(Arts) Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective

Event:  Arts at Baruch: Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective
Date and Time: Nov 17, 2009 1:00-2:00
Place: 135 East 22 Street

It took awhile to find the location and upon entering, there is a huge line about 30+ people. The workshop coordinators let a small group about 15-20 people in at once. I was surprised at the small collection of artworks they have. Mercedes, whose artworks were shown, is a modern artist. Modern artists paint abstractly about everything life. There is no need to paint accurately, since there is cameras. Her collection is consist of still life, especially tabletops. Her masterpiece is Tabletop Still Life. It has many triangles that overlaps to create the painting. I was amazed at how she used colors to create objects without using lines to outline them in her pictures.

Art Gallery: Mercedes Matter

This workshop was rather short and I spent most of the time waiting to get in than in the gallery. However, the works from Mercedes Matter seemed quite interesting to me, especially as her pieces grew more mature. The most interesting thing was that her works can be sold for about $80,000 each, yet they were still not considered that “famous.” I liked that the whole event was organized in that the setup of the gallery was chronological starting from her works as a child till her last work before she died. The comparison was really evident in the difference and we also talked a bit about the loss of creativity as one grows up into an adult. The way that she expressed herself through art and the way that she saw things was more imaginative and as she grew older, she started to draw more realistic and concrete things. Personally, I thought that her best works were during her later times when she had the more abstract perspective of things. It invoked a curiosity in me and made me stare at it longer and wonder about what she wanted to portray. Overall, this workshop was decent and helped to get my last workshop over with, although I did forget to bring my planner for the signature. Luckily, Paul was on of the peer mentors there and he told me he would sign it later on. Thank god..

Last Workshop Done!!

Forgot to post this the day of, but i went to my final workshop; Your Life Your Money, it was about college students dealing with things liek student loans and how debt is bad. Basically anything you can learn in any business 101 class. i was glad that it was hte last workshop and didnt really learn any new information and i thought the “pro-union” stuff was aggravating since i am fundamentally against unions. But im sure that sentence will cause an uproar since all educational venues are run by democrats and msot of its teachers/staff are democrats as well. i withdraw that statement. to sum up these workshops were a waste of time but im glad im done with them

This workshop was pretty fast. it only took like 15 minutes for the actual workshop. all we did was walk around and listen to the lady talk about the paintings. but waiting to go inside was long, probably waited for 30-40 minutes. well, its because of we had to go inside group by group, not all at once. but only like 16 people can go in at once, and there were alot of people waiting online. maybe i should’ve went on line earlier.

This workshop was shorter than it said. This workshop was first come first serve.so i went to the workshop early to get myself a spot and i did. even though it can fit certain amount of people, people just kept coming in. it was up to the point that a lot of people were sitting on the floor, im happy that i got myself a chair. i guess its because it was the last personal enrichment workshop, so those who didnt get it done want to finish it. but a lot of people didnt get to go in. It was pretty ok, the lady asked us some questions, and some of us shared their own experiences. some of them were funny. but overall, the owrkshop was pretty ok.

This workshop was very long. the lady explained what to do and not to do at a interview. Also, she showed us what we should wear and how to do a proper handshake. and then, she had us paired up with another person and have a short inerview with each other. This workshop is somewaht helpful to me. i had jobs and interviews, but not like the professional ones. so this will be helpful for my later on jobs. so i will know what to expect from a interview and prepare myself.

i wanted to go to the club fair because it counts as a workshop and i wanted to see what clubs are there. i might want to join a club. but the same thing happened. there was a huge crowd again. i hate to wait on line, but cant help it, so o well. there was a lot of clubs there, but not every club was there. it was fun to see the clubs, but dont know if i want to join a club or not, and i do, i dont know which one i wanna join.

Freshman Reception , 1st workshop

Title: Freshman Reception in the Center for Academic Advisement
When: Thu Sep 17 12:30pm – Thu Sep 17 2:30pm
Where: VC 5-215

This is the very first workshop i went to. As soon as i got there, it was already a big crowd on the 5th floor.i was waiting on line for a very long time. i guess its because everyone want to get a head start with their workshops. i did too, but i never thought it would be this crowed and everyone wanted to get in. so i was very frustrated. but at the end i managed to get through the workshop, since it wasnt that long.

Last Workshop!

Yes!!!! Finally my last workshop for freshman seminar. This was a career development workshop and it focused on internships. It was actually very informative and helpful information. It felt very long and boring at times, but this was a workshop that I’ve learned the most from. It will help me when I need to start applying to internships. I actually feel like i have a better understanding on the steps needed to start looking into different internships.

Gallery Tour

Today I went to the Art Gallery at Baruch. It was very interesting. I learned a lot about some artist which I never heard of before. Her art gave me hope that I could become an artist. I went in. I walked in a circle. I got my book signed. I left.
