Personal Enrichment workshop: Mediating Conflict and Resolve

Event: Mediating Conflict and Resolve (Personal Enrichment)
Date: Nov. 12, 2009
Time: 12:30-2:30
Place: VC 3-190

Luckily, I came around 15 minutes earlier. By 12:30, the room was full and they kicked people out. This workshop raises problems and made me think more about them. Do we ignore conflicts or do we confront them? Most people ignore them because they scared it might change status quota or destroy relationships. However, the conflicts eventually builds up and it will snowball or burst. Therefore, it is better to confront them before it get any worst. Mediation is open communication between two parties. People should resolve conflicts by one to one communication. If that doesn’t work, a third party should step in and try to resolve it. Baruch has mediators to help with problems.
The workshop was overall enjoyable. The instructor kept the crowd entertain. She was talking about conflicts within the school, such as people going in the wrong way to enter elevators. A student named, Karl, present the workshops as a problem as a joke at first. But the instructor gave him the job to talk to the workshop coordinators about the conflicts (no more academic workshops, overcrowding, and signing up). She emphasized on the power of voice along with justifications and reasons.
