Sacc Academic Enrichment workshop

Today I went to the Student Academic Consulting Center’s workshop. A representative from the math department delivered valuable information. Despite her outstanding knowledge, the representative lacked the ability to apply it to us. She informed us about good test-taking tips, good study habits, and developing confidence. I personally felt that this workshop was not to my expectations because the presented information was common and mediocre. She stressed that we all take advantage of the free tutoring. However, this workshop turned out to be really enjoyable.

Workshop #4: Gallery Tour

So I went to the Gallery Tour at 1pm today. There was a lot of people so I ended up waiting half an hour to actually go on the tour. The Gallery was called “The Nature of Landscape / The Nature of Photography.” Since photography is one of my hobbies, I was actually interested in this workshop; I was interested in seeing some of the photographs on display. One of those photographs was Kazhitna Glacier by Marilyn Bridges. She took this in Denali, Alaska and it’s an amazing birds-eye view of the glacier; it also has a great contrast of white, black, and grays. I also liked another photograph taken by Bridges called Stonehenge #2. As the title suggests, it is a birds-eye view of Stonehenge at Wiltshire, England; the photo beautifully captures the essence of Stonehenge and the surroundings of it. I really liked how Stonehenge looked so small in the photo; it looked like a target in a huge field. Those were my two favorite photos in the gallery. This was an interesting workshop except for the waiting time but overall, the workshop was short and fascinating.

Freshmen Reception Workshop

The “Freshmen Reception” workshop was one of the first workshops held. This workshop was the one where about 1,000 students showed up and the people managing the workshop did not have a back-up plan. We were basically split up into rooms and for 10 minutes talked to about how the outcome of the students was totally unexpected. When we were getting our agendas signed, the lady told us to pick up a packet the following week about what that workshop was about.

Managing Relationships Workshop

On Thursday (10/8) I went to the “Managing Relationships” workshop. The title basically explains it all, how to manage different types of relationships with different types of people while you are attending college. It was interesting because I never really paid much attention to how me being in college would affect my family and friends at home. The speaker was a psychologist who works in the Career Center at Baruch. She told us that this is a critical time in our lives when we have to learn how to network with different people. If we don’t learn now how to have conversations with people that we’ve never met before, then it will become difficult for us in the future. During the workshop, the speaker made all of us stand up, move around and “network” with other students. In general this workshop was useful because I learned that even though I’ve become friends with the students from our LC I should also get to know other Baruch students that are sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Workshop #3

So on Thursday, I went to the workshop “Managing Relationships In College.” It was an interesting workshop. The speaker was a psychologist and a staff member at the Career Center. She told us ways in which we could improve our relationships with family, friends, and others in college. She pointed out that college might be a big transition for some people and it may take time to adjust to. There was some activities during the workshop too. For example, we broke up into groups and discussed problems that could arise when people have romantic relationships during college. Also, the speaker had an informative presentation which was helpful to me and for other freshmen as well. Overall, the workshop ended a little earlier but still lasted about an hour. There were a few peer mentors present at the workshop so getting the signature was no problem for anybody.

Workshops this week

First workshop i went to this week was to Sidney Mishkin museum which is behind the Manson building. It was a pretty quick gallery tour of paintings, took about 15 mins. We looked at some photographs and talked about how the settings and how they made us feel. Some of the pictures were really good and peaceful, while others were erotic and exquisite. I think they have this workshop every Tuesdays, definitely worth going to.

Second workshop i went to was the managing relationships in college on Thursday. This workshop took about an hour and talked about managing family, social, and personal relationships while we are in college. It had some helpful tips in how to make and keep relationships. Overall they kinda repeated themselves over and over and wasn’t very helpful, but worth going to to get the workshop credit.

I also ripped off the workshop paper from my planner, and misplaced it… so now I am missing all my workshops. What can I do?  🙁

Essays Quality Level

I enjoy writing, and kind of take pride on it. That is why I was in shock when my english proffesor, Proff. Carl Rollyson, send back the firsrt draft of my essay with a “D grade. It is just the first draft and i suppose he wants us our writing to evolve.

Perhaps I got carreid away by my teachers in high school who were delgihted with my use of vocabulary, but who didn’t told me that i was wrting  “WAY TOO OBVIOUS PHRASES”

Workshops and how baruch is for me so far.

On September 22 I went to the Sonia Sotomayor workshop.  It was about an hour long but I wasn’t really happy with it.  Instead of talking about what she is planning to do for the nation and what her goals are, they mainly talked about her history and early life.  Much of it I had already known but I felt that what was more important was about knowing about what she wants to do NOW.  They touched a bit on how she won’t be racist in her judgements in court but I would have wanted to know what exactly she has done thus far.  With this workshop I felt a bit disenchanted.

So far I feel like Baruch has been pretty good.  I don’t feel lost here but I do want to get more involved with the school.  I don’t enjoy just coming in and going home.  However, it is hard because two of the four days we are here we end at 5:30.  I feel that it is hard for me personally to juggle work, school and my personal social life.  The work load here is greater than what most of my friends get in other CUNY and for them it is easier to juggle all of this.  But on a brighter side I do enjoy coming to school.  I plan to join a club, I am not sure which one exactly but hopefully within these couple of weeks i’ll decide on a club that I would feel is more beneficial to me for my future and at the same time is exciting.
