Latino Heritage Month Gala

In this event the Unidad Latina gave awards to people and to departments that make sure the Latino Community in Baruch is taken into consideration. They awarded the Department of Black and Hispanic Studies for arranging activities for the Latino Community in our school. Also they recognized the work of Angela Anselmo, Director of SEEK Program at Baruch, becuase in the 1990’s when the Latino Community at Baruch was very small and all came in through the SEEK program she was the one that organized events for those Latinos and that help this students to accommodate in theschool even though they were a minority.  They introduced this new program called Latino Youth that is recruiting students to help Latino students graduate from High School and get a college education, and help students be aware of the opportunities they have out there to be able to get a higher education.  A City College alumni gave a speech about his life. He talked about the obstacles immigrants face here while trying to get educated and learning Englishat the same time. Also he talked about ways of being successful like taking one step at the time and only doing as many things as you could manage(not to overload yourself). I learned that only 30 percent of people who start college finish. Also that more than a 50 percent of Latinos drop out of college after their second year. I was very inspired to finish college and to always try to attain my goals regardless of what others think or say.  Also there was Latino food and after i left they had a Tipico Band( Dominican Music) playing.
