Art Matters

The Arts at Baruch workshop that I attended was a gallery tour of the work of Mercedes Matter. The workshop was a popular one, but whether it was because of the work or because we needed workshops to attend is up to you to decide. The line to get in was quite long, and there was a bit of a wait to get in since space in the gallery was limited. Once we were in, the tour guide showed us Matter’s work chronologically, allowing us to see how her work changed throughout her lifetime. The artwork tended to get more abstract as her life went on, which left it a lot more open to interpretation. And interpret we did. The guide left time for us to observe, discuss, and ask questions before moving to the next piece, and at the end, some time was given for us to wander freely. Ideally, this is what any tour of a gallery would be like. We have the insight given by the guide combined with freedom to walk around, and the sum is a good learning experience that introduced us to art we probably would not have seen elsewhere. The large crowd that gathered for this workshop made the right decision; this was a worthwhile experience that I’m glad to have attended.

Impression Managing

This Career Exploration workshop covered a lot of basics for how to present yourself at an interview. A lot of it was prior knowledge or common sense, but it never hurts to reiterate what’s important or give a quick refresher. A memorable moment was when the workshop leader told us that not a single person in the room looked ready for an interview. Given, none of us were expecting to actually be interviewed, but she did point out how most of us had bad posture or lacked the ability to enunciate, things we automatically corrected upon her pointing out. This goes to show that there are things we may not notice we are doing, but are still important in an interview. I participated a lot during this workshop, and personally, I think I speak well enough, but I’m still glad to have attended and will keep everything in mind when I apply for my next job.

Club Fair

The club fair did not fare very well for me, unfortunately. I found the event to be very crowded and difficult to get information or a sense of what certain clubs are like. For me, attending a club is a much better way to get the general feel of it, but the fair did do a good job of informing us of all the available clubs, since it would be impossible to visit them all. One thing the fair was successful at was showing student life; the gymnasium was bustling with activity and full of school and club spirit. Perhaps if I had made a better attempt to engross myself in the fair and various activities that were going on, I would have gotten more out of the event. Like most things in life, the club fair is what you make of it; I tended to walk around and observe rather than actively participate, but at the very least, I found a club that I regularly attend to this day.

Job Fair Workshop

I went to the job fair workshop on Thursday and I did not think it would help me at all. However, it ended up to be pretty helpful. I enjoyed it, and it wasn’t really boring. The man from Verizon gave us tips on attending the job fair and talking to the people at the career booths. They also gave us papers about attire and elevator speeches. It really opened up my eyes to how important the career fairs can be, and how professional you should act. I did not attend the job fair, however, I will use all of what I learned when I do decide to attend the next one. Great workshop after all!

Student Life – The Truth about Suicide (film)

The workshop was located at the counseling center.  The flm incuded many students’ stories about their friends being suicidal.  2 out of 3 suicidal people do not call for help.  It does not matter if someone is really suicidal or not because it is better to be alright and have someone think you are suicidal than to be suicidal and thought to be alright.  At first I didn’t want to go to watch the video, but instead it helped made me realize that confronting my friends in highschool was not harming them, but rather helping them.  In the film, students told their regrets about finding out symptoms later that it could not save their friends sooner; so be cautious!

Basic Interviewing

I’m going to start off by saying that I really liked the women that was giving the presentation. Although alot of things that were said I already knew because I was part of Academy of Finance in high school, but I did become more comfortable with the idea of approaching Starr for help with jobs. During the workshop I was able to ask questions about the summer internship that I’m interested in doing at a certain company.  The only draw back of the workshop was that it was meant for much more people then there were. Oh and the guy that stamped my passport, put the stamp in the wrong place so that shows his carelessness right there.

Stress management

The workshop is exactly what I needed at this point. It was somewhat helpful in relieving my stress. The exercises that they showed do not seem to help me but the idea of accepting things that cause me stress for what it is, not as bad, really really helped. Right now every time I get stressed out, I look bad at the cause of the stress and approach it more passively.

Internet Workshop

I went to an Internet workshop in the library last week and found it very informative. At first, the instructor was saying things that pretty much seemed like common sense. Then she began to explain more and more about the Web. I learned about Internet directories, and the proper way to search for information. However, she showed us a lot of things I never would have known if I didn’t attend this workshop. One of them was SamSpade.org, which helps you figure out real and legit websites. Next, she told us about Ref Works, which is like EasyBib.com. However, Ref Works is found in the online database at Baruch. I will now be using this for my research purposes because I trust it more than I trust EasyBib. I was very happy that I attended this workshop, and was glad that it helped me, especially since we have three research papers coming up! =(

Personal Enrichment/mediation.

This workshop as oppose to the Career Exploration workshop was kinda of fun. We were given cases about how to handle a certain situation in the right manor. There was a whole lot more interaction between the students and the staff which made it go by a lot faster and it was pretty fun. We were split into groups and then we were given scenarios and we had to act it out and discuss it. After that we had to discuss the scenarios and what we would do as a whole…Class? lol i don’t know if you can call it a class, just everyone. And going over it was fun, and funny. Out of all the workshops that I’ve been to, this was one of the most enjoyable ones. 😀

Career exploration workshop/internship

The workshop was a very informative workshop. It helped me a lot on knowing how to prepare myself for the next four years and know my goals and where I should be standing at this time. The package that was given out was very helpful too as in included tips and step by step directions on how to do certain things, such as finding a internship. Though the workshop was very informative, it was also quite boring too. It just felt like I was sitting there and people were just throwing information at me, there wasn’t much interaction between anyone. It was more like a lecture. Overall it wasn’t that great and it wasn’t that bad.
