stress and anxiety

This workshop was quite interesting because it dealt with a matter that majority of college students face which is stress. The instructors first began by heightning our senses through an activity in which we had to observe a raisin with all our five senses. Then we moved into how to relieve stress that builds up in our bodies. So we stretched each of our body parts starting from the toes and working all the way up to our necks. The sensation after was great and I felt more relaxed. In addition i learned a great tip to calm my anxiety by the breathing in and out excercise to calm the heart down. Over all I enjoyed this workshop and the valuable lessons learned

Impression Management

This was the longest workshop I attended.  It was mostly common sense like what to do and not to do. Obviously your not suppose to wear a tshirt for an accountant position or chew gum during an interview. The instructor was nice thou. It was so boring, im sorry but it was soo soo soooo fricken boring. Some keet, I mean kid,  would not be quiet. I feel bad for people who have to sit next to him in other classes.  Anyways, it’s a good workshop if you never worked before or new to the business field but overall I did not enjoy it.

Stress, Anxiety and Sleep workshop

This was suppose to be a Stress  & Anxiety workshop but I spent most of my time sleeping. Hey, the guy told us to close our eyes and channel our thoughts out. I did just that for the whole time. I had a nice comfy seat where I could lean my head to the wall and sleep. I remember the instructor and his secretary looked exactly the same. That was interesting.  I actually liked this workshop, it wasnt useless like some other workshops cough Arts at Baruch cough.

Blood Drive

To complete my Community-Global Awareness worshop, I decided to donate blood. My appointment was at 2 o Clock. It was quicker than I expected. This is the second time I donated blood & so I was kind of used to it. The nurses were nice, I was surprised by how many students donated blood.

Mercedes really didn’t Matter!

This was probably the longest workshop I waited for. It wasn’t worth wait thou. The tour guide seemed like she belongs in a Visine commercial with Ben Stein.  She gave us basic info about the paintings.  I have no idea how this enriched my freshman experience so that is why I believe this workshop should be terminated.  If it wasn’t for the individuals I was with, I’d be deathly bored the whole time.  So I thank thee!

Coat and Toy Drive

It was fun to say the least. Time was running out and we really needed to find a global awareness workshop so me,Yash and Gurami volunteered at the coat and toy drive. Although the HIV Awareness table stole our table, we did manage to attract some attention. Noone brought coats or toys. So we decided to go around asking for donations for the kids without christmas presents. I did not realize how many frugal and blackhearted students attend Baruch. Some wouldn’t even throw in some pocket change. However, we did manage to collect up to five dollars for our drive. It was not a complete waste of time. Those five dollars can be used to get kids some toys. It’s better than nothing right?

Basic Interviewing Skills

I had been to the Advance Interviewing Skills prior to this event, but the speaker delivered the information much better than the one at the Advance workshop. I did really enjoy coming to this event. I met alot of people who intern in the same building as me and some future interns that were interviewing for the opportunity as well. The skills they taught us in this was very similar to the impression management workshop that was held a few months ago. Rhona, the woman that was running the workshop, was really nice, had a sense of humor. It made the workshop all that more enjoyable. Afterwards, I was given the chance to sent down with her to do a quick resume review without even making an appointment at the STARR center. The time spent at this event was definitely worth it.

Mercedes Matters

The line for this workshop was really long. However, I did manage to get in within a few seconds of entering the building. I cut the line. In any event, the tour was really short. Everyone was excited and anxious to leave within twenty minutes. Nothing really sparked my interest. The tourguide was giving simple analysis to the paintings and did not really go in depth with each painting so it was simply a look-and-go. I did have a chance to apply my own analytical skills I developed in Art History to the paintings I saw that day though. All in all, the tour was okay. There could be improvement.

Bearcat: The Other Google

In this workshop the speaker showed us how to use the library’s research database, which can be found through the Newman Library’s website. We learned that different search engines are meant for specific subjects and topics. For example, Biography Resource Center can be used specifically for researching a historical person. We were shown how to enter our information, and how to narrow down our search to specific results that would be most helpful. We were also shown how to look for a specific book, article, journal or essay for research.

This workshop went fairly well. However, though this workshop was very helpful and informative, the speaker could have done a better job with her presentation. It was a very small group of about ten, and the meeting took place in the lobby of the Newman Library, so I understood the need for her to keep her voice low. However, this was no excuse for her to practically whisper throughout the whole presentation. I appreciated the fact that she didn’t want to make too much noise, but she could have projected her voice a bit more so that we all didn’t have to strain our ears.

A mandated workshop to reduce stress?

One might think that these mandated workshops and blogs are just another bullet point on our long list of things to do, but I’m grateful for them. Each one introduces something new that is invaluable to our learning and professional lives, and this one in particular aimed to reduce stress, thus making us more productive in all areas. We began with common ways that we get stressed, and talked about preventing ourselves from being in stressful situations in the first place. As we all know, stress is inevitable, so it was important that we had active ways to combat it. One way was to be more mindful and aware of our surroundings. We had a sensory activity in which we examined every aspect of a raisin including how it looks, feels, smells, and tastes. We took a lot of time for this to really get to know the raisin. After we were through, we were calmer from having spent so much of our focus on becoming mindful of all of the sensations, and also from focusing on one task. We had done the same thing in my psychology class, so this was nothing new, but there was then a muscle relaxation exercise that I found to be very effective. It involved tensing your muscles, one group at a time working from head to toe, and then releasing them. Building up tension by flexing or stretching brought our stress level higher, but upon releasing and relaxing we felt relieved. It’s something I’ll definitely keep in mind as I make my way through college, where stress is just going to accumulate exponentially.
