Club Fair

I knew there were going be a whole lot of people at this fair but I went there anyway since I really wanted to join some clubs or even though I didn’t join, I wanted to take a good look at it.

As far as I concerned, there were many clubs and none of those were not even interesting for me. The club I was actually interested in joining was  film making club but they came to the fair late and it really disappointed me. And other clubs were more likely cultural clubs such as Jamaican club, Japanese club, Chinese club, and so forth. Almost all those clubs gave out free stuffs to draw attentions but I am not sure if that was a good idea. I mean they could have done some more unique things. However, it was not a bad experience since I got to know more about what kind of activities this school has. I signed up my name for Japanese club by the way.

Freshman Reception

I remember I went to this reception a long time ago and I guess I should have blogged right away. Now I cannot remember all the details in that meeting but I will try to come up with some contents.

Basically, this reception was leading by Ms. Brown who is an advisor and she explained whole bunch of things that freshmen should know and things that we are going to have to go through. Besides, she also mentioned about gpa and how to choose minors based on our personalities. At the end, she explained how responsible an advisor should be to help out many students or advisee

This was a good experience. As a freshman, how possibly can he/she know about this school? However, Ms. Brown at this meeting told us many useful things that we are going to have to use to be good students or to be successful in this college. This reception also reminded me of the importance of getting adequate credits to do certain things such as getting into Ziklin school or making an appointment with the advisement office. This is why I would recommend this workshop to anybody who is new in this school.  It can get you an basic idea of how you are going to get through in this school.

Stress and Anxiety Reduction

Earlier this month, I went to this workshop to fulfill my required 6 workshops (unless the library tour doesn’t count as a workshop in which case I will still need one more after this). Like its name suggests, this workshop was about stress and anxiety which many college student apparently suffer from. Honestly, I thought this workshop was really useless for me. And, considering how many people were freely chatting during the speaker’s presentation, they too probably felt the same.

The speaker made everyone who attended do some activities: one involved examining a raisin which was to help us be more aware of our five senses and another was to follow instructions and be more aware of our bodies and muscles (kind of like a yoga video). Being aware of our bodies was supposed to help us reduce stress. Anyways, I found both these exercises useless.

Coming out of high school, where I had to go to 7 different classes a day 5 days a week, college is really a joke. We have only 2 or 3 classes a day, lengthy breaks in between classes, and no classes Fridays; it’s awesome. In fact, I’m still in senior-itis mode from high school. Also, the classes and work are not really stress inducing. The professors and their policies and their classes for that matter could all be better but it’s not really anything unmanageable. I personally don’t get stressed out about these things and have never gotten stressed about classes. I procrastinate and complain all the time but that’s just part of being a student. If I had to give a presentation on stress reduction, I would not give any exercises with dried fruits or anything like that. I’d keep it simple and say that although school and grades are important, in the grand scheme of things none of this really matters.

Internship and Goal Setting

This was a very typical workshop which I attended on October 22nd that I forgot to blog about. Held in the multipurpose room, it was very crowded, long, and ultimately not very useful. That is because although the workshop was very detailed about undergraduate internships, it did not really give me any new information.

The speaker reiterated the importance of strong GPAs and extracurriculars when it comes to securing internships. She also spoke about the resume and interview skills- about how slight tweaks in each can really help a candidate standout. She also explained the importance of internships in general as internship experience can greatly help us when we are looking for a job.

She also explained how internships can be different; some for example, offer college credit. Many useful websites for searching internships were provided. Ultimately, even though the speaker did well explaining internships, the overview didn’t really tell me things I did not know.

Global Awareness

In mid September, I attended a workshop that addressed the diversity in cultures and ethnicity of the student body in colleges. I was especially interested in this workshop because Baruch is recognized as the most diverse college in the country and I have always believed that the prevalent diversity throughout the US gives it its identity as the crossroads of the world. As an immigrant myself, I have always been aware of how I am perceived, regardless if I was viewed in a positive or negative way simply  on the basis of my race.

I was however surprised that the event was highlighted by a speech from Professor Vaughn of Stony Brook. That is to say, as Baruch is the most diverse school in the nation, I would have felt that a professor from Baruch would have sufficed. Whatever the case, Professor Vaughn was very informative about racism and its relation to how the world has globalized and the extent to which it exists in the international community, not just US boundaries. Having lived in NYC for many years and having attended diverse schools, I agreed with Professor Vaughn’s points of how racism should be replaced with tolerance as every unique race and culture can offer many things to improve the world.

