Today I attended the Mercedes Matter at Arts center on 22nd st. It was not inciteful for me and seemed pointless. I understand that may be very inspiring and entertainting for others but for me it felt like a waste of time. However, the art was very beautiful and colorful. Colors caught my eye and some painting even brought images to mind that started conversations between my friends and I.
Ethics Workshop
I attended this global awareness workshop a while ago, but I forgot to blog about it. One thing I remember during this workshop was that the presenter was speaking about plagiarism for an extended period of time. It made me realize that original work was very important and that it is very likely that people may have forgotten to include their sources and be accused of plagiarism. It isn’t something that is only illegal, but it was also unethical. This workshop was primarily about ethics and I came out of not only knowing that ethics played a very important role in society, but I realized that ethics can also help improve someone’s personality.
Academic Enrichment Workshop
Well for starters, the one thing that bothered me the most during this workshop was that the presenters were speaking about the COM1010 classes and how they were very useful; it helped them improve their speech and allowed them to give thorough and concise presentations. However, this was obviously not the case because if I were to count the number of “ums” and “likes” that they said during the presentation, it would count for a certain percentage of their speech. Putting that aside, this workshop was informative. It basically gave an overview of what classes we should take next semester and was a guide of the class selection process.
I think that the outline of the workshop was well prepared, in the fact that they had an introduction that included everyone in the audience, the body of the work which was basically all the information, and the conclusion which was to allow us to contact them if we needed further assistance.
Mediating Conflict
Aside from the fact that the workshop was packed, I have to admit that it was a decent experience. The adviser basically told us what to do in a situation where there is a conflict that would normally be ignored. It is best if we consult the person that is causing the conflict and fix the problem immediately.
I think to improve this workshop, they should get more seats and rooms for the students because that was basically the major problem in the room. It was very uncomfortable, but other than that, I would say that this workshop went by pretty smoothly.
Personal Enrichment Workshop
On November 12 at 12:30 p.m., I attended a personal enrichment workshop called conflict resolution. During the workshop, we gathered in a small room and had a class discussion regarding conflicts and ways to solve these conflicts. Students would volunteer to share their personal stories on how they dealt with conflicts. One of the main conflicts discussed during this workshop was school issues such as elevators and office problems. Students have trouble using the elevators especially when these elevators are too crowded. We discussed ways to solve this issue by maybe letting the escalators work or by protesting to the staff members at Baruch College. Through this experience, I learned many important techniques in solving conflicts. Thinking of the possibilities in solving this conflict by talking to someone about this issue can be a solution. I would recommend this workshop to other students because it was very helpful in dealing with conflicts that I might encounter within my college years.
Random
Hey guys.
We’ve been in the same FRO class for quite some time now and I glanced at the posts and they’re all about workshops or questions about school. I think since part of this class was to meet others and start some relationships we should do that. I want to dedicate this post to anything that’s on your minds at the time you see it.
Have you guys been doing anything interesting outside of school that’s appropriate to talk about?
What do you do during your club hours?
Anything that’s not school…
Play the Basics: Communicating your way to the top
Last Wednesday (Nov. 4) me and couple colleagues went to check out a small workshop located inside the Office of Academic Advisement. Once we settled down, three female peer advisors greeted us and introduced themselves, and made us do the same but with an icebreaker game. Icebreaker game, I must admit, was pretty clever. We had to use three words from a provided list and connect them while it applies to us.
Throughout the workshop, we were taught about many of the resources available to us and a little background about various tier I courses that would help guide us a little in our future classes and registration. They described to us what these courses did for them and how it would help us academically and personally while fulfilling graduation requirements.
Overall I thought this workshop was decent, but not quite what I was expecting as to what the title of the workshop was saying. I thought this workshop would give us strategies in connection to the top through the power of communication but, it seemed more like a little guideline to tier I classes as well as the subject of communications. Therefore, I did not find this workshop too useful but I did get to hear about Degree works as well as a recall of other resources such as the benefits of Team Baruch, a personal test for undecided majors from the STARR Career Developement Center, and so forth. I guess in a way this workshop did pay off at the end.
Library Tour
On September, 2009, my Freshman Seminar class had a library tour. In this library tour, I learned so many new things, such as the collections of magazines, journals, and reference books, the place where computers were put, and the circulation desk for borrowing and returning materials. The Newman Library, as locates on the second floor, has a huge collection of reference books that arrange from A to Z. Besides the collection of reference books on the second floor, there are also so many magazines and journals on the third floor to let students and professors to read. In addition to that, if students have difficulties on doing their homework or having problems for the exams, they can go to ask the reference desk on the second floor. Furthermore, the second floor has a Circulation Reserve, which allows students to borrow their books or study tools, for example: CDs and clickers. The most interesting thing in this library, I think, is that students can borrow laptops on the third floor of Newman library. And also I like the fourth floor, where is so tranquil and comfortable for me to study. Overall this library tour has provided me with incredibly good learning place and experience
Club Fair
The club fair, as held in the Main Gym on September 24, introduced students to lives of various clubs in the Baruch College. In this club fair, there were a lot of clubs, including the Bio-Med Society, Baruch City Advertising Society, Colleges against Cancer, Finance & Economics Society, Actuarial Science Society, NY Music Industry Association, and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, that I had never seen before. Among these clubs, the clubs of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program and Actuarial Science Society were the most interesting and attractive ones to me. The VITA program, as stated in its title, was mainly dealt with income tax. It enabled students to have new insights of how the world of accounting progress. Also, it granted opportunities to students to experience the real taste of filing income tax. In addition to the VITA Program, the Actuarial Science Society served as my assistant in obtaining my future goal of career. I believed as I received help from the Actuarial Science Society,my comprehension of the responsibility of an Actuary and the essence of having Actuarial Science in the business world would strenthen.
Database Survival
On October 15, 2009, I had attended a workshop of Academic Enrichment, which called the Database survival, at the Newman Library. This workshop, in general, taught students the essence of applying database in the field of business and science. As the instructor of this workshop pointed out the key role that database played in operating business, he also gave out a brief meaning of database, which stated that database stimulated the rate of efficiency on computers in organizing and doing research on data information. Since my intended major was about business or finance, I was eager to select this workshop, for I realized that this workshop would provided me with tremendous learning in new materials, like numerical analysis, database design, and finance flow out and flow in. Possessing all these important contributions to countless kinds of working fields, I would highly recommend this workshop for all students. It, indeed, introduced students to the beginning of business operation, and expanded their horizons of the interdependent relationship between database and the business world.
