Stress Workshop

We did a meditation thing like we did in psychology and everything was peaceful. We closed our eyes and paid attention to what was going on through our body, our breathing, our heart rates. We also had to tighten our fists and release them as if we were releasing stress. At first I didn’t know how to relax myself but the presenter guided us through step by step. This workshop helped relaxed me a lot.

The SACC Tutoring center

My visit to the SACC tutoring center was brief but informative. I went there with one of my classmates because we were interested in getting a tutoring session for math. Neither of us were doing that well in that class and we decided that it would be a good idea to get in a session of tutoring for the class before a test. We both went down to the SACC tutoring center and gave our id’s in so that we could enable ourselves to register online for tutoring sessions. My friend had time to go to a session that day, But i had to go run a few errands so I couldnt make it for that day, however I went online and learned how to schedule appointments from home, and now the tutoring center is very easy for me to use. It’s definatly handy when studying for midterms or just before a test, to make sure you’ve got everything down tight.

Coat/Toy drive

Me and two of my classmates decided to help out with the coat/toy drive for our Global awareness workshop. We sat at a desk on the second floor during club hours and waited to see if anyone would donate anything. After about half an hour we were in the same place as we had started in,still no coats or toys. It was then that we decided to take the boxes and walk around and apporach students and ask them to donate to the children. A few people were kind enough to donate, and although they didnt have any toys or coats to give, we did manage to raise a few dollars for the children. We returned the boxes and the money we made to the man who helped out and the proceeds of what we earned were put toward buying a toy to donate to the drive. Although we didnt get much, we still tried our best and ended up getting at least one toy to make a child happy.

Basic Interviewing skills

I thought the workshop was very organized and well presented.  She was very clear and projected her voice loud enough that people in the back of the room could hear her. She was also funny which made the workshop past by faster and enjoyable. Although I already knew some of the information, the workshop still helped me a lot on preparing myself for internships and for the next four years of college.

Stress and Anxiety Reduction

As I stepped into the stress and anxiety workshop, I took a seat, and was given a raisin. I had already guessed what was going to happen next, because we had already gone over this excersice in the beginning of my pyschology class early in the semester. We were told to use each sense to explore the raisin as if we had never seen one before. This was a practice of mindfulness techniques. We were instructed to slowly feel, smell, bite and then eat the raisin. This made us more mindful of the situation and was supposed to make eating it much more intense. After we were explained mindfulness techniques, another man came in and taught us about muscle relaxation and how it can help alliviate stress in our bodies. It was a very handy little process and really helped relax muscles all over my body from my legs all the way up to my face muscles.

Club Fair

Back in the beginning of the semester, I decided to go to the club fair and see what clubs were available to join on campus. I had a few clubs in mind and I wanted to see if they had them at Baruch. Of those, I was interested to see if there was an art club, a photography club, or a music club. I entered the gymnasium and saw a huge crowd of people, and lots of little stands.I tried to find the clubs I was interested in so I began to wander through the crowds and search them. Unfortunatley, before I had the chance to find any clubs, I had realized that I dodnt have much time to eat before my next class,so I had to leave early from the fair. Although i couldnt join the particular clubs this semester, I will try again the following semester , this time I’ll make sure to eat beforehand.

Mercedes Matter: A retrospective

When I went to the Mercedes Matter gallery for the Arts at Baruch workshop,  I was guided with a group of other students on a tour of Mercede’s artwork. The guide stopped at each section of the galleryand told us about the work, how far her style was developed, and at what point in her life she had painted the paintings. We went into cubism and how her style became more abstract as she got older. She began to create her own style of art which was very new for the time period she had lived in. She went from surrealism  to very intricate abstract work as her style progressed, and her paintings became more enigmatic. I learned a bit about a new artist that I had not known about before and overall, it was a very enjoyable experience.

Club Fair (yes, I know its late…) – Student Life

Yes, I know this is a very late submission.  But I’m sure a lot of people are rushing through their blogs last minute…right?

Went to the Club Fair on September 24th.

Had to say, I didn’t enjoy it very much.  The line was long.  I’m a short guy.  So it wasn’t pleasent.

When I finally got in, it was just a mess.  I went in looking for just one club (Anime club, if you’re curious), but felt claustrophobic after a couple of moments and left.

I think I stayed on the line longer than I did in the fair…

I’m trying to think of something witty to say at this point, but I’m drawing a blank.  So I’ll just withdraw happily, knowing that those who read this post wasted another couple of seconds reading this part.

Stress and Anxiety – Personal Enrichment

I went to the “Stess and Anxiety” workshop on November 10th at 1:00 PM.

I definitely left the workshop a whole lot less stressed, since I slept through the majority of it.

The presenter was sort of quirky, but uninteresting otherwise.
The first thing we did was a “raisin exercise” and we had to do some sort of layered physical analysis of it.  I just ate it and snoozed off.

The only interesting part is was when the next presenter entered, and he just happen to be the same height, complexion, and wore the same type of clothing as the previous presenter.  Everyone joked that they were twins, or “closer”.

The techniques they taught us was actually kind of painful; one is where we had to tighten our muscles, and then release them.  It didn’t really feel like I was relieving stress, but I can get how it might work for some people.

But overall, it did do what it set out to accomplish, so I guess its time well spent.

Arts at Baruch – Mercedes Matter

This workshop occurred on December 1st.  I was glad that it was very short.  The presenter was very boring.  She focused on every detail on all the paintings.  At first, based on the workshop’s title, I thought it was going to be about cars or something, but I definitely had the wrong idea. The whole workshop’s main focus were on fruits.. I didn’t learn anything from this workshop.  I felt like I was going to the museum all over again. I would not want to attend another arts workshop, though I am curious to know what they will be on.
