Hello LC 11

College, is a seven letter word that can mean different things for different people. For some people, college is a way to better themselves both intellectually, while others may see it as an opportunity to become more socially involved, and some may see it as an opportunity to do both.  Our question to you all is, what has college been like for you these past 2 weeks? Is it similar to high school? What are the classes like? The campus life?

Also, can you please state one interesting fact about yourself. Something that everyone or most of the people in the class wouldnt know. This is an opportunity for you to learn about your fellow classmates and for them to learn something about you.

  1. For me, college’s main difference from high school is the amount of work and less student-teacher interaction. In college, reading is critical in achieving a high GPA as most professors don’t go over what is read as assignment. In the two and a half months i’ve been in college, i can say that unlike high school, college requires your own push, there will not be a professor constantly asking you to pay attention or to do your work. One interesting fact about myself is that I was the able to achieve a 4.0 GPA in H.S while i played starter in Varsity Soccer in school.

College so far has been really nice. I loooove the long breaks and the fact that we have more independence than we did in high school. The work load is as heavy as it was in my high school (was expecting less) …. The only thing that really has been bothering me is the fact that I’m not living a real college experience with a green campus and dorms. They say New York City is the campus but that’s getting quite old…

An interesting fact about me is that I’d always secretely wanted to become a singer but my mom told me my voice sucked when I was younger…there goes that dream

College life has been pretty interesting, and quite different from high school. There is much more freedom, unlike my previous school, and there are always activities going on, whether it be ‘gatherings’ or just a bunch of people waiting on line to play ping pong or pool in the game room. Surpringly, I found the workload to be lighter than expected, and with the schedules that we have, it isn’t hard to make time for anything.

One sort of interesting thing is that I play a lot of people, although now its not as much as i used to >_>

College has definitely been a different but interesting experience compared to high school. There is a lot of work to be done and at the same time there is a large amount of free time. I’ve been having a good time here so far, with the classes and environment. Unlike high school, you actually have to do something to get a good grade here in college. Everything is obviously more complicated and more difficult than high school, but overall, it has been an enjoyable educational experience.
One interesting fact is that I play the piano proficiently but cannot read sheet music. (:

After a month in college, I agree with Jrubin that college has been a rollercoaster. I think that college is going to continue being a roller coaster. The first week of college it hit me again that I am suppose to do work, study, read ( a lot). Since the senior year of high school I didn’t really work hard in the second semester, since I already knew what college I was attending. In addition, it felt weird to be a freshman again. However, by the second week I got used to college. I was able socialized more and I quickly set my mind that I was going to get a lot of work for this semester so instead of thinking about the work, I just do it.
There are not that many differences between high school and college, in high school I was able to go outside for lunch, I was able to experience many liberties and in addition my high school was on Wall St, so the college environment effect didn’t affect me because I was used to the environment. In fact there are more people downtown by Wall St, than 23rd Lexington, where Baruch is. The main difference between high school and college are the facilities that Baruch has, such as a swimming pool, a gym, a basketball courts, and a gymnasium where u can play soccer and baseball. In addition, Baruch has a huge library and the computer labs. Also the classes are longer, but they seem to go quick with the exception of math. The campus life is good, variety of people, a lot of smokers. Hopefully everything keeps going well and there are more ups than downs in the future of my college life.

oh and an interesting fact about myself…i guess would be i can play different instruments? lol

  7. dyim says:

i think that college is somewhat similar because when i was in highschool i didnt really have to stay in school that long which is similar. the main difference is that there is so much more work in college. i never had to really work and concentrate in school and i would get good grades but in college it feels like if i dont work hard and do the readings, i will fail. my classes are pretty good, i like psych, english and sociology…i think pub and math are really boring. the math teacher is so monotone and like i fall asleep even when i try to stay awake….in pub…i just think its boring. its sometimes interesting but most of the time im bored..i think overall campus life is alright …i mean i can go to the lib and get a private room to study which is pretty awesome. i think i will enjoy the rest of college…hopefully.

College at first seemed like it was just going to be the normal stuff. Which simply was just another form of school where you learn some important and not very important things. However, i’ve come to see that college has way more to offer than any high school. Classes are actually interesting and there is social movement within the campus rather than complete lockdown.
Another thing was that in high school they always told us that we were basically adults but yet we were treated like first graders but in college you are an adult and what you do and how you act fall strictly on you. It’s like a new found freedom in which our choices are our own. Let’s see how it progresses.

For the first couple of weeks, I thought college was boring. But Now I kinda like it. I feel more grown up. I even enjoy the long breaks. High School is ten letters that mean JAIL!!! College gives you more freedom. The classes seem kinda easy, even the 7 page essay for PUB wasn’t as bad as some of the stuff I had to do in high school. In high school we had a 50 page time line to do. I think its gonna be an interesting 4 years.

