The workshop was suppose to start at 1 PM so we started walking there at around 12:45 PM. When we got there, it was so crowded and we had to go in by groups. We ended up being the third group to get in. We waited outside the gallery for about 45 minutes before we got to go in. I was really pissed off at the people that were skipping us.
When we got in, there was a lady talking to us about the paintings done by Mercedes Matters. Mercedes Matters did her first painting at the age of 9. The bold and bright colors of her paintings makes them stand out. A lot of artists don’t do realistic paintings anymore because we have the camera now. Therefore, artists have to make their paintings unique from camera photos by drawing objects at an angle that is impossible for cameras to capture. An example of this is her painting of a table tilting downward with fruits and vegetables on it. It is impossible for a camera to capture that scene because the objects on the table will just slide straight off the table and onto the floor.
The lady told us that whenever we see an artistic peice, we should never ask what it is. We should think about what the artist is trying to tell us. Artists have their own vision of the world and the paintings provide clues of how their vision is like. It is up to us to figure that out.
