Film Series- Intimate Stranger

Hello again! I don’t know if anyone else has been doing any of these freshman enrichment workshops, but I just finished getting through the Intimate Stranger documentary. Here’s the information (as per the email):

Category: Global/Community Awareness

Date/Time: Fri, 9/25 @ 2:50-4:30

The purpose of this workshop was to… actually, I’m not really sure about the relevance of the movie although it was a biography of a man who was very global. I chose this workshop because, frankly, it seemed easy to complete and I’m pretty open to movies. It was a little bit awkward because literally only 5 people showed up. Mark Spiegal (sp?), the director of orientation, was there. He insisted that we do a discussion on the movie afterwards. I was really searching for some content that I could discuss, but it was really hard for me. I wasn’t able to relate to it at all. The movie was about a Joseph Casutto, who was a sort of unofficial diplomat/ambassador. He loved exploring different cultures and was sort of addicted to it. So much so, that his family suffered because of his continued absence. It seemed to be an admirable life, given that there’s not a suffering family in the background. The only thing I took away from the movie is that I definitely want to study abroad, even if it’s just for a January intercession. That being said, I think the workshop did not meet my expectations because there wasn’t a huge turnout and the movie was pretty dry. I wouldn’t recommend it to another student. It was kinda painful, actually (definitely outside my comfort zone). I learned that I should get the signature first so that if the movie turns out to be a flop, I can walk out. I’m still pretty optimistic about the other workshops I plan to attend.

Freshman Open House @ Academic Advisement

Hey guys! So I attended the mad-house that was the Freshman Reception/Freshman Open House (Robert can attest to this). Heres the info on it (as per the email):

Date/Time: Thurs, 9/17/2009 @ 12:30-2:30

The goals of this workshop were to get the freshman together to socialize and for them to get a chance to speak with advisors. I chose this workshop so that I could fit one in between classes. It took me outside of my comfort zone in that everyone (all like 400) was basically grinding on each other to get their freshman passports signed, but there were so many people, they just let everyone in and said to get the signature later. I did meet new people as we were pretty much squished together. This girl behind me was Nancy and the guy next to her was Daniel. I think that the intentions for this workshop were good, but frankly, I think they didn’t expect the turnout that they got. I met a few new people along the way as I tried to find my way through everyone. The seating that they had out was already full. I had the “refreshments” and stuck around for 10 min talking to random people. Then we all saw this guy signing the passports (he literally was shoved in a corner with 50 books shoved by his face). We all went to get our books signed and then I left because I was pretty hungry and went to get some lunch. I liked the idea of this workshop because it was so casual, but it didn’t take me very far out of my comfort zone. I was focused on getting through the crowd. I wouldn’t recommend it to another student if the turnout was the same. I learned from the workshop that you can meet people in the most random of places. I was surprised that so many people came. I’m not sure there was anything new I could take away from it. Overall, I did what I had to do because it was overcrowded. I probably would have stayed longer if it was emptier because the idea was good, but it was simply overwhelming.

Hello LC 11

College, is a seven letter word that can mean different things for different people. For some people, college is a way to better themselves both intellectually, while others may see it as an opportunity to become more socially involved, and some may see it as an opportunity to do both.  Our question to you all is, what has college been like for you these past 2 weeks? Is it similar to high school? What are the classes like? The campus life?

Also, can you please state one interesting fact about yourself. Something that everyone or most of the people in the class wouldnt know. This is an opportunity for you to learn about your fellow classmates and for them to learn something about you.