One interesting fact about me is that I really like Kanye West, his music, his style, his personality (no homo)

  10. college its very different from high school. I went to a small high school like 470 students and now in my psy class alone i have 500 students. however, i feel that students in college are more involved in activities and i like that. so far i like my classes. i have learned a lot in past couple weeks. however, for next semester i hope i do not have to take a 7:50 class. i hope i get the classes i want to take.

one interesting fact i love to dip my french fries in ice cream.

College has been a great experience so far. It has been much better than expected. Compared to High School, I have so much more freedom in college. I absolutely love the breaks between classes and being able to come in and out as I wish. Starting off in a learning community gives me a more positive view on college. The learning Community is a perfect opportunity to make friends. My classes so far are good and I am also happy with my schedule. I’m sure things will get more complicated as time goes on. Choosing our own classes next semester will be a mission on its own. Nonetheless, I am excited for my future semesters in Baruch. It seems to be a fun and friendly community with many opportunities.

Interesting fact,,, uh.. i have double jointed thumbs that freak people out! 😉

College for the past week has just been getting acquainted with everything. I had to get used to everything, especially the workload. It’s not too much work or anything, it’s just different expectations to get used too. Meeting all the new people is also another more enjoyable aspect of college. I wanted to join clubs and a sorority however, I realized I have no time. Beside a college life, I have to be able to balance a family life. High school was less freedom then now. Also there is more time and individualism in college. I’m happy to say I pretty much enjoy all my classes. The teachers may sometimes not be the best but you cant really do anything about that. All you can do is work it out on your own or with a study partner or group.

Interesting fact: I am very, very lazy, but helpful (willing to do anything within my limits to help out someone). Ironic, right?

  13. jjoseph says:

Even though it has only been three weeks since the beginning of this semester i feel as if college is like a breath of fresh air. The freedom and experiences you gain from college is nothing like high school. High school and college in no way are the same. not only do you have the opportunity to acquire knowledge but you can do so at your own pace. I believe that in college you do what will make you perform and there is nothing else forced. So far the classes have not been that bad except one but that also is manageable. Even though there is not that big of a campus it is very welcoming.

An interesting fact about me is that i enjoy playing basketball and wanted to become an NBA player until i realized that i wasn’t that good.

  14. rsadman says:

So far I am enjoying the college life. I am satisfied with most of my classes and am mostly able to balance work and schoolwork. I look forward to seeing what its going to be like applying for classes on our own and hope to be able to get the ones i wish. Right now I am doing the best I can to think forward and apply myself to do the best I can, something I would not be saying during High School.

One odd factoid about me is that I really love cars. My of my favorites being BMW. For some reason they always have particular characteristics that I find appealing. Possibly those signature front lights for example.

That’s all I got to say or feel like saying.

    Later.

Even though it has only been like three weeks, I really am loving college. Yes, the work is a lot and the reading too much but I can put up with it. Coming from a very strict catholic school (mind you, I’ve been in catholic school for 12 years) I was happy to have this freedom that I have been restricted of before. I like all my classes, even math. I like the teaching styles of certain professors, while some I think should change theirs. My favorite class so far is psychology. I always look forward to going to that class because the professor is funny and the subject is interesting. Even though, Baruch isn’t a typical college with a big greeny campus, I love it. I like the fact that it isn’t just a building but it doesnt have useless space. It has the perfect size for me.

One interesting fact about me is that I really like to cook and bake a lot.

  16. jrubin says:

To me college has been a rollercoaster of experiences. Its had many ups and downs. I love the freedom of college but i can do withouth the work load. In a way Baruch feels like high school because of the commuting and the fact that Baruch isn’t a typical college campus. I haven’t encountered a professor I didn’t like. College is a learning experience and as time elapses I will feel more comofortable in my environment.

Interesting fact- I run and listen to my ipod religiously

I am in total agreement with you Jsoler. Although I had been part of a College Now program in High School, I would have never imaged how free college students are to follow their interests and participate in so many different activities around campus. Also, I must say that our class schedule is very light, partly because of the effort put forth by our teachers. Our Psychology professor makes the material seem so interesting and relevant to our lives that I often find the minutes slipping by at an unexplainable rate. The same occurs in Professor Mead’s class, where the discussions are always driven by personal experiences. Overall I am very satisfied with the way College has welcomed me.

An interesting fact about me: I have painted oil landscapes for many years now. I’ve been told that I am pretty good at it.

  18. jsoler says:

College has been a whirlwind these past two weeks. It’s nothing like highschool (well, not anything like my highschool). In highschool, I felt as if students were micro-managed. Here, there is a lot more freedom which means more accountability on the part of the student. Also, the student life on campus is much richer than I ever remember in high school. Every professor has their own teaching style and you can’t really generalize what a class will be like unless you know the professor’s style. For example, ENG 2100 is very open-ended and discussion based whereas SOC 1005 is more listening and answering questions. MTH 2003 is…math (enough said). PUB 1250 is a lot of dense, old english reads and philosophy based discussions (I think it should be titled political science). PSY 1001 is nice because of the professor (I wouldn’t be able to sit through the class if he didn’t try to make it interesting).

One really interesting, random, odd factoid about myself is that when I was little, I used to want to do undercover work.
