This was a community awareness event that I attended with my English class. We came in and there was a Nigerian-born professor of African studies who shared with us something about what diversity. I expected him to talk about diversity in the world or even in New York (which he did touch on once) but mostly spoke about his career in diversity education. It was still interesting. There were some other professors and students who spoke about diversity. I agree with one of the professors when she spoke about economic diversity how there are poor students in the school who do not have access to the internet and are expected to do work on the Internet. Something needs to be done. But the person who spoke most about racial diversity in New York was a student. But I did not agree with him. He said that in the cafeteria, people only sit with their racial and ethnic groups. I do not agree with this one bit. At Baruch, I always see students from different ethnicities interacting and sitting and eating together so I do not know what he was talking about.
The workshop was not bad. I was glad to see people who care about the importance of diversity.
