When I first heard about this workshop i instantly thought that it could bring me some benefits to actually listen to a speaker on this very interesting topic. However, I guess i had pictured a speaker who would offer me ‘NEW’ (yes I emphasize on the word NEW) tips on how to manage ourselves in a professional environment. I felt as if i was back in my high school’s “dress for success” events listening to how a tie’s color can be so significant. Honestly, i believe that the workshop could have targetted a different age group. Nevertheless, i am happy to know that even at this point chances are still offered to individuals to learn about impression management (if they haven’t already).
ASEDOM Club Meeting.
ASEDOM is a multi-cultural (mostly Hispanic) club with many fun and interesting objectives. In order to fulfill my Student Life Workshop credit I attended their first club meeting back in early September. In this meeting some of the members, including their president, spoke about the many activities (parties mainly) that the club participates in. In addition, a senior member gave the audience insights on how the club has impacted his College life all throughout his four years at Baruch. In the end, i enjoyed hearing the many experiences of the club’s members and felt relief in knowing that there are clubs in which i can perfectly fit. However, I think i would rather wait a year or two before joining (College work is prioritized for now).
Toy/Coat Drive @ Baruch
Participating in this Toy/Coat Drive was pretty good I guess. Although I simply sat in front of a box which remained empty all throughout the time i spent at the location, i think it was a great way to promote and encourage social awareness. I felt good about offering a bit of my time for the benefit of thousands who for one reason or another find themselves in difficult situations. In brief, eventhough i was not able to collect a single toy or coat, it was simply a great chance to offer something back to our community.
Annual Student Services
This workshop was held in the multipurpose room of the vertical campus and gave an overall view of the different services available to students through Barcuh. This includes things like the Finicial Aid, Writing Center and so on. This workshop i would have to say i’m neutral on because i felt that most of the services there were really things that are obvious to any school. However the different department representatives did have a lot to say about their given area. Therefore i feel as if the simplicity was covered up by the informational gathered. The most helpful piece of informational for me came from financial aid in which he told me that scholarshops were offered through the school which i did not know about. Overall i would say that this workshop was helpful to new students in the school.
Basic Interviewing Techniques
This workshop was hald by a woman from the Starr Career Development office and it ended up being the most informational out of all the workshops i attended. We went over how to prepare for an interview and there were many things that i had heard but very essential material which i had not heard of up until that point. We also reviewed how we should dress and present ourselves to the interviewer or panel of interviewers. We also held mock interviews which were very helpful in identifing traits in ourselves. One thing that ended up being funny was that only four people showed up to the workshop but it was actually a blessing because we had a more detailed presentation because of it.
Club Fair
This workshop i have to say was the most entertaining in which we got to see what this school had to offer socially. The club fair was held in the gymnasium and it was something very unexpected to see so many clubs. Everyone has said that there are over 100 c;ubs in Baruch but this was seeing them all in one place. I talked to atleast 30 different clubs in which it ranged from things like the Tai Kwon Doe club to ASEDOM or a club for accountants. There were also many fraternities and sororities which I really didn’t expect from a cuny school. I also felt like i learned so much more about the people who go to Baruch that day. It showed me that this is not just an in and out school but that things actually happen here. I look forward to see what else i uncover about the school.
Fresh Start
This Workshop was held in the center for academis advisement which is on the fifth floor of the veritical campus. This was meant to help us learn what our semester was to be like in Baruch and how we could deal with it. It was also suppose to tell us what else we would need in order to continue in Baruch. However what ended up occurring was that the room became so crowded that it was just an in and out process. We recieved an envelope with some information in it and then we left. There was no chance to talk with an advisor nor really listen to anything going on. I felt as if i learned nothing from this workshop and perhaps they should have had more than one.
Reflections!
Freshman Seminar assisted me because it made my transition into college easier. Although in the beginning I was not very fond of the many requirements for Freshman Seminar, at the end of it all I feel certain aspects of it were helpful. We were required to attend various workshops, and at some points forced to, because we needed signatures. Some of the workshops were disorganized and truly unnecessary such as the Freshman Open-House. I did not learn anything at all at the Freshman Open-House. I thought someone would speak to us about course requirements and answer questions, but people were just trying to rush us out of the room as it was extremely crowded. It was a joke. However, other ones such as the Internship goal setting workshop were beneficial. The Internship and goal setting workshop was actually the only workshop that I can say taught me something I did not already know. It familiarized me with the process of finding internships as well as how to apply for them. Even though that workshop was helpful, it was ridiculously long and boring. At times, Freshman Seminar just added to my problems as I had to keep up with fitting workshops into my schedule because of the necessary signatures. To this day i was not able to get all the required signatures. Some days I would simply forget my student planner and other times waiting to get a signature would be a hassle. I feel that blogging should be a sufficient for Freshman Seminar requirements because signatures are just stretching it too far. Overall, the workshops were either completely dull and pointless or helpful depending on which ones I attended. The requirements seemed overwhelming, but as peer mentors you guys really did a great job ( Robert and Jenny 🙂 ) Thanks for letting this blog substitute for a Gloabl Community Awareness workshop 😉 . I also appreciated the fact that I could ask you guys for assistance in making my schedule or any other matter. I felt comfortable asking you guys questions even when we were not at Freshman Seminar. You guys did a great job educating us about steps we must take do to get through our freshman year. THANK YOU GUYS!
Reflections– i guess this counts towards community awareness?
Just throwing it out there according to my microsoft word word count this is 310 words =]
In all honesty, I felt like freshman seminar was just a hassle. Going to the events, getting signatures, blogging, and some of the seminars were lack luster and pointless. I think freshman seminar is unnecessarily long. I don’t think it has to be an hour and fifteen minutes. Shortening it to under an hour might just hold my attention span. It would also be preferred if the workshops were not the same time as freshman seminar. Some seminars were helpful and even fun, while others were not. The career advisement and academic advisement were beneficial, helping me to understand how the process at Baruch works. I also enjoyed the seminar about professors. We were able to unload our feelings about them and how to solve conflicts with them. However, the seminar that was not at all informative or beneficial to me was the communications one. I felt like I got nothing out of it. Despite the negative tone of this paper, I did find transitioning easier. Freshman seminar was informative and the seminar leaders were helpful and nice. I could always ambush them in some random place at Baruch and ask them a question or just say hello without them getting annoyed. Blogging was just a burden because I have a tendency to forget to blog but I found it fun at times because it allowed me to express my opinion on the workshops. The best aspect of freshman seminar was meeting and getting acquainted with the people in my class. In class you can’t really talk to anyone because the professor is too busy lecturing but in freshman seminar I was able to get to know other people, whom I am friends with now. These friends also made the transition easier because I knew people in class. Overall freshman seminar has its downfalls but there are some positive aspects.
