Freshman Seminar @ Baruch College

Your life your money

This was my student life workshop. It was pretty interesting. I mean the ideas that they proposed to us about scholarships, and just money saving tips was interesting, however i knew all of this. I’m part koala bear so i naturally have a nack for saving money. I did enjoy the cold pizza, the warm soda and the wrist band usb’s. I did doze off for a part of it but i think that it was a general success.

Fro (november 10th)

This freshman seminar was by far the most informative. I got so much needed information about registering for classes. i feel more confident about everything. I feel more confident even because Paul is also a political science major and i feel like i have someone to go and talk to if i desperately need some help. The powerpoint presentation was greatly explained. It was a great idea. the STARR center seems to be a great idea. I will sign up as soon as possible. I will also try to join the prelaw club and model united nations.

Mediating Conflict & Resolving Disputes @ Baruch College

During this workshop, the facilitator mostly spoke how about communication was the key factor in resolving the problems between people. There were people who volunteered their personal experiences to the rest of us and the instructor gave us advice on what to do if we were personally in that same situation. The example I found most interesting was the one about how people choose to go against the school rule and enter in the elevator from the exit which causes a disruption in the flow of elevators and causes many inconveniences for many people who choose to follow the rules. Thus, we talked about how we could handle this issue by letting the faculty members know what’s going on and possibly getting an ombudsman if the situation between the people worsens. The speaker herself was a mediator in the school and helps to resolve such issues in school including and example she gave about how there was a faucet in the bathroom that would continually pour out gallons of water each day, which contributed to the extensive use of water. It was a pretty interesting workshop and many people who attended had a good sense of humor, so it was fun. This workshop took place in the same room that we meet for freshman seminar was was surprising and there were also some arguments going on about letting the people into the room when there was no more seats or space. This eventually became another topic that we spoke about and how one of the people who went to the workshop would take action by finding out who was in charge and telling them what can be done to better the system. Overall, it was an okay workshop and she let us out an hour early when it was supposed to be 2 hrs. so that was nice.

Coloring Up Your Future Workshop

when i first found out about this workshop, i felt very relieved and grateful. The only other global awareness workshop available was the blood drive and i did not like the idea of giving away blood at all. after showing up at the workshop, i realised they were giving out free sandwiches. free food always makes everything better. the speech Alfonso Quiroz gave was actually quite interesting and did not make me fall asleep. he gave good pointers and mentioned many significant qualities that one should have to be successful. for example, there will always be people in this world who will put you down and tell you that you cant do something or your not good enough. however, its important to ignore all of these remarks and just continue working hard towards your goals.

color up your world wrokshop

Last workshop of the year!!!! last blog of the year!! So this last workshop wasn’t what I, and i suspect most people, were thinking. We had a politician speak today. He told us about what it is like being an openly gay politician. I was surprised how much he has accomplished despite all of the hardships he has faced being both gay and mixed nationality. If I were anywhere near somewhat interested in politics his speech would have inspired me to go into politics. It was a good speech though and it shed some light on some interesting issues.

coloring up your world workshop

Today i attended the coloring up your world workshop for global awareness. I thought the speaker was very interesting and gave a very persuasive speech about his life. When i first heard of this workshop i thought it was just going to be about gay people and granting them rights but i actually learned a lot from the lecture we were given. I think the moral of the whole story was about hard work and determination and how those 2 qualities can make you very successful in any area of work you choose. People will always be talking s*** about you and you can’t pay any attention to that or feed off of any negativity. His story about interning in the White House and being a part of presidential campaigns was very insightful and showed that your personal life has no affect on your career. This workshop was very persuading and i would recommend it to everyone.

Awesome Freshman Seminar

I thought this weeks freshman seminar class was awesome. I learned so much about the Starr center. The power point presentation was very informative. The starr center seems like a great resource. I might visit it sometime in the next year or two. Freshman seminar is really fun. I learn so much about the schools resources in it.

freshman seminar yesterday

So yesterdays freshman seminar was a pretty good one.  Before it I didn’t know of all the useful things offered at the Starr Career Development Center.  Now I know that when I am ready to look for an internship that is the place to go.  I will definitely go there to get some tips for fixing up my resume.  Also by sophomore year I think I will go there for a mock interview to increase my interviewing skills before I actually have to attend some real ones.  One of the most useful things I was able to find that the Starr Career Development Center offers is the aid to helping you pick a major.  Im really not sure about exactly what major I want and I will definitely go to them for help on that subject.  The Starr Career Development Center seems like a great tool that I will start using towards my advantage as best I can.

Community Awareness – End Poverty Walkathon

This previous Sunday, I attended a walkathon whose goal was to raise awareness and fundraise to take part in donating to the poor.  The weather was perfect, it was in the mid-6os and it was a sunny day.  There were many people and I decided to make my boyfriend come with me on the walk.  We all met by the Hudson River at Pier 45 at 2 P.M. and all the people were very friendly and nice.  Along the walk, there was also the coordinator who served as a tour guide for us to and introduced the surroundings.  While searching for a volunteer opportunity, I found myself also motivated to register to volunteer for many other walks as well such as the Avon Breast Cancer one.  My grandmother had died of breast cancer and I felt like all these walks were worth the day I would use to attend.  Sadly, most of the walks took place in October so I would have to wait until next year.  But, at least when next year comes around, I would find the passion once again to volunteer.

BTW if anyone wants to take a look at the website of the walk I went to it’s www.change.net or www.heartsandminds.org

Stress and Anxiety Relief

I attended the stress and anxiety relief workshop last Tuesday, on the 3rd. The workshop was designed to show ways to relieve stress. This is especially important in college, where large portions of our time need to be spent doing classwork and studying. The meditation part wasn’t very effective. Originally the workshop was supposed to be in a small room but was relocated to a larger room. As a result, the speakers that the meditation guide was played through weren’t loud enough and I could not make out what the track was saying most of the time. Still, it was relaxing to not have to do anything for a few minutes. I wasn’t exactly sure what they meant when they described negative feelings such as feeling that you won’t be able to pass a test are only passing feelings. The portion where they spoke about bargaining with your parents seemed to be pretty common sense. Overall the workshop kept me interested throughout the hour.
