Reflections

Reflect on your freshman seminar experience.  What did you like/ dislike about the course?  Is there anything you would change/ something you would not change about the course?  Did you feel this course helped your transition become a smoother one (don’t worry, no hard feelings so you guys can be honest!)  How did this course change your view/ affect your freshman experience?

Minimum: 300 words.  Just to reiterate, this blog can fulfill one workshop blog if you are missing one and/ or it can also fulfill the global/ community service requirement since we were unable to go to a community service event together as an lc.

Artistically Designing Your Own Major

I was not able to attend a few of the earlier art workshops at Baruch because they conflicted with my schedule, and when i looked for other art workshops that may take place in the near future; there were none left. Since I was unable to attend an art workshop to fulfill my requirements for Freshman Seminar, I felt that it was appropriate to substitute the Ad-Hoc major Workshop as an “Arts at Baruch” Workshop. The workshop was very informational and i learnt a lot about the Ad Hoc major if i were to pursue it in the future. I also learnt that it is a difficult process as it requires a thought out application and creativity. The Weissman arts and Sciences Ad Hoc Major is an artistic option for students who feel that the majors at Baruch do not match their future educational goals. With the Ad Hoc major, students have the opportunity to create their own major by combining courses from two or more departments into their individualized field of study. Ad Hoc Majors have a focus in Liberal Arts because there is no Ad Hoc major within the Business School, or the School of Public Affairs. Proposing an Ad-Hoc major is a very artistic task as one must first combine courses to create a major. Then he/she must explain how the courses he/she selected create a unique and integrated major that could not have been achieved by an existing Baruch major. Thus, creating an Ad-Hoc major is best for creative and artistic students who feel that they can create a major that fits them best by combing certain courses.

Clubs

To complete the requisite of student life freshmen seminar enrichment workshop, I attended the club fair held at Baruch College. I was amazed by the amount of clubs that exist in Baruch. It showed that Baruch is not about the rigid classes and curriculum, that students can do something else at Baruch in their free times. I was surprised that they had an Ecuadorian Club. It showed that there is a good amount of Ecuadorian students in Baruch. The clubs showed the diversity that exists at Baruch. I didn’t get to go around many of the clubs because of the amount of students that were in the gymnasium. It was still a good experience and it  gave me a feel of the environment at Baruch.

Community Service

One of the freshmen workshops we had to do was Community Global Awareness. As a way of completing this community service awareness I participated in a Toy and Coat Drive at Baruch College. Even though I only sat and waited for people to bring in coats and toys, it was still a good experience. I had chance to get involve in the community. In addition, it made me feel good about myself. Many people are in need of coats and toys in the world. Participating in this workshop I was in a way helping the cause for people who are in need of coats and toys. In end it was a good experience, and I enjoyed it.

The Art in Donating Blood

So i used donating blood as my arts at baruch. I wrote this poem that chronicles my experience. I think it’s not a good poem at all and yes it is true.

“Drifting”

Silence fills the room.

The beeping of the machines begins to permeate,

taking over the silence.

Fluorescent lighting filling and flickering.

“Next,” says the technician breaking the silence.

The sound drawing me in.

I sit. My arm enveloped.

The cold needle, like an icicle, rushes into my veins.

Frigid.

My hand clenches the grip.

My motions are methodical.

Squeeze. Release. Repeat

My lids become heavy,

I pry them open trying to combat lethargy

but it’s up against a stronger demon: cataplexy.

My body tries to remain catatonic

But its attempts

Useless.

My body shakes.

My lids gain weight.

They begin to close and

I

Drift

Away.

Minutes like hours.

My eyes slowly open to see the fluorescent lighting.

The beeping fills the room.

The ice pack behind my head sends chills down my spine.

Color rushes to my face and I just lie there.

I get up and my body feels weightless but my arm like a brick,

As if it carries the weight of my body.

No longer adrift.

My consciousness hits the shore to be greeted by an endless amount of cookies.

Coat/Toy drive

On the last day of November, a number students including myself, participated in the collection of toys and coats for needy recipients. As 09-10 Winter approaches, cold temperatures are expected to break climate records affecting many homeless and impoverished people. Although thirty minutes of waiting for coats or toys did not bring either, the action of doing what is right and volunteering for the sake of others brings a sense commitment to aid others. This workshop, despite its results, makes me to think that I should really help my community in any way I possibly can.

Doll’s House

Plays were never my thing, I always found them to be extremely boring, and often I would go to sleep in them.  I don’t  exactly remember the last time I went to a play before this one, but it was probably sometime in my middle school years.  The play centralizes over the idea of feminism, as Nora borrows money to make a “Doll’s House.”  The play was good overall, but I feel like the characters were who they were; the characters didn’t seem very genuine.  Moreover, some parts of the play seemed rather exaggerated.  All in all, the play was still pretty good, and brought back a feeling of nostalgia from my middle school years.

Toy/Coat Drive

This event itself was not very productive. The objective was to collect coats and toys, but in the end we had nothing. It was a nice chance to see the diversity in the school with all the people walking by. The event itself was thoughtful but according to a custodian that passed by, the boxes weren’t big enough and the event wasn’t advertised well enough.

A doll’s house

This is definitely another interesting workshop, in a unique way. I think that the last time i had actually been to a play was probably at least 5 years ago. Part of the reason I liked this workshop is because it brought back the feeling in an odd way. Other than that it was an all-around alright performance. I hadn’t expected much from it but it seemed that it brought back some memories. I definitely underestimated the work put into it, the actors definitely put a fair share of time and effort but I have to say it did feel a little corny. But still all in all it was a cool workshop and I give my props to the arts department at Baruch, and I actually would not mind going to another theater performance but I probably would prefer a different theme.

club fair

on September 24th, there was a club fair which i attended. even though i was not interested in joining any clubs i was very surprised such a small school like Baruch had an abnormally large number of clubs and fraternities. most tables had food and games to play trying to lure students to join. there was dancing and it was a very fun scene. what i realized from this is the diversity factor of this school. i have never seen soo many different people from different parts of the world gathered in the same school. it is something very surprising and unaccepted the free food and entertainment was good. i also went to the Actuary Clubs table and asked for information.
