Freshman Seminar @ Baruch College

Academic Enrichment Workshop

I attended a library workshop and it was extremely helpful because I learned so many things I could do at the library that I did not know before. One of the librarians at Baruch explained where the computer lab was and where I could print out papers using my $100 credits. I did not know where the copying machines until I attended this workshop. I found the online library very useful too because I can borrow books from other CUNY schools. After attending this workshop, I know how to contact a librarian if I need help. This workshop was very helpful and I would recommend everyone to attend if they do not know much about the library. Overall, this was a very good workshop experience.

Freshmen Seminar Reception

I attended this workshop hoping to get an understanding of what a freshmen need to do in Baruch. When I arrived to the reception, there were crowds of freshmen everywhere at different corners of the floor. One of the organizers of the workshop tried to control the crowd but she was unsuccessful because she knew all the freshmen needed to get their books sign. I received the freshmen seminar package which included the three different tiers and what basic courses that all the students need to take in order to graduate Baruch. I wish this workshop wasn’t as crowded so I could grasp a little bit of what was going on. Overall, this workshop was good and could have been better.

Art Gallery Tour

The art gallery tour was very interesting but very crowded at the same time. It was difficult to see the art works and the paintings because of the over crowd. I manage to see some art works and some were very confusing and hard to understand because I could figure out what the artist wanted to portray. There were just too many freshmen in this tour. The crowd level needs to be controlled a little more. I did not enjoy this art gallery tour workshop as much as my other workshops. If there were less people, I would probably enjoyed it more.

Personal Enrichment Workshop

I attended a Personal Enrichment OMBUD. It was very informative and helpful. My first impression when I arrived to the workshop was overcrowded. This room was filled with freshmen who were trying to full fill their requirements and it was hard to find a seat. When I finally got settle down, some one from OMBUD came and introduced what OMBUD. It is a place where Baruch students can discuss their feelings and experiences at Baruch. The people said it is the ideal place for students to go to when they have problems about their grades, professors, classes, etc and wants help. I did not know that OMBUD existed until I attended the workshop. Now I know where to go if I have any problems with Baruch.

Mediating and resolving conflict workshop

On November 12 at 12:30 I attended the workshop on mediating and resolving conflict.  This workshop wasn’t to bad.  It got straight to the point and didn’t take up too much time.  Even though, according to the schedule, it was supposed to end at 2:30 we finished at 1:30.  Most of the workshop was spent just joking around about different conflicts such as one between a couple that one person volunteered to share.  If this workshop repeats then I definitely recommend people go to it.  It is an easy way to fulfill one of the workshop categories without wasting too much time like most other workshops.

Art Gallery workshop

I went to the art gallery at Baruch.  The featured artist was Mercedes Matter.  To be quite honest from what I was able to see I wasn’t to pleased with her work.  She is considered a modern artist and I am not a fan of modern art.  Some modern art might be ok but personally when I look at a painting I like to know exactly what Im looking at.  I don’t want to have to search for a table leg like I had to when looking at some of the work of Mercedes Matter.

Resume Workshop

I attended the resume workshop not so long ago with Morris, it was pretty useful, and pretty well presented. One for the better workshops i have been to, the advice is good, and they didn’t yell at us for being late. Also we learned a lot about improving or making career plans and utilizing the Starr center.

art gallery

The art gallery was a very entertaining tour i especially enjoyed the modern pieces. Definitely the most enjoyable of workshops i have been to so far. However enjoyable the tour was the wait was not, especially with about 40 people crammed into one side of a lobby. But it was well worth it in my opinion.

..Long Time Ago…

I attended my final workshop on the October 22. That is correct, it took me a month to finally blog about the Career Planning workshop. I felt that this was probably the most informative workshop that I had attended. The speaker spoke with an emphasis on the importance of applying for internships. She also talked about the proper procedures to significantly help your chances of getting an internship. They handed out a booklet that contained most of what the speaker talked about. I’m pretty they have more copies of these booklets at the STARR Career Development Center. Overall, the workshop was very informative, but it felt like I was in a lecture hall.

Job Fair Preparation

Event: Job Fair Preparation
Date and time:  Nov 19,2009 12:30-2:30
Place: VC 1-107

I find this job fair to be helpful. There are two presenters from Verizon talking about networking and interview skills. They mostly emphasized on networking since people might know other employer that might want to hire you. They also discussed on how to sell yourself to other people and leave a good impression, such the 30 second elevator speech.
