Student Service Fair

I attended the student service fair on October 13th in the multipurpose room. This workshop introduced me to many of the offices and departments here at Baruch College. There were tables set up all around the room with representatives at each table. We had to go up to each one and find out more about that department or program. We were given a raffle ticket of some sort. Every time you saw a representative they would punch a hole in your ticket. If you received ten hole punches you could hand it in for a chance to win some prize or something. Apparently I did not win.

I went up to the transfer office table and asked the representative about transferring out. She told me that they didn’t deal with people who wanted to transfer out, only people who transferred in. She seemed mad that I even wanted to transfer out. She did not punch a hole in my raffle ticket so I had to visit an extra table. I also talked to a representative about honors programs. I don’t think I’ll be able to meet the requirements to get into any honors classes. Overall it was a informative learning experience, but it was a bit crowded and hard to pay attention to a representative so many people talking right behind you.

Global Awarness

I went to the workshop on the global community awareness. A professor from Stony brook came as a speaker. He spoke a great deal about the racism prevailing in the society. He spoke about the racism in the Stony brook college. He said this may prevail in all other colleges in the country. It also affected the students in the academics.
I was particular interested in this topic, since most of my classes this semester were dealing with slavery and racism. After the professor, students spoke about the topic. It was very informative session.

Mercedes Matters

The workshop was suppose to start at 1 PM so we started walking there at around 12:45 PM.  When we got there, it was so crowded and we had to go in by groups.  We ended up being the third group to get in.  We waited outside the gallery for about 45 minutes before we got to go in.  I was really pissed off at the people that were skipping us.

When we got in, there was a lady talking to us about the paintings done by Mercedes Matters.  Mercedes Matters did her first painting at the age of 9.  The bold and bright colors of her paintings makes them stand out.  A lot of artists don’t do realistic paintings anymore because we have the camera now.  Therefore, artists have to make their paintings unique from camera photos by drawing objects at an angle that is impossible for cameras to capture.  An example of this is her painting of a table tilting downward with fruits and vegetables on it.  It is impossible for a camera to capture that scene because the objects on the table will just slide straight off the table and onto the floor.

The lady told us that whenever we see an artistic peice, we should never ask what it is.  We should think about what the artist is trying to tell us.  Artists have their own vision of the world and the paintings provide clues of how their vision is like.  It is up to us to figure that out.

Stress and Anxiety

I was looking forward to this workshop because I have been feeling very stressed out about my exams and other school work.  Only a limited amount of people were able to attend and we were one of the first ones there.   The speaker didn’t seem to have control of the audience.  He spoke in a low voice and he didn’t do much about the people that were talking.  Everyone was annoyed of the students that were laughing and talking in the back.  I barely heard what the speaker was talking about.

He gave us some handouts and made us to some excercises.  He passed out raisins and each student was suppose to take one.  He told us to put the raisin on our palm, examine it, feel its texture, roll it around on our palm, and then finally put it in our mouths.  We couldn’t chew just yet.  We had to let it roll around on our tongue before we could to bite it.  A lot of people refused to put it in their mouths because they thought it was a bit unsanitary.  I did and it actually tasted better after going through all those steps before actually eating it.

He also made us listen to a recording on how to relax your body.  We were stretching our arms, legs, hands, fingers, feet, and face.  I thought the face stretching was funny because nobody did it.  We were suppose to close our eyes and stretch our face by making funny looking faces but no one did.  Overall, I think the workshop was alright.  It would have been better if the students in the back stopped talking and if he could have projected his voice a bit more.

Career Planning

I went to a workshop that helped me plan my career other wise known as the Career Planning Workshop for Internship and Goal Setting. To be honest, I was kind of late so everything already started. The speaker already had a presentation on and was explaining what to do in life after or during our college lives. She then moved on to the explanation of internships and how they can help us get to our goal of being what we want. For example, interning at a hospital can help you A LOT at achieving your goal on being a doctor.

Learning about internships helped me realize that they are very important. I wasn’t really interested in them, but thanks to this workshop I am. I use the speaker’s handouts for help and for reference. The booklet she gave out helped me to improve my essay and use them for jobs and interviews. Group discussions were even better. It helped us interact with each other as we talked about our future.

Club Fair

The club fair helped me get used to what Baruch has to offer. The club fair was helpful for those who want to get involved in student life and social affairs. The club fair was filled with people from many different clubs; The Jewish Club to Ballroom Dancing Club. Even if I wouldn’t join most of these clubs, I really liked learning about all of them because it was so interesting.

Many of these clubs gave out free stuff in order to grab people’s attention. One club gave out candy and one club gave out t-shirts. There was a club where you had to answer questions and you win a t-shirt. My friend won one. It was really crowded, but I still had fun. I signed up for many clubs.

Global Awareness

I went to a workshop and it was about Global-Community Awareness. This workshop was mainly about racism and how it affects people’s lives. There was a professor from Stony Brook University and he made a long and great speech about how racism affects the students in Stony Brook. He spoke about how if these things happen in Stony Brook, it would be the same in other schools.

After the speech, there was a panel of staff and students that came to talk about the situation and elaborate on the speech given by the professor from SBU. They each gave a story that they experienced from their life and it reached the audience. One of the speakers talked about how one of her students had to drop her class just because her ethnicity wasn’t accepted in the classroom. This workshop opened up many opportunities for people who want to change the world.

Academic advisement- Student Fair

I attended the student fair held on October 13 in multipurpose room. It was mainly about the service provided by the college. The representative were present the stall to answer the question made by the student. I was given a card to be punched. I must punch at least 10 to go out from there. So I could see students going to most of the stalls. I went to honors society, health care, etc.

I learned a great deal of information about the honors society and the admission procedure. Most of the stalls had free gifts in order to attract the students. Then I got information about the e-sims exam from the testing centre. I went to the health care. It was too crowded I just listened to the representative and got my card pinned. I got information about the writing centre and the seminars they conduct. Since the entire room was too crowded I just listened to the representatives. I got a great deal of information from the financial aid.

Arts at Baruch – Gallery Tour: The Nature of Landscape

I am really not a big fan of art. This workshop definitely did not interest me at all. There was a line when I got there. I really didn’t want to stay. However, I just wanted to get over the workshops so I sucked it up and got on line. After awhile, I eventually got in. It was just a gallery with pictures. I wasn’t that interested. I just walked around a bit because time I spent on the line was too wasteful if I just left after getting the signature. They were abstract pictures and I know they are suppose to have mysterious and hidden meanings to it. However, I didn’t get what pictures were trying to say.

I am just an average guy. I like to watch sports not look at pictures. It would’ve been really interesting if you are into art.

Internship & Goal Setting

This workshop was in the multipurpose room on the first floor. When we got there, we sat down and watched some powerpoint presentations. I got there little late and I didn’t get to sign my name in. They told me to do so in the end, but I forgot about it and left. They gave us a booklet on how to make resumes and how to get internships. Then they explained with great details and it was very informing.

Person who was presenting was really good. She was a very good speaker. She handled large group of audience very well. I now know how to make effective resume. I know where to go to get my resume fixed up. I am aware of how to seek internship opportunities. This workshop was very helpful and it will be very useful in my career in Baruch.
