Sonia Sotomayor Discussion/Community- Global Awareness

This event was sponsored by the History Department and was a discussion of the recently appointed Supreme Court judge, Sonia Sotomayor.  The History Department had invited three speakers to talk about Sotomayor’s rise to fame and the issues that she faces in today’s society.  Surprisingly, there was a pretty good turnout for this event and the room quickly filled.

The three speakers were all very informative and knew alot about Sotomayor’s life.  One of the speakers was actually an author of a book about Sotomayor’s achievement and difficulties facing Women in America.  Two of the speakers were women and the other was a man.  The women focused more on issues in society and Sotomayor’s life and the difficulties she faced being a woman.  The male speaker focused more on how she came into power and the history of supreme court judges.  There was a Q&A session after the speakers had their say.  The most important thing I took away form this event was learning about how women, even to this day, still face sexist and prejudiced ideas.  What Sonia Sotomayor is doing is history in the making and these speakers were getting the word out about her and her achievement.
