Gallery Tour

Almost done, this is my fifth workshop and it falls under Arts at Baruch. The wait was much more longer than the actual gallery tour. I got to Mishkin at 1 pm and had to wait a little more than a half and hour to get in. It took so long because the tour was in groups. When I finally entered the gallery, my group walked around looking at the work of Mercedes Matter. The tour guide was very informative but the art work did not really catch my interest. Maybe the long wait just made me wish i was done with the tour as soon as possible.

6 for 6 moneyyy!!!!

Finally i finished all 6 of the workshops. Today i attended the resume uilding wokshop. It was very helpful and informative. I visited the star center right after since they had a resume building workshop there. I learnt a lot today about resumes, but more importantly finished the mandatory 6 WORKSHOPS. TGIF (THANK GOD I FINISHED)

Last fro we spoke about making our schedule. I liked Pauls idea, when making your schedule you print out all the classes you want to take so you can pick a different one if the one you originally wanted is taken. Most of the classes I am going to want to take are going to be taken since the freshman are dead last to registering for classes, November 24th. This sucks hopefully everything will work out.

Academic Advisement

Earlier in the term, I attended an academic advisement workshop on the 5th floor of the Vertical Campus. It was packed. At least 750 students attended and one of the lead advisors stated, “We didn’t expect this sort of turnout.” A few advisors were seated at tables attempting to advise, but it was so crowded and loud. Thankfully, I made it into the office where and advisor said we needed to introduce ourselves to one person before they signed our planners. Unfortunatley, my registration date is next week and I need to start looking at classes I need to take next semester.

Your Life, Your Money

The workshop showed a pilot for a PBS show designed to educate young adults about personal finance. I liked how they had a lot of food out for us to drink. I was surprised when I saw that the show was hosted by Turk from Scrubs. I heard most of the information that was in the presentation before though. I don’t really need to be told that debt is bad. The way that they used real people’s lives to demonstrate the importance of finance was more engaging than if they just threw information at us. The most informative was the MTA construction worker. Her story demonstrated how government programs and unions can be used to help yourself out financially.  I didn’t feel that the Q&A was necessary. Most of the answers they gave were just information restated from the show. I’ll be looking to see if the show was picked up by PBS.

Basic Interviewing

I went to a workshop last Thursday about the fundamental aspects of interviewing. The speaker, from the Career Developement Center, was a former human resources director for a company and her main duty was to interview thousands of canidates for a few positions. The workshop was very informative and I learned some things about dressing which I didn’t know. For example, the speaker stated that men should not wear black suits because it appears as if they are attending a funeral. Men should also not wear cologne, but women can wear light perfume.

Personal Enrichment workshop: Mediating Conflict and Resolve

Event: Mediating Conflict and Resolve (Personal Enrichment)
Date: Nov. 12, 2009
Time: 12:30-2:30
Place: VC 3-190

Luckily, I came around 15 minutes earlier. By 12:30, the room was full and they kicked people out. This workshop raises problems and made me think more about them. Do we ignore conflicts or do we confront them? Most people ignore them because they scared it might change status quota or destroy relationships. However, the conflicts eventually builds up and it will snowball or burst. Therefore, it is better to confront them before it get any worst. Mediation is open communication between two parties. People should resolve conflicts by one to one communication. If that doesn’t work, a third party should step in and try to resolve it. Baruch has mediators to help with problems.
The workshop was overall enjoyable. The instructor kept the crowd entertain. She was talking about conflicts within the school, such as people going in the wrong way to enter elevators. A student named, Karl, present the workshops as a problem as a joke at first. But the instructor gave him the job to talk to the workshop coordinators about the conflicts (no more academic workshops, overcrowding, and signing up). She emphasized on the power of voice along with justifications and reasons.

Fro, (registering for class)

So, my registration date for class was today because i have athlete early registration. But unfortunately they stopped me from registering because they say my immunization requirement has not yet been fulfilled, despite giving in my forms a good 2 weeks ago. So pretty upset about that, since i spent so much time picking out my classes and the registrar office doesn’t open till monday.

Global awareness workshop

Went to the global awareness workshop yesterday. It was a pretty nice event, had an interesting speaker. He talked to us about how his career experience was like as an openly gay man. Found his perspective to be very intersting and the workshop overall to be a worthwile event. Definetely glad I went, especially since there was free food.

World affairs / community service.

I have a phobia. It is called  Anatidaephobia…. this means that i am in constant fear of being watched by ducks. I have another fobia. it is called FEAR OF NEEDLES FOR VARIOUS REASONS-OBIA. i don’t do needles. Nothing personal, but it might be my bullet proof skin, but me and needles don’t get along. for my community service workshop i eneded up volunteering in the senior center near my house. i have gotten the required hours already…but something interesting happened. I liked it there. I’m going back there tomorrow to volunteer from the goodness of my heart. Ohh gosh what am I saying…I’ve gone soft…I think that it is a good way for me to give back to my neighbor hood. Aside it looking good on a resume, i feel accomplished and happy with myself for helping.
