The very first workshop that I went to was the freshmen reception workshop. This was a very easy and none informative workshop. The people who were holding it were not prepared for the amount of people that had actually showed up. What ended up happening was we came in sat down for 15 minutes and then they signed our books. Hopefully next year Baruch will be better prepared for this workshop because the information that they wanted to present us was useful but because lack of staff for the amount of students that showed it, the workshop ended up failing.
Hair on Broadway!
On Friday November 20, I went with my learning community to go see Hair on Broadway. The show takes place in the U.S. during the 1960’s, the same time the Vietnam War was taking place. Hair shows us how the counterculturalist youth during this era were opposed to the Vietnam War. This generation of young teenagers dressed differently and were called hippies. We see throughout the show how the hippies joined together as one to protest against the war and against the ideas of their parents’ generation. One of the main characters Berger along with many others, burns his draft card while Claude does not. Claude ends up fighting in a war that he doesn’t believe in, as a result he gets killed. This show relates to Global-Community Awareness because it’s about how these young group of teenagers unite to protest against something that they don’t agree with.
Hair On Broadway
On Friday night on November 20th, I went with my learning community to watch the Broadway show, Hair. Hair was based on the 1960s where the Vietnam War took place. This show relates to global-community awareness because it talks about how the 1960s and the hippies community were affected by this war. Claude, the main character of the show decided not to burn his draft card while his other companions did. In the end, Claude died while his best friend Burger did not because he followed the path he thought was right. The show helped me learned how hippies were and how the American community was during the Vietnam War.
Hair on Broadway
Our LC went to see Hair last Friday. The show itself was interesting, most of us liked it. The best part was that we had great seats! Many of us sat in Row L (which is 12 rows from the stage).
Broadway Hair
On Friday November 20, our Learning Community went to see Hair on Broadway. The show was very entertaining and informative. The show represented the 1960s era where the young adults were hippies and rejected their parents’ view. It was a musical about the Vietnam War and how the draft changed the lives of people. The main character, Claude decided to not burn his draft card although everyone around him was doing so. Accordingly, he died in the war that he opposed.
Club Fair
So I kind of forgot to blog about this, but I’m doing it now I attended the Club Fair back in October. I remember it was in the gym and there was many people who attended. There was two long lines to get in and it took about 15 minutes to get in. After I got in, I looked all the clubs and got information and flyers for the ones I was interested in. There were many clubs that provided food and snacks but I didn’t take any. After we browsed all the tables, my friends and i want to leave because it was extremely crowded. However, it was difficult to find a person to sign our books. After 5 minutes, we finally found somebody and then we left. I thought the Club Fair was very informative. It was very social but it was too crowded. Overall, it was an interesting experience and I will probably attend it next year.
Study abroad fair
The study abroad fair was held towards the beginning of the school year and i realized i had forgotten to blog about it. I think it was more catered to the upperclass man and didn’t really have any opportunities for freshmen to travel. However, i did see many places i did want to go to in the future.
Resume Workshop
i had gone to the workshop directed by the Starr career development center. I thought it was one of the more informative workshops. They gave us a packet and we went through it during the workshop. The really went into depth and gave us tips on how to write a good resume. although i did wish that they would go over writing a cover letter more.
Career Planning
i attended the impression management workshop. i learned of what employers and others look for when they first see someone. we were taught the importance of first impressions and what the meaning of our outfits and appearances will portray to others as. i was told that employers who are looking for students for internships or career opportunities want serious and ambitious students. they first judge a student not by their academics or anything because they will always look at you first before they get the chance to read your resume. if they see that a student is not in business attire and is just wearing casual clothes, they will automatically assume that the student is not serious in his or her work and will have a bad impression. i believe this workshop will be very useful in the future.
Global awareness
I attended a lecture called perspectives on immigration. i learned some pretty interesting facts at this lecture. they talked about mainly Mexican immigrants and Puerto ricans. they also mentioned about African Americans and how these 3 enthnicities interact . depending on the interactions of these 3 elasticities, their education and career will differ was the theory. but based on research and interviews from people of these elasticities over a 20+ year span, the professor was proven wrong and the results were actually quite astoundingly different from the predicted outcome. the professor was to publish a book on this and we were asked of what would be an appropriate title for the book and we had discussions of the topic.
