Arts at Baruch

Me and a few friends went to the Mishkin Gallery for the Arts at Baruch workshop. I was shocked to see such a small gallery. It was rather quick tour and the photographs were very unique. I saw photographs from Tom Baril, Joel Meyerowitz, Eliot Porter and Jill Mathis. Each focused on different things. For example some focused on landscapes and nature while others were abstract light and blends mixed in. I had to attend it again with the english teacher the next day and it was good to see the photographs again.

Career Fair-Career Exploration

I went to the career fair on September 25 so see what companies were at Baruch and ask them a few questions. There certainly was a lot of companies but they were all looking for juniors and seniors. There was only one company that offered interviews to all the students at Baruch but they didn’t offer pay so no one was on their line. The representatives from each company was very cordial and answered all of my questions regarding their company and their respective fields. They told me that if I was interested in their company I should come back every career fair to talk to them and that they will remember you. Showing interest means a lot to me therefore when you are a junior or senior your chances of being accepted is much higher. Workshop was just as I expected where there was a lot of companies but mostly everyone was on the same lines. Since Baruch is a business school everyone was on the GE Capital, Credit Suisse , Wells Fargo , TD bank, FDIC and the IRS. It was a decent experience not that special but I thought it was a good start for me as a freshman to see what the school was able to offer me.

Arts at Baruch

Today we had an opportunity to visit the Mishkin Gallery during our English class. The gallery was very small, but there were some pretty interesting photographs. I especially enjoyed looking at the works of Marilyn Bridges and a particular piece with the Stonehenge. But overall, I guess I basically liked all the photographs dealing with landscapes and nature.

The Nature of Photography–Arts at Baruch

Today, our English teacher, basically took us to the Mishkin Gallery and showed us the photographs hanging there. I looked around I did see an interesting photograph of Stonehenge and some of Andy Warhol’s works. I thought that was pretty cool, because once I saw a drawing made by Warhol on T.V and it was worth thousands of dollars.

Car Phone

A woman was reporting her car as stolen, and mentioned
that there was a car phone in it. The policeman taking
the report called the phone and told the guy that answered
that he had read the ad in the newspaper and wanted to buy
the car. They arranged to meet, and the thief was arrested.

Judge Sonia Sotomayor

The Community/Global Awareness seminar about Judge Sonia Sotomayor was both very enlightening and interesting.  Being both Puerto Rican and from Co-op City in the Bronx, as Sotomayor is, I felt that her life and accomplishments took on an added significance in my life.

The presentation helped me to better understand the challenges she has had to endure in life, the importance of the time period during which she received her education, the significance of her appointment and presence on the Supreme Court, and her possible future court rulings.

One of the most substantial points I took from the presentation was something that may have crossed my mind before, but it never really emanated to me such a strong desire for change (or improvement).  Yes, Sotomayor’s accomplishments should be seen as something special and noteworthy to not only Latinos, in particular, but also to the country as a whole.  However, her appointment (along with President Obama’s election) also sheds light on how such few positions of power are held by minorities, particularly Latinos and Africa-Americans, today.
