Personal Enrichment Workshop – November 3, 2009 – 1:00pm

The personal enrichment workshop was very fun to attend since it involved the participation of the students. This was different from the other workshops because instead of just listening to a speaker we were able to engage into an activity. There were two speakers who took turns giving different lessons to the students. Most of the time the speakers were not able to take control of the group of students in the room and it was hard to pay attention. The students were very talkative and disruptive until one of the speakers finally spoke up. One of the speakers made us engage into an activity that was thought to relive stress and help us on relaxing every muscle in our body. Some of these techniques were similar to a yoga class I took before and I already knew the basics. It refreshed my memory and I found it helpful because I tend to get really stressed out especially when exams are in the midst. Another one of the activities included a raisin. The speaker handed a raisin to each student and we were supposed to analyze the raisin and then eat it slowly. This activity was supposed to give us a different perspective on eating the raisin when we realize what we were doing. We were supposed to feel the raisin with our tongues and take time chewing it, tasting every moment. I found this workshop fun besides the fact of the disturbance of some of the students. If there had been more control of the group, it would have been easier to understand and fully engage into the activity,

Arts at Baruch – November 17, 2009 – 2:00pm

Out of all the workshops, I was really looking forward to attend the one based on the “Arts at Baruch.” At first I only expected to find workshops that focused on theater performances but then I found out that Baruch had an art gallery. I found it interesting to become aware of place that I never knew existed. When I walked into the building I noticed that there were many people waiting in line for the tour to start. I thought that maybe they were going to let the students in at exactly 1pm and I arrived there a few minutes early. I wasn’t able to see what was beyond the closed doors and I imagined a wide-open space room with huge paintings that were what they usually portray on television. I was on the line for about thirty to forty minutes. They were letting in groups of twenty at a time. I became very frustrated that by the time it was my groups turn I was expecting some excitement from the art gallery, which made me wait plenty of time. The tour of the art gallery was much shorter than the amount of time I had waited on line. The art was not fascinating at all. I realized that I do not really appreciate art since I thought that the painting I had seen appeared to be splatters of paint thrown onto a canvas. At the beginning I was really drawn to the paintings but as the tour progressed all the paintings appeared to be the same. The tour guide did not make an effort to make the tour exciting and I do not blame her because she had consistently been giving the same tour plenty of times. Overall this workshop was only helpful to inform me of an art gallery in the school. It could have been more exciting and interesting if I was not forced to wait on line for that amount of time.

Fro-Internship and Goals Setting

Career Exploration – October 22, 2009 – Club Hours

This workshop was the longest and the most helpful of all. Even though I was unable to pay attention throughout the entire time, I gained plenty of knowledge on how to apply for an internship. I knew that Baruch was able to find students internships but I did not know they helped us through the process as well. I have not really put any effort working on my resume and I learned that the resume is your first impression. The STARR career development center helps students though the entire process. I found this workshop very helpful out of all of them because if helped me find the perfect place where I can receive help on working on my resume. The speaker helped all of the students learn about the different types of internships and she even gave us a few sites and companies to look into. The only problem with this workshop was that it was very long. The speaker was overwhelming us with a lot of information that it was hard to grasp at points. This lead me to wander my mind elsewhere and trail off the topic. Besides that, I was able to take hold and understand key points on internships and they were very useful. I plan on making an appointment with the STARR career development center soon. Without the help of this workshop I would not have known what the STARR career development center is about or what it helps the students with.

Freshman Reception

Academic Enrichment – September 17, 2009 – Club Hours

The freshman reception that was held on September 17, 2009 was not helpful at all. The room was crowed by the entire incoming freshmen and there was no organization. Every freshman at Baruch was handing their book, to get signed, to the nearest person, who was allowed to sign it, and walked out. I attended this workshop in the hope of attaining help since I was new to the school and I didn’t know exactly how to get around. All I did was get a hold of the papers being held out, which I hoped would help me even if this event was of no use at all. There should have been more organization and a limited number of seats in order for the students to be able to learn something useful out of this workshop.

Debate on Diversity

Community-Global awareness – September 14, 2009 – 12:30pm

I thought this workshop was going to be very boring, straight from the beginning. The room was mostly filled with older people and the only students whom attended the event were my English class. As the discussion was handed to the people on the panel it became interesting and I was drawn into their views on diversity at Baruch College. The people on the panel had very interesting ideas to talk about. One topic that interested me the most was when one person on the panel started to talk about the different ethnicities and how people from the same ethnicity only mingle with each other. Instead of trying to make friends with people of other races they only stay within their own race. I agree with his point of view, even though this is not true with all the students. I have noticed that people of the same race only make friends with each other most of the time but there are other students at Baruch, like my friends and I, who interrelate with people of other races. Other discussions that were made by the panel were interesting as well, but this one really caught my attention. Overall I feel this was my favorite workshop because it made me learn and become interested on the diversity at Baruch College.

Club Fair

Student Life

The Club Fair had many clubs and was a good way to find a club that you may be interested in. It was extremely packed and took forever to get into and once I got in, it didn’t change. I was able to check out a few clubs, but did not join any. This is a good workshop for people who are looking to get involved.

Arts at Baruch

I honestly did not find this workshop interesting at all. The paintings were nice, but the person speaking about them was very boring.  I am usually not a big fan of art and this certainly did not “wow” me or change my opinion on it at all.

Bearcat: The Other Google 10-20-09

This workshop was very informative, since I was unaware that Baruch had it’s own search engine. This became very helpful for me when I had to do a research paper. The guy who spoke was pretty interesting and clearly delivered the proper ways to use it. I would recomend this workshop to anyone who doesn’t know how to use Bearcat.

Annual Club Fair!

September 24, 2009 – During Club Hours – the Main Gym

Student Life

I did not intentionally go there to explore different clubs in Baruch, but I went there to help out representing my club: InterVarsity Chapter at Baruch College, to Baruch students. Honestly, I got to meet so many different people during one and half hours. I also noticed that there are over 100 student-run clubs at Baruch College. I thought the fact that there are alot of clubs was impressive because everyone in Baruch has commuter status – commuting from home everyday regardless of rain and snow. Anyways, it was fun telling students about my club and how I got to be involved with this club. In all fairness, many were actually interested in what I was saying. Overall, it was a great day there and I had so much fun interacting with fellow club members and new members.

I am definitely recommending  this workshop to everyone in Baruch, for extracurricular is VITAL for successful college life.

Blog : Personal Enrichment

John O’ Connor, a rather funny novelist, was actually one of the only people to keep me interested in workshop. He spoke with great confidence and told his own stories to us which actually had me intrigued. Prior to each reading, he spoke about the story and gave us a small summary. He also told us whether it may be long, short, boring, exciting, interesting, or whatever characteristics might correspond. Knowing that we were young and immature, he began to tell jokes to keep us awake and alive which was actually pretty smart because people next to me began to doze, wake up, laugh, and possibly stay awake for the next 5 minutes. It was quite enjoyable to have listened to him speak with his Irish accent.
