting learning about what he thought about the immigrants.

mediating conflict?

while i have the time i’ll mention the personal enrichment workshop that i missed the other day. not missed as in didn’t attend. it was about mediating conflict…and there sure were many conflicts. the room was definitely overbooked. students who had registered for the workshop were being turned down because seats were already filled by other students (who hadn’t registered). the workshop was conducted in a small room on the third floor and i had the joy of sitting on the floor for the duration. being that i was uncomfortable and…about to create more conflict, i dind’t find the workshop very useful in educating me. most of the students gave personal conflicts they had in relationships. as much as i’d love to listen to those, i rushed out the door when it was over.

resume writing

the resume writing workshop was very resourceful and helpful. not only did they explain the servies of the STARR center, they also went through every piece that gets put into a resume. it helped me out in finding out what i needed to include as well as exclude on my future resume. it seems that i have alot of clubs to join and alot of activities to pick up. but even if you struggle they can work with your resume and give corrections as well as correct personal interviews. all in all its a great center that delivered a great workshop.

coffee house

I went to a coffee house workshop, it was good it got me really interested in the club that was holding the coffee house. I learned about trafficing and how it exists, the public speaker was really good and inspiring. Next saturday I am hoping to do a feed 500, hopefully I will be able to make it, well see.

Club Fair

I attended the Club Fair in the gym (better late a late blog then none at all) and was taken back by the massive amount of students.  The clubs touched on all aspects of college life, from nationality to hobbies to the classes we are taking.  Each club having it’s own little table was cute, almost like the college fairs I went to in the past, except so much more enjoyable.  I sort of wish I had more free time to join one.

Resume Writing (Career Exploration)

This resume writing session was very helpful. I found out that resumes are supposed to be updated based on your educational life and most recent works. I never knew you were supposed to remove all previous works as soon as you enter college; this makes things more challenging now that I have “no” work experience. This workshop was basically an overview of a resume and an advertisement for STARR. I thought this was a decent workshop, however it was relatively long and lots of students around me were falling asleep (too many technical problems, should be better prepared for the future)

Mediating Conflicts

On November 12, 2009, I attended a workshop, which named “Mediating Conflicts and resolving disputes at Baruch College”, in the room 3-190 of the NVC Building.  Having the speaker presented the information of how conflicts started, and how they resolved eventually, I felt like I was incapable of handling the disputes in the real society yet.  Knowing that the society fulfilled with tricky and malicious attempts, and it could not be possible for people with naïve human natures to survive under such pressured competitions, it was extremely important for me to learn how to balance between trust and distrust and how to avoid occurrences of conflicts by fixing my interpersonal relationship.  The instructor of this workshop also taught us about the lessons of behaviorism and psychology in determining the difference of personalities, which possessed by different kinds of people, so that contradictions would not be occurred easily among people.  Overall I highly recommend this workshop to all the people.  Not only because it taught students how to solve the problem of personal conflicts, but also because it enabled students to build more connections, like making friends, to the outside world and to experience the operation of the real society.

Immigration lecture

Today was extremely interesting. i got the chance to listen to a professor speak about his 23 year long project in which he is conducting a study of mexican immigrants and writing a book on his findings. I must say that everything professor smith spoke about interested me and was all completely new information as opposed to many of the other workshops which i found generally useless. I will definitely following up on this workshop and trying to keep in touch with this professor.
