The goal of this workshop was to explore how Baruch college differentiates itself from other various institutions; of how diversity in Baruch promotes positive learning experiences as well as the negatives. The guest speaker Professor Vaughan, spoke an abundance about globalization, yet in my opinion he failed to address diversity in Baruch College, which this entire workshop was basically based upon. However i do believe the panelist did a wonderful job on their responses and all of them succeeded in elaborating how diversity has affected Baruch College. One of my favorite responses was given from Professor Kyra Gaunt because she gave an extremely accurate example of how diversity in Baruch can effect students. The story was of how a teacher told a student to drop his class because he told her that she would not be able to pass because her english communication skills were not on par to the other classmates. When i heard this i was somewhat furious to even have to imagine something like this happening. This discriminatory action should never ever have to take place in this school and in the world. A teacher should never have to encourage a student to take any action that undermines there ability to succeed.
Lastlyt i would like to bring up what Holdyn Brand had to say about students in the cafeteria; that the Asians would sit together in one table, whites in the other, and so forth. This was fascinating not only because i know it to be true, but because this has happened in every school that i have been in. Perhaps individuals develop a tighter bond with members of their own race, or they are afraid to go outside of their comfort zone. Nonetheless, I believe the question of diversity would take wonders of years to answer, and the best way to find the answer is to experience it rather than to have it explained.
