On October 13, 2009, I followed my friend to a Gallery tour in the Sidney Mishkin building. It was my first time to visit Gallery, in fact. Feeling curious about the display, I accelerated my walking rate to the gallery to observe the paintings. The themes of the display were about the Nature of Landscape and the Nature of Photography, and each of these themes contained a series of paintings by different artists. In one instance, Tom Baril, who was a graduate student of New York’s School of Visual Arts in 1980, has been achieved predominant accomplishment of photography. His genius of studing urban architecture, still life and minimalist seascapes enabled him to hold display in countless publications and collections. In addition to Tom Baril, Erica Lennard also was the one who contributed largely to the photographic field. Among photographers of gardens working, Erica Lennard was considered as the one of the most talented ones. The gardens, which had become the subjects of her photography, owned different kinds of exotic style and vivid structure. The majestic formal gardens of Europe and Zen Gardens of Japan, for example. Each of them, perhaps, shared same kind of flowers and plants, but because of the cultural difference, the cultivation, the arrangement, and the meaning of garden were distinct between them. Pursuing the nature of beauty, Erica Lennard decided to do a re-interpretation of the gardens’ beauties, which eventually enabled her to become a fashion photographer. Conclusively the workshop of Gallery tour had expanded my view of the field of photography. Also I understood that the world needed photography to photograph its beauty.
Workshops
besides goin to the studnet life club fair workshop wayyyyyyy back. i went to the academic enrichment workshop that was held on wednesday at 1:00. only a couple of people from the group were there tho -__-. Nick was there too. The workshop explained to us the importance of the academic advisement center located on the 5th floor of the NVC. they basically help you with anything related to your academic career. if they can’t assist you, they can surely lead you to another place that can. we started the workshop by doing a funny, yet complicated ice breaker. even nick had to do it…which was funny. i look forward to learning more about Baruch by attending more workshops. if you still haven’t completed one…there not that bad. If theres only a handful of people it doesn’t even last that long and they get right to the point.
Communicating your way to the top
So i attended this workshop with a few others and nick (who turned out to the the star of the workshop). This workshop was interesting, but also very uniformative. i thought that all it did was restate very simmilar ideas that we have been told on many accounts already and that we already have full knowledge of. I did learn a few things about who to go for and what they do but i would say a good ninety percent of the workshop was all material we covered in freshman seminar class periods or in handouts.
internship and goal setting workshop
apart from the fact that this workshop was too long and this lady wanted to keep us there for ten years like this is kindergarten! i have a life people any way i still managed to learn that getting internships gives you an edge in the job market and baruch’s starr center helps you with getting internships.
Light the Night Walk
On Saturday, October 17, 2009, I volunteered with a bunch of friends at one of the Light the Night Walk at Forest Park. The walk was for the cause of leukemia and lymphoma, which are among the life threatening illnesses out there. I wasn’t expect the volunteering to much fun at all, however, it turned out to be better than what I had expected. We started off not doing much except blow up balloons. When the participants actually came around 5 pm, it got much more crazy and busy. Our job was to hand out the balloons with the lights to the participants. While we were handing out balloons, the rest of the volunteers and my friends made it lively and fun with their stupidity and their bad singing. At the end of the long, tiring day, the best part was the free food that I’ve waited all day for.
Library Workshop
On Thursday, October 15, I attended the library workshop. I learned several important techniques during this workshop session. I first learned how to narrow my search when looking up certain topics using google. I also learned how to use google advanced search in order to gain database information. I realized that this workshop session will allow me to use the information that I learned in order to write my upcoming research paper. I highly recommend this workshop to those students who want to hone their research skills.
Management & Relationships
Last week, I attended the Managing Relationships in College workshop. Basically the speaker discussed about a variety of relationships, such as romantic, friendships, family, and professional. Using her psychology background, she addressed to us how important it is to develop these relationships throughout college. In addition, she stated that by developing these relationships, you will be much more successful in the future. She had us form groups to discuss how to manage these different types of relationships along with school. We, also, were forced to walk around the room to make several new friends and learn something about them. Overall, I felt this workshop helped me adapt to a better college life.
Gallery Tour
So i was very curious to see that baruch had its own art gallery. I headed over to the 22nd street entrance and lined up for the gallery tour. I was quite dissapointed when i was inside. I thought it would be much larger than it actually was. However it was still a very nice facility. Our tour guide was very nice and was very accomodation as well as filled with knowledge of the whole gallery and how it works. I think i will be visiting back very soon.
Student Services Fair
So today i had the pleasure of atteneding the student services affair. i was sad to sya it was very crowded in such a small room that it was hard to gather information. However there was many great facilities there yielding tons of information. I was able to find out about the baruch honnors college which i was very intrested in and realized i will most likely be applying for. I wish that next time they could make it in a more open area or split it into two events so that it would be easier to have time to speak to each facility.
workshop today
probably the best workshop iv been to so far- had booths set up in with representatives from most departments answering any questions i finally got answers i needed regarding financial aid