Professor Vaughn’s speech was followed by a panel of professors and students further discussing global awareness. The panel reinforced the idea that although it is important and usually easy to just mingle with people who share similar cultures, it is very crucial that we expand our social circle and learn about people with different heritages. As many students in Baruch are business majors or prospective business majors, this is especially important as businesses have expanded globally and knowing more than one language can be quite advantageous in the field.

Career Planning

This workshop was also located in the multipurpose room and it was on October 22nd. We were shown a powerpoint  presentation and given a booklet that contained information about undergraduate internships that we may be interested in trying. The coordinator explained the information to us on the powerpoint. She was very informative. She told us internships tend to look at high GPAs, extracurricular activities and leadership positions. She also gave us websites to look at that would contain internship information.

Though I am not interested at the moment I hope to participate in an internship during my junior year to further my knowledge in a field of my choosing. I still question what I want to major in and internships would help me greatly to make that decision an easier process. By doing an internship I would be able to participate in that career field and figure out how my life would be if I were to pursue that career path. Hopefully I will be able to do a paid internship in the near future.

Stress & Anxiety Reduction

I have always been able to handle my stress and workload within my previous years, but I still wanted to check out this workshop on November 3rd. The guy in charge asked everyone to complete a few activities, one involving a raisin. The activities seemed interesting but I doubt I would do any of them when I am stressed out. Though I tend to procrastinate a lot and end up with a huge workload when projects are due or when exams are rapidly approaching, I still have always managed to get my work done.

I think going to a school like Brooklyn Tech has prepared me well for college. Granted I will admit, making the transition into college life was a little difficult at first, but now that I am settled in, I feel it is a lot easier than high school. Some of the methods I would use before to get read of my stress was just to music while I worked or talk to a friend or two on aim. And on those late nights when I would stay up to continue working I would just climb in the shower if I got drowsy to wake myself up again. I think I will stick with my methods for the time being. The only problem is I should make more use of my free time. Still I could see the workshop being useful to students who have a harder time dealing with stress.

Global Awareness

I went to a workshop about diversity and internationalization on Sept. 14th. I was interested  with this workshop because Professor Vaughn from Stony Brook University was suppose to speak and I am considering transferring to Stony Brook. Professor Vaughn spoke about the crucial role of globalization within colleges. I feel learning in a multicultural community is very beneficial. It helps you learn more about different cultures. Having a diverse population allows us to learn different languages, customs, and best of all try knew foods. I’d like to think I had a diverse group of friends throughout high school. Hopefully I can do the same in college.

After his speech a panel of Baruch professors and students gave in their input about globalization and diversity. Several issues and problems people encounter at Baruch were discussed. Something that I believe is a problem is that people tend to only hang out with others of their own ethnicity. I feel that when you live in such a diverse city as New York City you can’t just hang out with your own kind. I believe having a diverse population within any campus can help prevent or end racism. Because when you learn with people of different racial backgrounds you see that everyone is different and everyone is also the same.

Student Services Fair

I went to the Student Services Fair on Oct 13th. This workshop had a lot of information about student life and what academic help Baruch can offer. We were given this card where you go around and get 10 stamps. It was really crowded and I didn’t want to stay for this either. But it’s a good thing I stayed because it helped me learn a whole lot of stuff. For example, I learned about SACC and the Writing Center and how they’re basically like free tutors. I knew about it from convocation but they explained more than what I already knew. For example, signing up for an appointment can be done online.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get any stamps. I forgot that we were supposed to get it stamped but since it was only a raffle I kind of didn’t care. But thanks to this workshop I learned a lot of new things. They wouldn’t have done this fair if they didn’t want to. They took their time out for freshmen and others to know about their service. Again, if they don’t take their time out for us, we wouldn’t have these services. Thanks Student Services Fair.

The Nature of Landscape

This workshop was, what you would say, something only people who like art would enjoy. This workshop consisted of photographs that showed the nature of landscape. I am a fan of art and these photographs just let me enjoy just being in the presence of art. These photographs were taken on a plane and took a photo how it would look like if someone was in the sky. Some of these photographs had like different meanings behind it and it was like abstract. It was a photograph that can be something else

When I arrived there I saw a long line and it tempted me to go back, but I still attended so I can write about my great experience. I really enjoyed it and it was good thing I stayed. Going to different art museums like MoMA is fun for me so I really did like this workshop better than others.
